Nice little neighborhood bar. Food is average but at a good price. Closed on Mondays more of an older crowd

A low-key locals establishment, Leslie’s Retreat has excellent baked scallops, great garlic bread(I could eat a whole loaf of it) and reasonable prices. I highly recommend this place!

My wife and I drive by this place all the time, but our first visit was tonight. I had to twist her arm a little — I don’t think she’s as big of a history buff as I am. But once we got inside, we were on the same page in our admiration for this charming, quirky place. The food, including a selection of what I’d call Yankee tavern favorites, was uniformly excellent. The service was great, too. And it was ridiculously affordable, to boot. A recommendation: stay for dessert. The waitress’ favorite dish is the blueberry pie a la mode topped with cookie dough ice cream. It ruled, and set us back no more than three-and-one-half dollars. We’ll be back for sure.

Place stinks. Came here once for a burger. It was ok, service was terrible. Figured I’d try for breakfast, and it was a pigstye. Bar regular was cleaning dirty dishes off of the bar. Sat for 15 minutes without seeing anyone that worked there, and it wasn’t that busy so I don’t know what the problem was.

Great find! First, the parking is around the back so don’t panic there is lots of space. Second, every night there are home made specials. Reasonably priced and welcoming. its a local spot, nothing fancy but the food is good and the servers are friendly and attentive. We enjoyed a few meals here and recommend Ruben, burgers, the two for specials which include cheese and crackers, wine and two entrees, and the grape-nut pudding.

5 stars for exactly what it is — a wonderfully cheap dive that doesn’t give you that«Oh, I need a shower now» feeling after you leave. I had not been to Leslie’s Retreat in almost 20 years, give or take a few years. I recall many a good breakfast had there with the ‘rents in my salad days. Upon moving back to Salem recently, and within 7-iron shot of The Retreat, I knew I would cross paths with this establishment eventually. However, from the outside, I wasn’t sure I wanted to go in there. And trust me, I’m no stranger of a good dive bar — I’d list my favorites but I’m afraid my review would get blocked. But this past Sunday morning, in need of a good caloric-filled breakfast, my friends and I gave Leslie’s Retreat a shot. 8 of us bellied up to the bar at 10-ish AM and were attended to quite quickly. Our waitress/bartender gave us our menus and then dished out a slew of Bloody Mary’s to some of our hungover compatriots. I perused the lengthy menu and noticed that the most expensive item was the $ 8.99 Garbage Omelet, which I obviously went for. Everyone was pretty overwhelmed with the choices, as well as the amusing Revolutionary War themed dishes. Once the food came out there was silence(a rarity for us) as we housed our meals. Save for the occasional ‘Holy sh*t! This is amazing!”, you didn’t get a peep out of us. My omelet was packed, with a large side of home fries(cooked crispy and diced, which I liked), and for the heck of it the ladyfriend and I split some small pancakes… which were fan-f*cking-tastic. They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover and I would not judge Leslie’s Retreat by their entrance ever again. Looking at the lunch and dinner menus, I am sure to be back… and often. This is not a huge place and since the parking is in the back it is anyone’s guess how busy they get. All I know is if you’re looking for dirt cheap food that leaves you feeling full, then get to Leslie’s Retreat. — Juggernaut Conquered Bunker Hill

Ha! We were driving by and practically swerved to stop. After all, we had to find out«who Leslie was» and«why he retreated». I had no idea I would be walking into a practical revolutionary war” theme park. Seriously, everything on the menu is some sort of revolutionary theme. Even the appetizers are called«ammunition». Add to the fact that drinks are ridiculously cheap and you’ve got yourself a winner! Side note: I did not actually order any of the food, so no comments on the quality or quantity thereof…

I went there today for an early dinner with my boyfriend. I suggested to him based on pure recommendation and also the fact that I am a life long Salem resident and have never been there before. No one else was there eating when we got there, just a few people at the bar watching the Sox game, but this was before dinner time. The waitress we had was very nice and we could tell was also pretty much new. She was very courteous and offered us napkins to dry off because we did in fact walk there in the rain. He ordered the Leslie’s retreat which in boneless friend chicken with a choice of two sides and I ordered the Colonel’s choice which is Steak tips with a choice of two sides.(Side note: All sandwiches on the lunch menu are also offered for dinner) He loved the boneless chicken to a point where he said he may not order anything else. He believes from the taste that this is nothing that is pre-made but they fry the chicken with they’re own breading and everything. I had a piece and it tasted delicious. The steak tips were great as well. One of my hang ups is when I order steak well done and they serve it to me burnt which is something this place did not do. I very much appreciate that. Obviously their cooks know what they’re are doing. I would absolutely go here again and recommend it friends. I’m definitely looking forward to going here for breakfast because I here that that is when Leslie’s is at it’s busiest. P. S. The times for listed for open business for this place are wrong. They are closed all day Mondays and are not always open to 1pm as listed.
