I’ve been stalking this place for about a year on Unilocal, and I finally made it out there. It was friggin amazing. Okay, so… Complaints: 1. the cornbread was too greasy for me, which I was bummed about because I thought that would be my fav part. Maybe if the batter wasn’t as dense or something? 2. I waited about an hour for my meal. Definitely calling ahead next time. Praise: That was the tastiest meal I’ve had in a minute. Those pork chops? Unreal. Sauces/gravy were delicious. Fries and Mac n cheese were perfect, and the shrimp were bomb and giant. Seriously amazing. The people running it were also super kind and gave me a free drink for the wait! I wasn’t mad, I played on my phone and chatted with another girl that was waiting. I also kept asking everyone what their favorite item was. Lmao. I’m such a Unilocal creep. Will go again SOMANYTIMES

I had the chicken yams and banana pudding. I’ll make this concise. The chicken was very bland i was highly disappointed. I expected this from Sandra dees because the owners are white but these are Black folks. The yams were hard and unsweetened. No brown sugar and could probably use another 30 mins in the oven or something. Banana pudding had NO bananas! The ingredients were jello box banana pudding whip cream and vanilla wafers. I was highly disappointed and will never return. The Unilocal is wrong they close at 6pm everyday. I recommend trying to make fried chicken yourself or waiting for someone’s grandma to make some. I just wish someone told me this before I wasted my time and money. BUT the people are hella friendly so :)

Came here for the first time. The people here are great! And the twins Tori and Veronica are very sweet ladies. Y’all should try soul food here, really good. Got the fried chicken and super crispy and flavorful. Will be coming back and bringing friends!

I had the Gumbo and Cornbread which were both delicious! Gumbo: Full of flavor and very filling. Cornbread: Great balance of sweet and salty, a tad oily, but still amazing Service was warm and open, as expected from a family business, and wait times lag a bit, again to be expected from a family business. The outdoor seating is a bit shabby but comfortable and cozy on a nice day.

Tori’s place is home of the best cornbread and gumbo. Just thinking about this place makes my mouth water. My friends and I use to come here every Friday during my 6th period when I was in HS& now that I’ve graduated I still make an effort to come to this place. The burgers and fries are the absolute best. Everything is made fresh. Great quality food! Sweet sweet people and reasonable prices for how good the food is!

BEST soul Food spot in Sacramento/Elk Grove area! We love coming here for lunch dates. Tori & staff is AMAZING& Friendly. Not much space to sit & eat. But food is soo good I don’t mind eating in my car if I had too. But we’ve been lucky enough to always catch a table to eat. Cornbread is the bomb!!! Order extra! Haha friend chicken is perfect & pretty decent in size. The gumbo is off the hook too! I also love the pork chops & greens! Uhh now I’m craving Tori’s! Haha

I’m always skeptical of CA soul food; I’m always disappointed. I came here for the first time on a Wednesday, came back the following Thursday, and then again on Saturday. I got the fried chicken every time. Can’t stop won’t stop. Hands down best corn bread of my life. I especially like the black eyed peas, collard greens, and mac n’ cheese. Potato salad and yams were also very good. ooooo and that warm Peach cobbler. Everything is most excellent. The quality of the ingredients and the recipes are impressive. I can taste-tell that they don’t use their oil over and over like most places do; everything just tastes really really fresh and homemade, no chemicals, everything made from scratch. Never had anything here I didn’t like. I also like sitting outside! Patrons are chill, owners are great! Veronica is incredibly sweet. There is a small wait depending on restaurant traffic, but I mean it’s not fast food, you’re basically getting a home-cooked meal, and it’s worth it. I would rather take time for good food then have bad food come out faster, am I right? I basically want to bring everyone here I can. How can you argue with 3 giant pieces of fried chicken, cornbread, and a side for $ 8.50(+tax)? I mean honestly.

I came in from Phoenix where the soul food selection is pretty scarce. After seeing this place just a couple of blocks from where I was staying I knew I had to try it. The food was so good I damn near made a bulge in my pants.

