Hickory hut made the most amazing barbecue! I’m on a cross-country move and we stopped in Salina overnight. I looked up places to eat and this place popped up. I was so exhausted from the drive that day I was thankful to realize that they had a drive-through. I pulled off the highway ran through the drive-through and it was accommodated quickly. I got the two plate meal. I got two of them so I could try more food. I got the brisket, pulled pork, chicken and the ribs. For the sides I got onion rings, Santa Fe party potato, sweet potato fries, and coleslaw. The standouts were the ribs, pulled pork, potato, and onion rings. Another highlight was the BBQ sauce. Just the right amount of sweet and savory. If you happen to be in Salina, you have to eat here! You won’t regret it!

Good brisket and very good sauce. Disappointing they were out of the burnt ends. Sorry this review is short but I will have to give them another try. This place is kind of a dive, which for a BBQ joint, is a plus.

Passing thru on i70 and was worth the detour. After having the two meat plate i picked up a half slab and whole chicken to take back to Denver. Unfortunately had much too late to get burnt ends. Brisket was good, ribs were pretty good too. Cole slaw was almost as good as my mom’s. Onion rings were a bit greasy and over cooked.

The ribs and the baked beans are worth the trip alone. Yum yum! I suggest you go get some if BBQ is what you’re hankerin for!

Dry meat. did not see a smoker on premises. They compensated for the dryness with loads of bbq sauce

Solid divey BBQ joint. Had the low carb meal… and a 2 meat dinner(hey, gotta try the whole menu if you’re an out of towner right?). Pulled pork didn’t score highly as it just wasn’t very flavorful(even with the sauce they put on it). The burnt ends were good, quality sauce caramelization and tender. The rib… well it was quite chewy, but the choice bits of it I was able to pull off were wonderfully smokey and flavorful. The sausage is quality, especially the spicy stuff. The brisket was advertised as sliced… but it was as though it was pulled like the pork; no matter because it was pretty good. Rib: B-, Pulled Pork: C+, Brisket: B+, Sausage Non/Spicy: B+/A-, Burnt Ends: A, Fries: B+, Toast: A. It’s a solid 4 star place, would definitely stop in again.

It’s been a long time since I was here. Probably 11 years. Still as good now as it was then. Go for the hot Slammer. It’s outstanding. Their beans are good but would like to see more meat in them. Fries are very good as well. The sauce has a bite which to me is good because I don’t care for sweet sauces. Only downside is there isn’t much for parking and the dining room is kinda small. Great BBQ!!!

When you have people from the south say that this is the best BBQ they’ve ever had, you know its good. Best BBQ next to KC

Level your expectations a bit. Not an all-timer hear, but you won’t feel like you’ve been conned either. Is that a compliment? You decide

STOP, SLAMMERTIME! If your going by Salina on I-70 or I-135/81 you MUST stop and eat here if you haven’t before. I live closer to KC and its epic BBQ joints, but Hickory Hut can hold its own with the best. I personally love their ribs, but many love the Slammer which is a 10−12″ mild or spicy polish sausage topped with pulled beef and sausage with sauce on a bun. you won’t be disappointed and help yourself to the pickle spears and peppers!

This really not a fair judgment as we had a late lunch 3p so probably did not get best test. We both had a hot link, I also had 3 pork ribs. They were both real good, and dryer as I prefer always. Friend had a sandwich and said was good. We plan to stop again. Fresh jalapeños available at condiment counter so I was impressed positive. Thanks folks. Will try you again.

Can’t go wrong with anything at Hickory Hut! Burnt Ends are hard to come by sometimes, so don’t go their with only those in mind. Stick with their normal fries, but definitely get the sauce they give out with their sweet potato fries and you will not be disappointed! Their slaw is average at best so stick with beans or potato salad.

Found this little gem while searching Unilocal and it was delicious. Walking into the restaurant you know they focus on one thing and one thing only and that is their BBQ. I had the 2 meat plate with the Pulled Pork and Burnt Ends. The Pulled Pork was delicious and worth 5 starts. The reason I rated Hickory Hut 4 stars was for two reason 1) the Sweet Potato Fries are OK and I wish there was something green to pair with the massive amounts of meat they provide. If you are looking for a good BBQ joint, stop into this spot!

Only four stars because I’m a southern bbq snob and kansas is a bit too far from the mason dixon for me. That being said, the beans are the best I have ever had! while they could have had more of a kick, they were so sweet i had images of honey combs dancing in my head while i ate them. So worth the stop!

Some darn good Que. Brisket — perfect smoked flavor, tender to the pull and very flavorful with little fat noticeable. Pork — pulled pork was darn good also. Great flavor all by itself. Sausage — we got the Spicy and it had a pretty good kick to it. It was a little different than I am used to in that it is small sauge links, not the large links you might be used to. Ribs — very tasty as well. Came with a little caramelized sauce on them that added just a little crunch. Very tender fall off the bone. Sauce — had their normal sauce and just note it is a little sweet. Not in a bad way, but it is a sweet variety of sauce. Cole slaw is very good. Baked Beans are good, not great, but very good. They too are sweet. Potatoe Wedges are very surprisingly good. They use a seasoned salt. Prices are actually very reasonable for Que… All in all, great place to stop. NOTE — it is very small inside. When they are busy, hard to find a seat… ANOTHERGREAT — had a drive thru, don’t know if it is really operational, but DAMN, Drive Thru Que —- wish they had this in California
