Accomidating rooms, company and food. We stayed here for our anniversary and were warmly greeted by Mike, his wife and some very tasty cookies. Later we chatted with Mike over some wine and cheese. The visit exceeded my expectations! I wish I had seen the garden in bloom — it’s quite peaceful.

My husband and I stayed here for our one-month anniversary. We like celebrating! Mike and Cathy Hankins were gracious hosts. Mike greeted us with chocolate chip cookies and showed us to our Captain’s Quarters room overlooking a beautiful Japanese Maple tree. Mike’s run the B&B for 25 years, knows all the local restaurants, all the local wineries, and all about the history of the area. If you go to the complimentary wine hour(6−7pm), Mike will tell you all about the history of the B&B, the town, and anything else you’d like to know. His wife, Cathy, made a delicious breakfast with butterscotch Amish friendship bread for which she gave us a starter and directions. She also made a second pot of coffee so I could try some. The coffee is as good as Mike tells you it is! Breakfast is served at large tables so you get to meet other guests. Cathy and Mike sent us on our way with a little bundle of chocolates. We chose the Captain’s Quarters because it was the only room with a stand-up shower. After backpacking, I knew we’d want to shower rather than bathe in the painted claw foot tubs that are in all the other rooms. The room had unique decorations all over the walls. Mike and Cathy have a quilt displayed perpetually in their sewing room for guests to sign. They also have a game room with a pool table, a sitting room for the wine hour, and a dining room for breakfast. Guests have free use of all those rooms in addition to their bedroom. Compared with other area B&Bs, the Southern Hotel is at the upper end of the price range. Keep in mind that Mike is a punctual person; we joined the wine hour at 6:15 and caught him mid-history. As non-smokers, the prevalent«do not smoke lest you incur a $ 200 charge» signs seemed unnecessary but I’m sure the Hankins have good reason for having those signs in nearly every room. All in all, it was a lovely stay with warm and generous innkeepers.