I had the riblet dinner. Tender juicy ribs and great barbecue sauce. Black-eyed pea and collard greens side dishes were tangy and delicious. Cornbread is the best ever. First trip there, but not my last!

Home cooked meals! I came here because the fried chicken looked good and the reviews backed it up. I was super excited when I saw the line, long lines equal good food… right?! As I was standing in line I noticed everyone was ordering burgers. So I started asking people in line what they usually ordered and they ALL said the cheeseburger. So, I ordered the bacon cheeseburger. After a 35 min wait(reason for the long line) my bacon cheeseburger was ready. Simple but delicious! The lady at the register was nice and made me feel welcomed. Now I want to go back and try the fried chicken! Oh m, and for their Arnold Palmer!

Omfg! The gumbo here is amazing. A little pricey, but worth it for sure. The ladies and the one gentleman who run this establishment are extremely friendly as well. The ladies usually flirt and compliment me whenever I come through and order here. Which makes sense, considering soul food makes people extra sensual and horny…

This is my first review of any place here on Unilocal or anywhere to tell the truth. I know I know, I’m that guy that reads other people’s reviews but never posts his own. However, this place has changed that for me and I am so glad that I had the pleasure dining at this place. First off, the gentleman behind the screen was so cool and accommodating. I think he said that he was the owners brother. We had a small conversation and he even offered my a sample of gumbo. Onto the food, I ordered the smothered pork chops(you have to get them smothered as per the gentleman) with black eyed peas. I swear I wanted to pull over and start eating due to the beautiful smell that was coming from the bag, but I made it all the way home before caving. The next point is very important and made me more impressed by this establishment. I did not have to season anything anything and the taste of the pork chops, black eyed peas, and the corn pancake was absolutely amazing. I shared my meal with my wife who is kind of a picky eater and there she was sitting next to me going at it taking this plate down. It was enough for two people and I felt very satisfied afterwards. I will for sure come again and am already thinking about what I am going to get next. I’m thinking the fried chicken, the catfish, or maybe the gumbo. Man, this place is awesome and am very happy that I found this gem. Oh and did I mention, the cool guy behind the screen threw in an extra corn bread pancake. If you made it all the way down my review and are still on the fence about this place, don’t be because this review and basically everyone else’s will strongly suggest you give this place a try.

If ambience and inside eating is what you’re looking for, then just keep driving. If you want delicious home-style, southern cooking cooked to order and served with love… then, when in Sacramento — Tori’s — is the place. It was Friday night, I’d just finished my first week at a new job and wanted to take dinner home. Since I had a taste for soul food, I checked Unilocal and found Tori’s close by. After reading the reviews, I decided that it was worth the drive on this rainy night. The architecture is ghetto dump– complete with a window with a screen through which you order. Very eclectic«furnishings» «decorated» the outside dining areas. The«furnishings» looked like it was meant for the dumpster, but the owners could not bear to part with it. The restaurant is owned by Victoria(Tori) and her twin sister and their brother. While deciding on what to order, I was offered a sample of their gumbo!!! Oh my goodness!!! If this gumbo was any indication of the food quality, then I’ve finally found THEBEST soul food in Sacramento! I ordered fried chicken with greens and hot water cornbread and meat loaf, greens, hot water cornbread and a side of black eyed peas and an extra hot water cornbread. On the downside, it took about 45 minutes for my order to be ready. To be sure, they had a steady group of people ordering; however, the problem was that they had gotten a large catering order just before I arrived and, since everything(except the slow simmered items) are cooked to order, and there are only two people preparing food, they got behind. The brother/order taker was very apologetic and kept thanking me for my patience. Since it was cold and wet, I told him that I was going to sit in my car. He told me that he’d bring my food to the car — which he did. The chicken order consisted of 3, perfectly seasoned, tender, and crispy pieces; very tasty greens and delicious black eyed peas. The hot water cornbread is in a class by itself. I didn’t need the extra one because each cornbread was the size of a pan — not normal pancake size. It was SOOOOOGOOD! Corn-y, crunchy on the outside and just a perfect accompaniment to the food. I had the meat loaf — and I NEVER order meatloaf at a restaurant — but the gumbo taste sold me on the quality of their food. The meatloaf did not disappoint. It was a large portion, smothered in a rich, flavorful onion and mushroom gravy. I also had the greens, black-eyed peas and hot water cornbread. I am a definite customer and will be sharing this experience with my local family and co workers. I moved from St Louis and used to eat at Sweetie Pie’s, which had very delicious food. The only thing Tori’s doesn’t have and that Sweetie Pie’s has is a larger variety of veggies. Tori’s cornbread beats Sweetie Pie’s, in my opinion. If you want a great comfort food meal, head to Tori’s. Be prepared to wait or call ahead.

