Had the soft tacos. They were decent and very filling. The tortillas are delicious, and have a nice taste to them that wasn’t too floury and not doughy. The salsa and chips were nice to munch on. And Marcal was an excellent server. Great attitude and always making sure I – and his other guests I noticed– had everything I needed. Like refills. Bound to come here again, specially since it’s so close to school!

I went in yesterday with the date that I thought was okay but it turned out bad. service was okay that he was really good the soda was good the enchiladas were great for a small restaurant and the location is right off the freeway. Kind of pricey for the food because chicken and cheese is high in price here in Texas vs Missouri along with tomatoes and bread

I came here on a Friday night with my husband, and everything was above par. I ordered the chimichangas and he had one of the enchilada combos, with queso and tortillas for an appetizer. Our server, Cat, was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was cooked correctly and came out quickly, especially for a Friday night. We had one small complaint(that didn’t affect the deliciousness of dinner) that we voiced to the manager, Greg, and we watched him go to another part of the restaurant to investigate and correct the issue. Overall, everything was wonderful and we enjoyed our experience immensely. We will definitely be back!

If you like TexMex«Gringo» food and not authentic«Mexican» food this is the place for you. Plates are around $ 9.99, the place is clean, waiters are nice, overall good environment. My problem was with the food, it wasn’t gross, just flavorless, with small portions. Sweat tea tasted like water, chicken enchiladas were flavorless with no hint of color of seasoning, just plain white, literally straight tomato sauce from the can to top it. Beans and rice were basic. Chips were hard which was meant to be «fresh». Only good thing I’d say was the salsa was good, it had a lot of heat and flavor, as well the flour tortillas. Overall not my type of place after tasting real authentic mex food. Not a horrible place, guess you have to try it out to see if your taste buds like it.

I gave this a higher rating Han how I personally feel. For me, I don’t really like the food. It’s too American. But my husband loves the fajitas, my kids like it and people from out of town think this is good Mexican food. It does have good tortillas.

The cheese enchilada plate was very disappointing. The sauce is very strange, taste too much like tomato sauce. The rice tasted like it came from a bag or was frozen. The queso was good, but it’s hard to mess up queso. The tortillas are made fresh and were really good. I took some home and the next day they were hard as a rock and disgusting. I would not come here again for Tex-mex.

The quality is not what it used to be. First basket of chips stale. Traded for second basket of stale chips. Taco meat flavorless. Rice dry, crunchy and flavorless. Best thing is the tortillas

We come here regularly and so far have had a good experience every time. We love the tortillas and queso. Service is always fast and food is always great. Casual and laid back, really nice place to bring friends and family.

Sent a family member to pick up an order from Alamo Café and discovered that due to a communication breakdown somewhere, the order was wrong. Alamo Café promptly and graciously corrected the order for me. Top notch service.

Hands down the best queso and flour tortillas that I’ve ever had! Always friendly and attentive servers. We visit often and never leave dissatisfied. Chicken fajita dinner, chicken nachos, and chicken enchiladas are incredible.

We eat at Alamo Café several times each month. Whenever we have company from out of town, we bring them here for a real taste of San Antonio Tex-Mex rather than the restaurants most tourists visit. The service is always very good, and almost every dish is wonderful. We came last weekend to meet a FB friend(+ husband and 4 children) we had never met in person. Everyone ordered different dishes, from the Chicken Fried Steak to the Chicken & Vegetables for 2. Our guests finished every bite on their plates. My wife and I always order the Chicken & Vegetable Fajitas for 2 to share. We get it with the El Charro Beans instead of the Black Beans. There is always food left over, which we take home. Their Fried Jalapeños appetizer is always served piping hot, and we LOVE them. In fact, they are so well prepared that the leftover ones are delicious straight out of the fridge. I would give 5 Stars, but their other boneless chicken breast entrées, like EVERY restaurant we have ever tried, are always a little overcooked and end up dry about halfway through eating. The one time I asked them to undercooked the dish, it was perfect and moist all the way through consumption. We love this restaurant!

