Another always crowded yet worth the wait place located on SSI. I’m particularly fond of their burnt ends, hand cut fries, and slaw. Their mustard sauce is especially delicious. Great character place in addition to the delicious food offered here.

Delicious barbecue! My only critique is that they had no veggie options for sides(not even green beans).

Should change name to Southern Cumin, as that is the only distinctive thing about this meh joint. Hype and funk way outpace the food here. The brisket was overcooked pot roast dry, without any real deep smoke flavor if you have had competition quality cue. The pulled pork was a little better, but not by much, still too dry and lacking the layers of flavor. The chicken was functional, but skin not rendered as tight and snappy as you’d like. Best single meat was probably the andouille sausage a lean but still flavorful link with plenty of spice but not blow your head off hot. Yum. Sauces? OK. Nothing that drove me wild. Sides were totally unremarkable to a sin against God. Beans and slaw cafeteria quality and Brunswick stew not among best 10 examples I’ve had. But the hoppin’ John. WTH? Gonna be generous and assume whomever made it for our visit simply didn’t know what they were doing. Because there no way a cue joint seriously thinks the dish is bland white rice and unseasoned black eyed peas. It took two tablespoons of hot sauce to give it any flavor but it still lacked the stewed tomatoes that some preps add or the onion, bacon, ham, peppers, etc. that are common. Nursing home pablum here. Single best thing? The good local crafts on tap. But good luck ordering more than one round with the counter service system.

Excellent bbq! I highly recommend the pulled pork and ribs! You must get the fried Oreo for desert. We came with 6 a plus a baby and had a great time. The staff is friendly and helpful. We’ll definitely be back!

Ribs, pulled pork, brisket, they are the best I’ve ever had! I have been coming here for years and it’s a must when you come to Saint Simons. It’s a busy place so plan on getting it to go or plan on waiting for a table to open up because the inside is small. Order a beer or a tea and enjoy it while you are waiting, you’ll be glad you did. Brunswick stew and Mac n Cheese are also to die for, enjoy!

I think I need to not order the ribs again, I was pretty disappointed. I’m sure it may have been because we were later in the day, I don’t know, they were just too… tough. I did see some tasty wings on the same table as I, but I won’t be there again until next year. Oh well. The spicy sauce, french fries, and fried green beans are good is good, but I don’t care for the other sauces.

Let me tell you I’ve been to town once or twice… I’ve had enough barbecue to know the real thing from somebody just saying it’s good. I’ve judged contests, I can smoke like a champ(my ribs are better than yours) — and I grade them all A to F. This was an easy A! My wife and I were at Sea Island for a meeting, and left Memorial Day morning to get back home to Columbus, only because we had had enough of Sea Island. Because we weren’t going to be able to make our own, we decided to pick up at this highly reputed establishment. Calling ahead was key. The line was pretty impressive for Memorial Day at noon. We ordered the ribs, Cajun sausage, turkey, slaw and beans. Landed in Columbus, the land of not so great Q, and reheated one of the best meals we’ve had in awhile. While it’s not in the neighborhood for us, we’ll likely venture back over for a treat sometime. This was ridiculously good. My faith in humanity is restored.

Holy mother of pork fat, is this place good. We parked around back, and I loved the fact that we could walk right by the grills and see and smell everything cooking. I had the chopped pork plate(I was blessed with one bit of burnt end) and the hubs had the ribs. Wow, porky goodness all around. I also, to be healthy, had the collards, which were great, and the hoppin’ john, which was good, not great, but I’ll over look that. Nice beer selection too(if you haven’t had Terrapin Recreation, you must try with BBQ). We’ll be back! BTW, everybody who works here is hustling like crazy. The line looks long when you get there, but they move folks along pretty well.

Went tonight and had the soul sandwich with coleslaw on top. It was delicious. Also had fries and fried okra as the side which was good as well. Not lots of tables inside and there is picnic table seating outside. Lots of sauces to add to your food as well and they were all good. Good southern barbecue!!!

We’ll be talking about this place everytime we remember traveling through Georgia. The ribs were outstanding and the chicken was smoked perfectly. The service was great, kept our glasses full. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting great BBQ

I am no BBQ expert, but this place is phenomenal! Awesome BBQ chicken, ribs, brisket, pulled pork, fried okra, hush puppies, macaroni & cheese… Just about everything is delicious! The service and staff were also amazing! Such a warm, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I hope to come back some day!!!