Love this place! We spent a week in NoLa and I missed the food so much that I had to have some more, nothing around Sacramento… Till I found this place. Try the catfish, you won’t be disappointed. Tip — call in a order before you get here. Probably not the safest area to be waiting a long period of time for.

Great price for a great deal. BF& I both got the combo of fried chicken which comes with not 1, not 2, but 3 pieces of chicken! Yes you read it correctly, THREE pieces of chicken, and it also comes with one side, and a corn bread. We also got an extra cornbread & a peach cobbler. Our total came to about $ 24 The corn bread is really good! And it’s also a big piece. It has a slightly sweet flavor to it. The chicken was good too but it wasn’t as crunchy and my BF said one of his pieces were dry. You can also choose which part of chicken you want to order: thighs, wings, or legs. We both didn’t really like the potato salad because all you can taste is relish. The cobbler was good but a little too sweet for me & I love sweets. BF said it had a weird taste to it. The workers here are friendly & if I were to ever come back, I will definitely call in before coming because it took 30 mins for our food to be ready.

Hot water corn bread. is soooooooo goooooooooooooood. I could eat like 50 of those if I had more stomachs. Though it was a sweltering hot day, still decided to get some fried chicken. We met Tori and she was so friendly and sweet. Her store and restaurant were all super hospitable. We got two orders of chicken, a side of cornbread, onion rings, and beans and rice. She even gave me an extra hot water corn bread :) We were sooo stuffed and couldn’t even finish so we took like half of them to go. I love how the food comes out so amazingly fresh. Tori did warn us that it’ll take ~15 mins since she made it all fresh, and that’s what we wanted. We listened to old school music on a soothing radio station and talked while we waited for food to come out. And when the food arrived, it was piping hot!!! So fresh :) The best I’ve had. Really wished we were here on the weekends to enjoy her gumbo. But sadly it wasn’t offered the day we came. SOSAD!!! Would recommend? If you are driving through or visiting Sacramento, yes pay Tori a visit. No regrets :) !

My phone died right when I got here so, I apologize for no pics or check in but on to the good stuff. Tori’s Place has to be the BEST Soul Food I’ve had in Sacramento. The first thing I noticed about Tori’s was the hospitality. The owner makes it a point to converse with every single customer. I also caught myself talking to other patrons waiting for their food. It has a barber type feel with the conversations going on but better because instead of waiting to get a fresh cut, you’re waiting on delicious food. My girlfriend and I ordered the fried chicken with fries and the Catfish and prawns combo. The fried chicken had the crunch that you look for in fried food as well as the buttery juiciness in every single bite. The chicken was also seasoned with a nice mild spice just to give the chicken breast a bit of a kick. The Catfish and prawns were just as amazing. It had the same butter crunch and juiciness that the chicken had. Only difference was that this combo came with an amazing tartar sauce that put the dish over the top. The portions were very generous, to the extent that 2 people could easily eat one combo platter. At this point I was stuffed, but you can’t go to a soul food restaurant and not try the peach cobbler. Let me tell you, the peach cobbler was on point. Warm, juicy, sweet with a bit of tang. Only thing it was missing was vanilla ice cream served on top. Tori’s Place is a hidden gem in the Del Paso Heights area. This is definitely my go to spot for AUTHENTIC soul food from now on. Key word, AUTHENTIC.
