Another downtown Sacramento shop that is surprising great. It has about 15 soups to select from with some common ones like chowder to the more ethnic Romanian mulligatoni. I even tried alligator stew! One big plus is that they let you have unlimited samplers. I felt so bad to keep asking but they practically forced it onto me. In a good way :) It has Greek, Mediterranean, and Hungarian flavors. So they have chicken lemon to Romanian stew. Even some curry chicken flavors! I didn’t necessarily like the chicken curry since i thought it was too rich and i wouldn’t be able to finish it all. I got the soup sampler with 4 small cups of soup with a big foccacio bread. They have lots of soup and sandwich/salad deals so take advantage of it. Parking is a bust since it’s down town so keep circling!

It’s been a long time coming for this place at the Downtown neighborhood after I bought a Groupon offer for a long, lost visit before I started using the Unilocal app back in 2011. This year, I finally revisited once again to re-experience it. This deli café named, «Muntean’s Sandwiches & Soup» brings the customers to taste their amazing selections of fresh deli made sandwiches, wonderful homemade soups which you can try it for a sample once you’ve arrived, and elegant arrays of fresh salads. As I entered, the atmosphere is quite warming and interesting; the concept is much like visiting to a local deli shop filled with Romanian murals especially Sacramento murals too just like Sam’s Mediterranean Cuisine in Davis, CA. Playing classical music is also a great choice for this business by easing off the customer’s migraines while you’re coming in. What a perfect idea. The servers and the owner of Muntean’s are doing an amazing job for making the customers like me an fines, honest service! Overall, no cons at all. Now onto the food! I ordered the combo deal(Costs: $ 10.50) which I picked the turkey sandwich and a cup of Lobster Bisque after trying soup samples. As I ate it, it tasted very magnificent! The turkey sandwich is totally perfection with the freshest ingredients available from tomato slices, lettuce, and mayonnaise especially slices of wheat bread too. The soup on the other hand tasted very good. The Lobster Bisque is on point and flavorful. It tasted like Clam Chowder, yet it does have good blends of spices of black peppers and broth flavored lobster pieces. Not a bad lunch meal at all! Parking at Muntean’s can be challenging to park. You can park at the nearest surface metered street parking nor the parking garage if it’s available. Otherwise, you can also ride a bike, walk, or use public transportation easier without the hassles. All in all, Muntean’s Sandwiches & Soup is the most wonderful local deli café that I’ve ever enjoyed the most! Perfect for lunch break on the go, or at anytime you want to preferred. A well, worthy experience! My rating: 4 solid stars.

Love this place! I frequent here for lunch often and love the peasant lunch which includes a salad, soup and bread for $ 9. Favorites are French onion, asparagus and mushroom.

For those who remember the family who ran the old Hannibals on 6th& L when it was part of the Downtown Plaza, Munteans is essentially the same place with a different name run by the same people. They were in Roseville for six years and have been at the current location for about five years. Their mulligan and beef gyro were tasty. So glad I found them after all these years.

Mom and pop shop I’d say with 4 – 5 tables in the front and a side room with a few more. They have about 16 soups and they change daily. Samples are offered for all the soups for you to decide which one you would like to end up purchasing. I ordered the soup and cold sandwich combo, Mexicali soup and half turkey avocado sandwich. The sandwich was a regular sandwich I can make at home, regular bread from the store. The soup was amazing! It was perfectly spicy. I think that their soup had the dark brown salsa in it that is served for chips at the salsa bar at a Mexican restaurant to make it spicy. It had a good amount of shredded chicken in it. It was a thicker based soup, not watery and definitely hearty. The combo was $ 9 before tax. They had the big cup of soup for $ 16. I’d definitely go back to try other soups!!!

Who doesn’t love Muntean’s? I eat here all the time and am never disappointed, best soup in Sacramento and the staff are hilarious and very accommodating. There is always a new soup to try and although some of the combos you wouldn’t think you would enjoy, they end up always being my favorite. Fair price and great food and service. If you haven’t tried Muntean’s, you should! They have more than soup as well, but you’d be missing out if you didn’t try at least a cup of soup with your sandwich.