The only reason I would come back is that the staff is really nice, and they have some AMAZING tortillas that are all you can eat and free. But other than that, I’d probably steer away from Alamo because the food is pretty subpar compared to other Tex-mex places in SA. Or, I would go and order some queso and just eat the free tortillas with queso. They leave out bowls of salsa on the table, which is fast and efficient, but it makes you wonder how long the salsa has been sitting outside. There’s plenty of seating though, which is nice, so you aren’t crammed or waiting in line for forever. As for food, I ordered the burrito dinner. There isn’t much to say other than it seems like most of the food comes out of a can(I’m sorry if that offends). They threw a bunch of chili on the burrito, and it was severely over-salted. Honestly, I would give the food(besides the tortillas) 1 – 2 stars.

The food at Alamo Café is consistent. I’ve been coming here for years because it’s easy and good. Is it delicious, that depends. I recently tried the Chicken Chipotle and it was surprisingly good. Might be a new favorite for me. I always take a few extra tortillas home for the kids. Bri was our server and was fantastic!

Great atmosphere, good customer service. The food wasn’t that great. I ordered the brisket tacos. It was just brisket with bbq sauce slapped into a Tortilla. No cheese, not grilled and not good. Plus it was served with French fries. The only upside are the made in house tortillas. But that’s not enough for a return trip. Much better Tex mex at Mama Margie’s next door.

The food was pretty good tex-mex. I went here with my boyfriend and his parents. I got the fajitas. They bring out salsa, chips and entire plate fresh tortillas. The flour tortillas are delicious. The fajita was okay, I’ve definitely had better. I think for the price it’s nice. It’s also a quiet and casual restaurant. Good place for a chill dinner.

The bad reviews don’t seem to be keeping the customers away! I recently had my first visit to Alamo Café on a Wednesday afternoon and the place was packed with a 10 min wait for a table. Their queso is delicious, the brisket quesadilla was amazing, and the waitress was very friendly. No complaints here!

Ok I’ve been eating here since 1988. This place used to be one of the best tex-mex restaurants in town. Not any more. My last three visits have all been the same. Just bad food. Today the tortilla soup(large bowl) had about three small, wait, very small bites of chicken and just brown broth. Nothing else. The flour tortillas were all cold — like the just came out of the fridge. Sorry Alamo — you’re done. Your best days are long behind you.

This place is definitely not vegetarian/vegan friendly. I would not be complaining but we did look at the menu to see if I had options(vegetable fajitas, vegetable enchiladas without cheese — check) and we also called ahead to see if the sides used any animal products(meat, dairy, egg, etc). The employee on the phone told us that the rice did not use any animal products and only the borracho beans involved meat. So off we went. The vegetable fajitas were good and had a nice char on them(the flour tortillas are not vegan friendly so I went with corn), and the chips and salsa were nice, but unfortunately the beans were not vegetarian at all and I’m not sure if the rice was safe either. The black beans had pieces of meat in them and had a strange flavor to them(I tasted them before I realized they had meat). I’m not sure about the rice, but I do know a lot of yellow Spanish rices use chicken broth, so I fear they may also be off-limits. The food I did have was good, and the service was good, but I am still disappointed in the sides and the fact that the employee on the phone gave us the wrong information. That is offensive to me that she did not take my question seriously enough to find out the truth. What if someone had a deadly food allergy — would they bother more then? I don’t hold it against a company for having animal products in their food, but it would be nice for both the employees to be fully aware so they can answer questions accurately — and for the menu to reflect that. I think it’s a little deceptive to list a vegetable main(literally just a bunch of grilled vegetables alongside pico and guacamole) with black beans that have meat in them, and without any sort of note that this is the case. I enjoyed this restaurant before I was a vegan and I don’t recall ever getting bad service before, so if you are just looking for some Tex-Mex, then this is a good option. But if you are seeking a vegetarian or vegan option when out with omnivore family or friends, you might want to look elsewhere or else you need to be extremely diligent about finding out what is safe. A bunch of fajita veggies with pico, guacamole, chips, salsa, and corn tortillas should be safe, though.

We were greeted and seated immediately which added to the appeal since. Our first option was over an hour wait. Kaylen was our server and she was fantastic! I love surprising the manager with a positive story about a server. She was friendly, prompt at attentive. She had things for us before we needed them and was super helpful. The food is not top of the line Tex-Mex but then it was never intended to be. The shrimp fajitas were ok but could have been a tad more flavorful. It was good and hot and came relatively quickly. The kids are well so that tells me that they liked it as well. The tortillas are always great. They’re fresh and made a few feet from your table. The kids loved them too. I had a glass of the house Cab and it was reasonably priced and not bad at all. All in all this place is a great family restaurant for medium quality Tex-Mex.
