Amaya’s is the real deal when it comes to gourmet. Seriously. Don’t let the unassuming façade of their restaurant fool you, when you sit down to dine, the food that is presented is top rate. Their chefs seem to rotate here but always are within the same group. The bites they come up with are traditional by name, such as fideo, fish tacos etc., but the production is something entirely different. Amaya’s likes to put a spin on the common to make a delicious and extraordinarily different meal. And all with fresh ingredients in mind. This place is a real gem when you consider the presentations and the price($ 7 – 10 range)! Treat yourself to this place and help to maintain quality food in areas of town that are otherwise lacking.

Ay Amaya’s, I sooo wanted to like it so much more as I had heard so many incredible things. While the service is superb, I was left a bit perplexed by the food. The Pollo Verde taco, while beautifully presented, left me confused. I my mind, I thought I it would have been flavorful, juicy chicken, either shredded, cubed, pan fried or grilled and covered in a delicious green sauce. Hmmmm, not so much. There was chicken alright, just not sure what was in that green sauce. That taco was only made better by it being doused in their spicy verde salsa. The server suggested Fideo’s Revenge which she said was delicious and their noodles were hand made on site. Disappointed with the taco, this seemed like a safe, infallible option. You have to realize, there are certain things that as soon as this Mexican hears, he’s ready to pull up a chair and eat. Among these are: conchas, barbacoa, carne asada, caldo and fideo. So when the server mentioned it was made by hand, this immediately transported me to my youth and my grandma’s fideo. I thought some little viejita was in the kitchen back there making the tiny fideo, working through her arthritis pain and all. The thought of old school fideo left me FREAKING salivating to say the least. What was brought out did not match anything that resembled fideo. This were pasta ribbons that were served with picadillo. The picadillo, while well seasoned, it reminded me of the Baby Momma’s Momma’s cooking; she would make tacos and liberally use McCormick’s Taco Seasoning. So much that it’s been permanently recorded by my olfactory system. Don’t get me wrong. I applaud them for their effort; making homemade pasta is time consuming. I’m not knocking it-the pasta was cooked perfectly and yes, I would go back to eat that again, no doubt. I was just surprised as I thought they would be making vermicelli pasta instead of regular pasta. Would I go back? Yeah, maybe. I’m curious to try their other interpretations. Definitely worth another try though.

Super friendly staff. Really good pollo verde and carne guisada tacos on homemade corn tortillas. One of the owners graciously threw in a few delicious donuts and cookies. :) Thank you!!!

Let me just say, Bacon wrapped figs on blue cheese toast Hugh and really decadent, refreshing watermelon and tomato salad and a pork chop for two. I highly, highly recommend and the total bill was just a little over 30.00

Yeah the tacos are ok but no seasoning what so ever, tortillas are homemade that’s the saving grace. The salsa is unflavorful and the potatoes mushy and tasteless… yeah you can’t bake breakfast papitas! It’s sure NOT the yummy Amaya’s like in Austin, TX and the name is misleading that it is :/. The one star is for the homemade tortillas.

One of THE best places to get breakfast tacos in San Anto. They are made perfectly and the price is nice. It’s a little cozy but definitely worth the trip.

Amaya’s is a tiny little hole in the wall restaurant that I’ve driven by a thousand times on my way to work and never even thought twice about. But then… I saw some reviews on Unilocal(once again, Unilocal to the rescue!) and made an excuse to get down to East Commerce during lunch time so I could try out these famous veggie friendly tacos. I’m soooo happy I did. Parking was a tricky situation, as I wasn’t exactly sure where I was supposed to go. I found a spot, however, and made my way inside. The inside is welcoming, although small, and the front counter is only a few feet from the front door. The head chef(I think) was at the cash register and took my order, explaining his new menus he had written up on some paper lunch sacks. I knew what I wanted, so I ordered right away without looking at the menu. Hackberry tacofication for this girl. I got it to go, so when I got to my car I immediately looked inside. The presentation was beautiful with lots of color and plenty of veggies. The spring pea salsa(which the chef said his brother had made) was BOMB. I wished for a bit more of the cheese, because it had an interesting flavor, but otherwise the tacos were on point. Although this place is kind of out of the way, definitely make it out here. I’m excited to go back and try some more of the menu, and to see how it continues to grow and evolve. I’m also planning on bringing as many people as possible along with me so they can experience the goodness that is Amaya’s.

Had the fish tacos, order came with 3, which were great. The fish was cooked great with wonderful spices. Other places burn their fish and say it’s blackened, but this one is all spices. The sauce they put on them really tied it together. I also had the plum desert dish that was amazing. It had a pastry with fresh quartered plums in caramel and cream topped with mint. It was perfectly balanced. So good I want to go back again tomorrow.

We finally have great tacos in the east side. From their home made tortillas to their fish tacos, everything is amazing. They even have vegetarian options that are so different from the norm.

What can I say but mmmm mmmm mmm. We ordered the East Commerce w/Carne Guisada amd the chicken tacos and both plates were delish! The homemade tortillas were not mushy they were the perfect blend of crisp and giving. The rice has a hint of butter and was so good, I ate every bit! The refried beans had actually beans in it and it made for a great experience. The Guisada wasn’t fatty and it was do tender, it melted in my mouth. Top the meal off with a Mexican coke and life is damn good!

I waited too long to try this little hidden gem on the East side of San Antone. Amaya’s is family run, there is inside and outside seating. I had the fish tacos, and they were the best fish tacos I’ve ever had in my life. I’m serious about this folks. Blackened tilapia, cabbage, a YUMMY sauce on homemade corn tortillas. 3 come in an order, and it’ll run you $ 9. These tacos are stuffed to the gills; portions are generous. I can’t wait to come back and have some more fish tacos. Lunch ends at 2 and Amaya’s is closed on Sundays. Go get you some fish tacos– you won’t regret it.

It, never fails, good food is in Tha HOOD! Amaya’s i a quaint little neighborhood spot, serving up 5 star eats. These young chefs know what they’re doing, and they do it well. Some of the best Carne Guisada, I’ve ever had. Sorry Mom! Everything taste fresh. This the first time I’ve seen plates made with such skill and attention to detail for under $ 10. It’s a small place with only a handful of tables and once the word gets out I’m afraid I won’t be able to get one. You gotta try this place for yourself.

Great breakfast not far from the livestock show which we’re in town for every year. Reuben took good care of us and obviously takes great pride in their new restaurant. I had Huevos Rancheros which were excellent, with fresh tortillas and bacon cooked just right, lightly crispy, not over nor undercooked. My daughter had breakfast tacos which were also delicious.

I ain’t scared of the Big Bad Wolf! It was more than a mouthful but I managed. Delicious torta and the egg knocked it out of the park. Tasty and exotic sauce with a weird name(mostuza?) gives it a zesty edge. Limited time only so I feel lucky I got one. I will be back trying more of their menu soon, you should too. Family owned and operated with authentic Mexican ingredients and recipes prepared in a classically trained style by CIA trained chef.
