First time guest. I ordered the chicken curry salad. It is served on a bed of lettuce. I would have preferred it on a croissant. However it was delicious. My husband enjoyed the taco soup with a turkey melt. He Would order it again. Now I chose this restaurant because of the bragging of «best ever coconut cream pie. I was satisfied but not able to agree with it being the«best». Homemade crust was a bit over baked. The filling was tasty and light.

Interesting place this is. Very old décor, and not elegant antiques, just old décor. Very friendly staff. The owner is the sweetest little lady you’ll ever meet. She gives you a very warm welcome and is truly grateful for those dining in her establishment. She brings fresh baked blueberry muffins by as you are seated. They are very good. The salad buffet is included in your meal and is composed of several different homemade pastas and salads as well as a lettuce salad with homemade dressing. The food quality is pretty decent. I will agree with other Unilocalers, the prices are a bit high. I feel the meals were about $ 8-$ 10 overpriced.

The people are great, friendly, respectful, and attentive. They were understaffed, so the service was exceptionally slow. The food was alright, nothing exceptional.

slow service, the owner was nice but not really responsive when she ask how things were and we told her the following: They were out of 2 dinner options we wanted, so we ordered burgers, they were out of buns and put the burger on bread or a hoagie,(still full price.) There was a large dead bug on the curtain behind us, we asked the waiter to remove it which he did. overall the service was slow and the prices way too high, and a large dead bug hanging on the wall.

I wanted to like this place. We went there on a recommendation, and the people really are welcoming. The décor feels stuffy and dated, not in a vintage way, either. But it was the food that was the real disappointment. The menu selection was dated as well, but even supposing you were up for old school food, the cooking was subpar. I had the NY strip steak. The steak itself was not a great cut, and the cooking was just okay: correct temperature, but way under-seasoned. The fries were the same. My wife had the sandwich combo, she didn’t finish either the beef sandwich or the potato soup. They just weren’t good. In fact nothing tasted fresh. I would bet everything we ate came out of a Sysco box.

Without a doubt one of the most unique restaurants I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. We arrived and were greeted by the Mother in Law herself and promptly seated by a young and very apologetic waiter. Moments after sitting, the MiL brought us fresh blueberry muffins, which were unbelievably delicious — salty, crisp, fluffy, and sweet. I ordered the special — Cajun salmon with a mango salsa — which came with the salad bar. The salad bar was more of a «salads» bar — the carrot salad was the stand out for me. My salmon was perfectly seasoned(albeit slightly undercooked, a lesser sin than had it been overcooked) and the mango salsa was sweet and refreshing. It came with steamed vegetables, which were just okay, and should have come with another side, but since I don’t eat meat and the only side left contained beef broth, I had to pass. Overall, a great dining experience, marred slightly by lack of sides and the undercooked fish. Definitely worth going to experience the décor, the old fashioned menu, and of course, the MiL herself.

By all means DO listen to the naysayers. This place really deserves 1 star for the uninspired and subpar food, but they’re just so friendly that it made the disappointing experience(somewhat) better. Also, from what I’ve seen, this place is average for St. Charles, which as a whole is a hopeless place to go out for food. That being said, I would not go back. I had the turkey melt and side salad, which was pretty much some flavorless deli turkey slices — and not fresh turkey, but seriously the turkey slices for sandwiches you buy in plastic boxes at the grocery store when you’re too lazy to buy real turkey breast and cut it — with a slice of cheese on what must have been deep fried Sara Lee sliced bread since it was so oily. The side salad was the iceberg lettuce out of a bag you pick up at any grocery store. Where’s the fresh artisinal sourdough bread? Or the real turkey breast sliced in the kitchen? And would a mixed greens salad be that difficult? Iceberg lettuce — really? It’s a fake salad that needs an unhealthy dressing to give it any flavor at all. As to the atmosphere, again it’s a very friendly place and the crowd is very home-y. It is however extremely stuffy(e.g. fake flower wreaths on the tables).

Where should I start on how bad my experience was. First if you aren’t on Medicare and do not have all day for lunch then don’t come here. We went for lunch today and everyone in the restaurant, including the waitress qualified for Medicare. After being sitted and told the waitress would be right with us, we waited 10 minutes to have our orders taken. We both ordered chicken salad sandwich add provel cheese, which comes with a salad, and ice tea. Waitress was confused by putting the cheese on the sandwhich. After taking our order we didn’t see her for another 10 minutes as we waited for our ice tea. She stopped by to ask how we were and I told her we still didn’t have our ice tea. Another 5 minutes later we finally get those. Then it is another 10 minutes before we got our food. The chicken salad was nothing but chicken and mayo with tiny bits of celery. Our salad was completely plain no dressing in sight. Our waitress never even came back so we could point this out to her. Owner stopped by after we were done eating the salad and asked my friend why she didn’t eat her salad, I said because there was no dressing. She said we should have complained to get our way. That would have required us to see our waitress. The owner never bothered to even ask me how my food was. Will never go back to this place.