This place is awesome. Came to Sacramento for a conference and wanted something local for lunch. They’re right across from the Sheraton. The tomato rice soup is the best I tried. Oh! They let you have samples of their soup too! Tuna on a warm pita was delicious. I can see why this place has such a high rating. I will definitely be back next time I’m up in Sacramento!

I love coming here when I am trying to fight a cold or when it’s cold. Actually, I like to eat here all the time! Who doesn’t love soup? They have a LOT of soups here(10 – 15?) that change every day. You can sample any and as many soups as you want!!! There is a soup for everyone — creamy, brothy, seafood, meat, and veggie. My favorites are the Romanian Mulligatoni, Romanian onion, potato sausage, and smoky salmon chowder. The beef chili is hella spicy, but tasty! The Romanian onion is perfect for dipping bread in. I usually get the soup lover combo since I get bored of the same flavor. The soup lover combo comes with your choice of 4 soups in mini cups and choice of bread. I always choose the focaccia so I don’t remember the other bread option. The focaccia is always fresh, warm, and soft — so good! When I first ordered the soup lover combo and saw the size of the mini cups, I regretted my decision thinking I would still be hungry after lunch. The 4 mini cups are actually the perfect size!!! I think they add up to a small to medium cup of soup and it is definitely filling with the bread. The bread is usually a huge piece too. They are very generous with their food! The staff are very friendly and welcome you forward to sample their soups. They never seem annoyed or rushed even when some people are sampling ALL the soups. There is usually a long line, but it goes by pretty fast. If you don’t like soup, they have a lot of other items such as sandwiches and greek dishes. I have tried the cold sandwiches in the past and it was nothing spectacular. Definitely recommend the soups!!! Happy slurping!

This place is always bustling during prime lunch hours. The owner greets you and treats you as if you’ve been friends for 20 years. Unlimited soup samples but word to the wise and and use caution when tasting. There’s only been a handful of times where I don’t completely scorch some tastebuds. Things I’ve learned that are not made in house: –Spanakopita –Baklava Things that are made in house: –Cornbread Easily the best thing to get here is the Romanian Mulligatawny with some cornbread. And apparently they have a sweet cornbread option and a spicy option. I went spicy. Delicious.

So there’s two major parts to this place: Soups and Sandwiches. Their sandwiches are good, not as amazing as Dad’s Sandwiches down the street, but a decent sandwich. However, anything that the sandwiches may lack, the soups absolutely make up for… Their soups are all delicious, fresh, hot, and plenty of samples of whatever you think is your flavor of the day. I like their fire-roasted tomato, the mushroom soup, split pea soup, beef chili, and pumpkin/butternut-something-awesome. Their samplers are a little small for me, but the flavors are just spot on for the variety that they have… Totally worth stopping in, and make sure that you are mindful of the lunch hour rush. Great spot, and follow on Facebook to see what soups are coming up(although not always current).

Came here with a co-worker for lunch yesterday. Line when clear out the door and honestly was like«Dude no way we’re going to get through this line in time before break ends» but low and behold the line progressed very quickly. The deli is quaint and a little old school but obviously a popular venue for people working in downtown. So let me just say I love that they don’t have solely sandwiches and 2 kinds of soup. No this place has a variety of things but best of all numerous soups to choose from. I sampled the Hungarian and seafood jambalaya and ended up ordering the jambalaya with a pastrami on sourdough. Soup was hot, delicious, not too thick not too soupy. Pastrami was a cut above(pun intended) but honestly a reasonably priced delicious place to enjoy a great lunch especially on a cold day in a charming little deli. My only suggestion is if serving jambalaya that they should add rice and make hot sauce readily available. 5 stars for Muntean’s!

Nice little ethnic sandwich shop near downtown Sacramento. Price for the large meal deal which includes a full cold sandwich and a bowl of soup came in at $ 12. Quite high considering it does not come with a drink. This may have been due to a $ 1 increase while selecting their chili as a soup. I chose the chicken salad sandwich and bought it had a nice light flavor with a hint of relish. It was a good sandwich however nothing exceptional hat would allow it to stand out. The chili however was great! It had a very thick texture and also was not overflowing with beans. The taste of the chili was a bit on the spicer side and did not contain a strong Mexican like flavor. Overall it was a good place that I would visit back again. Next time I’m getting the soup sampler combo with cornbread! That meal looked totally delicious!

