Dexter’s Dogs is, in my opinion, one of the hidden gems of downtown Salt Lake. It’s right on South Temple at the edge of City Creek. It’s in the same space as Farr’s so most people go in for frozen yogurt(not my thing) and ice cream(the pralines and cream is awesome) and don’t even notice the hot dogs. But take notice next time. The menu is small, only about 6 items, but I’ve always been impressed with the freshness of the ingredients and the service. My favorite is the Southwest dog with a polish sausage. I prefer the polish over the regular frank because it has a few more spices and flavors than the regular hot dog. You will not be disappointed.

My whole family is very picky about eating just-average food. If it isn’t great, they just won’t eat it. I blame my wife’s excellent cooking for this; she has spoiled the lot of us. That being said, we all ate our dogs and enjoyed. A Southwest, an American, and a Chili dog were more than enough for two adults and two kids. We even stayed for yogurt, which is on par or better than other chain yogurt stops. All fresh-cut fruits small enough for a toddler to eat; a nice selection of sorbet, yogurt, and ice cream varieties; hot cider and cocoa. We will be back!

With the City Creek food court being too crowded, we decided to grab a hot dog at Dexters. We both ordered the American hot dog. Daughter just wanted ketchup, but decided to go with their special sauce. I had my hot dog with everything. PROS: Beef dog was of good size and tasty Pickle on the hot dog was sweet and in a good way Bun– seriously, the best hot dog bun I’ve ever had. Have no idea where they get these from. Location across from Temple Square plaza was gorgeous with all the flowers in full bloom. Price is good– $ 5.00 gets you a good size hot dog, small bag of chips and a soda. CONS: there was so much sauce on my daughters. Hot dog– it was unreal. Took several napkins just to soak it up to the point where she could eat it. Made for a very messy meal and she gave up after three bites. They put crushed potato chips on top of my dog. I did not see that listed as one of the ingredients. So unnecessary and unappealing. Will I go back? Maybe, but I’ll take my time. The cookies they serve looked tempting, so may go back for one of those.

This place is great. Good dogs, cookies and froyo. Not to mention the pineapple dole whip I’ve only ever seen in Hawaii.

Dexter’s Dogs is located inside the Farr’s Fresh ice cream, and they have great dogs at an awesome price. I had the southwest dog, and got some ice cream afterward. I will definitely go again. I know the address says 50 S. Main, but this place is really on the corner of South Temple and State Street.