Had lunch today Food was well, just OK not really what I expected but OK Had The lunch combo $ 6.99 on menu(½ sandwich plus side salad) 1– We were told sandwich was on white bread found out begrudgingly we could have had rye wheat or sour dough 2– price was now 7.95 not as priced on the menu and no indication of a price increase and 3– we did not get a copy of our bills or charge slips I have never charged anything and not gotten a copy of the bill Probably not going back

Love this place. Great food. I would suggest going when you aren’t in a hurry. It was kind of slow, but that could have been the day. It won’t stop me from going back. Really enjoyed this place.

Ok. I came back and it was great again. When I got here the owner. I will call her Mother greeted me and was very nice. The food and serves was as good or better than the first time. So, if you get a chance stop by I had the fried chicken both times. If you like good fried chicken ya gotta get it

One of my absolute favorite eateries. Donna Hafer and her staff are always excellent to be with in an ecletic atmosphere with excellent dishes. Be sure to enjoy some of the special glazed carrots offered every diner and some great house made pie for desert. The dining outdoors is just as nice while you watch the traffic on Main Street pass, especially when horses are part of that traffic.

Dogs are welcome on the he patio and they brought out water bowls for them. I don’t really know what the inside looks like but the outside was very inviting and the neighboring store had bird feeders so we sat and watched the birds and flowers while waiting for our meal.

Ok… so a long time ago a man proposes to his lady friend and suggests moving to St. Charles, MO. She replies yes, but only if her mother can come with them. His answer to his dilemma? Build a house and split it right down the middle so that he and his new wife can live on one side and his mother-in-law can live on the other. That way his wife can enter her mothers house anytime she pleases and he can be left to work without them both in his ear. Brilliant! This restaurant is both old and eclectic. They offer a limited menu of old time favorites, and a salad bar that is worth the trip. But the real star here is the pie. Daily, fresh pie is baked and when they run out, that’s it for the day. My favorite is the coconut cream pie! They offer a great lunch special with your choice of sandwich and a soup or salad for around $ 7. Definitely worth a try.

Feel like a decent meal in quirky surroundings? This is the place. Grand mom food, casseroles, baked chicken, pasta, all good. The cook often shows up with a pan of roasted vegetables from the oven, handing them out to every table. Fun casual dining in one of the nicer St Louis areas. Did I mention fruit and jello?

Like the decoration and service here. Good for dating! Their lunch combo is CHEAP, even during weekend! $ 6.99 for a sandwich + soup in a romantic sit-down restaurant, do I need to say more? The reason why I deduct 1 star is because the table cloth was little bit dirty. And the dessert’s price is almost the same as the lunch combo.

Yesterday for lunch. With an 11 a.m. reservation. They said they weren’t quite open yet. Well, then don’t accept an 11 a.m. reservation. We were both in big, bulky coats, and I espied a coat rack. But it overlapped a staircase, and I could just imagine my coat getting off its hook and falling into the netherlands below. Besides which, the vertical leeway for each coat was really wanting for a short jacket. .. not a long coat. Anybody walking along this hallway would brush against any long coat hanging there. ICK! We awkwardly stood in the vestibule(if that’s what you call it) for about 7 minutes before being seated, since they weren’t «open» yet. Then were seated in the beautiful dining room. It is a beautiful setting. Our server was on her third day, but she did a great job. I asked about a couple menu offerings, and she didn’t have a lot of info on those. I got the Mother-in-Law combo($ 6.99): half a sandwich(choice of turkey melt, roast beef sizzler or chicken salad) and choice of soup/salad/fries. I opted for the roast beef sizzler and the baked potato soup(bowl). My dining partner got the special cranberry-walnut chicken salad on croissant, that came with a salad, and a cup of the baked potato soup. The baked potato soup was bland and not cheesy. My last bite(why did I take that last spoonful???) was full of grit. ICKY! The roast beef sizzler was beef and cheese(Swiss?) on marble rye. There was plenty of beef, but not much flavor. My dining partner liked most the celery dressing on her salad. She didn’t even finish her cranberry-walnut chicken salad sandwich! Weird item on beverage refills. When we needed them, she took the whole glass away — so we were without until she returned. Seems rather inefficient. And annoying for diners, because she didn’t return all that quickly. I found myself reaching for my beverage, and there was nothing there. As to the woman’s restroom. .. the door was propped open. What? When we left, there were so many people coming in and waiting to be seated with no place to stand/sit while waiting — they were clogging the entire entryway. I had trouble getting out with the crowds.

A lovely house with traditional decorations and white linens on tables. We had brunch here on a Saturday and sat right next to the door facing the street. There was a nice breeze that floated in every once in a while. Our unsweetened teas were refreshing and refilled constantly on this warm spring day. I had the curry chicken with salad, a slice of melon, and a blueberry muffin in the shape of a star. The muffin was warm and moist; the melon fresh and cold; and the curry chicken light and tasty. It was served on a large piece of lettuce that I scraped to get every last morsel. The only thing I wasn’t a big fan of was the salad, which had a strange foamy dressing that was just a tad too sweet for me. Our waitress was sweet and friendly and had no complaints splitting our checks(five ways, five cards). A wonderful brunch experience overall. Highly recommended for a girls’ day out meal!