We are BBQ«snobs» and we are always looking for new good BBQ to try. So, we made the trip to St. Simon’s from Jacksonville on the recommendation of a friend as well as based on the ratings on Unilocal. We were NOT disappointed. I had the brisket sandwich after receiving assurance that the fat was well trimmed. The sandwich was huge, so I retrieved a flimsy plastic knife to cut the sandwich in half – I need not fear that it was sufficient because the brisket was so tender it slid right through! It comes w/slaw on the ‘wich but I asked for it on the side to check for taste and messiness. Again, no worries! Slaw was spicy and not too mayo-y so I immediately added it to the sandwich. I used their spicy BBQ sauce. Delicious! My husband got the Southern Soul Sampler w/ribs and brisket. It also comes w/Brunswick stew(duh) and one side and he got Mac n cheese. Neither of us are fans of stew in general so I won’t mar this review w/our opinions there. Mac n cheese was creamy and flavorful. Brisket, as said before, was tender and lean. Perfect smoke ring. Ribs were meaty and abundant with just the right amount of chew. Hubby says he’s usually not a fan of oak smoked BBQ but Souther Soul changed his mind! Totally worth the road trip! We WILL be back!

I’m still dreaming about this place! We all went ham on the food here(pun intended, ha. ha.) I ordered the burnt ends sandwich– I thought it was a decent portion for the nominal price! I really enjoyed dipping into the sauces too. My favorite was the hot soul BBQ and the sweet BBQ sauce. I also ordered a side of hush puppies and the slaw. Those hush puppies were the best I’ve ever had and had quite a zesty bite to them. The rest of the gang ordered the pork rib sandwich(fall off the bone sorts of amazing), the brisket sandwich(yum!) and the sampler platter filled with pork and beef and a bunch of other delicious things. The atmosphere reminds me of eating at a small gas station– there are only a handful of tables inside, but plenty of picnic tables outside in the parking lot. It’s a true BBQ experience not to miss! #digonpig

No wonder this BBQ place is so popular! There is just a passion for this BBQ place! The place is down home casual, cool, and comfy even when you are sitting at a picnic table! It is like everyone is family! Our BBQ was great. It stood out! We loved the brisket and ribs the most. The pulled pork was salty for me! I tried all the BBQ sauces and they were the best! Fried Okra and Mac and cheese were perfect! This is the place to go when you are in St. Simon Island! Don’t let the line scare you! It is worth it!

We drove an hour out of the way to visit Southern Soul. Between us we ordered the brisket chili, pulled pork, ribs, burnt ends, coleslaw, fried okra and hoppin johns. We frequent BBQ joints and I thought this was going to be the best BBQ I had ever had; it wasn’t. Bad news first. The burnt ends were as described. You can see in the picture, It was beef that was cubed. Its was kind of tasteless and not my favorite. The ribs and the pulled pork were great. THe fried okra was hot and their sauces were good. This wasn’t even the best BBQ that I have eaten in GA… Maybe we caught them on a bad day but this is easily one of the biggest letdowns; especially on how everyone else raved about it. Stick to the ribs and you’ll be happy!

Southern Soul Barbeque on St Simon’s Island was absolutely worth the drive from Orange Park. The food was awesome. The best pulled pork I’ve ever eaten. It was so tender that it melted in my mouth. The sides were awesome as well. I will definitely be going back. This restaurant has been featured in Southern Living magazine, the Food Channel and other magazines and TV shows. Not big inside but they do have seating outside in a covered area.

Probably the best pulled pork o have ever had! Who knew that pulled pork cab taste that good! Regarding the ribs, I would only get it if you wanna try a new flavor, and not for texture or tenderness…

I flew into the local airport here during my flight training and the person at the airport recommended this joint which was just down the street. You probably don’t even need a car if you don’t mind walking about 8 – 10 minutes. Well, it was damn delicious. I went with the pulled pork with a side of mac n’ cheese and the brunswick stew. I thought that this meal was perfect for the cold day it was. I liked the wooden interior and the southern hospitality. If you’re ever randomly in St. Simons island, this is your place to grab some tasty BBQ!