Being soup-lovers, my boyfriend and I unhesitatingly gave this place a try after he discovered it on Unilocal. We were in Sacramento on a business trip, and it was our last day before the 6hour drive back home. So, of course, we wanted to fill our tummies with what the area had to offer! Inside the place was like any ordinary small restaurant with a wide front counter, a kitchen in the back, a few small tables, and soda machine/fridge. We were overwhelmed with the variety of soups to try because they all sounded so delicious. But guess what? They give SAMPLES! **Be careful though~ the soups are HOT and extremely flavorful. I ordered a Turkey & Avocado Sandwich with Chicken Garlic Soup. *yum! My boyfriend ordered an Italian Sandwich with Tomato Bisque Soup. *yum! We also ordered an extra bowl of Clam Chowder Soup to share(why not). *yumm! The portions are just right for an overall quick, light lunch that was satisfyingly filling.

Vibe /Layout Today was a cloudy and had little sprinkles outside. It was a perfect weather for something warm like soup or noodles. I couldn’t make up my mind, but wanted to try somewhere new. The inside has some different murals inside which is kind of cool. Plenty of tables to sit at. One shared restroom. It was sort of a simple quick pick up lunch. Service is friendly — the owner is funny and knows all the regular customers. Also love how they let you test out the soup samples before ordering. Food Too many decisions to choose from, soup, salad, or sandwiches. Soup There are at least 6 to 8 different kinds of soup choices to choose from. The Soup i finally got to settle down with was chicken gumbo. They were really nice and let people sample the soups before you buy them. Chicken gumbo This was a bit too salty for me. I felt like i was eating salt in every bite of the soup. Got very thirsty and had finished 2 bottles of water. The soup was warm but not hot in temperature. It was hearty and flavorful. The ingredients inside consisted of corn, veggies, rice, chicken, and herbs. The texture of the soup was more on the creamy side and was thick as well. Pastrami Sandwich It was a half combo deal, so i had gotten the pastrami! There is like 4 different kind sod bread to choose from. mayo and mustard. Then they put a layer of meat, not a lot but average. Then the produce which was lettuce and tomato. The sandwich was cold not hot as advertise. There is not specialty with this sandwich but just like a regular homemade kind. Simple and quick! Price The price was $ 8.95 plus tax. In the future i can skip the sandwich and just a good cup of soup for 5 bucks. Overall it was an okay experience. Didn’t find anything wow, but a good vibe with feeling like i am at home eating a family cook meal.

I discovered Muntean’s Sandwiches and Soups due working downtown. Walking around, I popped into this restaurant. The first thing I noticed are the murals, all over the walls, and hand painted. Cute. I am immediately asked what kind I want to try. Try what? Soup of course, they answer. Who doesn’t want to try a sample of lunch before they buy? Such a simple thing has made me a fan for life. It appears to be a family run business and everyone behind the counter is friendly and happy to help. My first time in I tried 4 of the soups and eventually settled on a vegetarian chili and half a sandwich. The chili was very thick and filled with veggies, beans, chili’s and spices, but not too hot. The veggie sandwich was filled with every kind of produce they had and extra pickles(my request). It was delicious. I must brag about the soups: I have yet to buy one I do not like. Every day they offer different recipes, sometimes all week, sometimes for just one day. Does something sound strange? Try it! They have mulligatawny, Romanian stews, traditional soups like chicken noodle and vegetable and creamy bisques. They have 3 sections: Beef/Lamb/Meat, Chicken/Seafood, and Vegetarian. Quite a selection! I can recommend any of the cream based soups(creamy tomato bisque yum) and the vegetarian chili/stews, as well as the chicken Romanian and Hungarian stew. They have a chicken alfredo soup– fattening but so amazing. All the soups are homemade and so is the focaccia. As for the sandwiches, they are standard fare on your choice of bread, condiments and deli meats/cheeses. The falafel is outstanding on soft pita-like bread and the yogurt sauce is very authentic. I get distracted by the soups every single time. These are the true shining stars of this place. Sample as many as you like, they really encourage you to! Plenty of room to sit and hang out or take your deliciousness to go.

So many samples! On the outside, Muntean’s looks like your average soup and sandwich deli. This long-time running family establishment goes above and beyond that average experience. First off, the counter staff pushes samples onto you. If you try fewer than three soups, they’ll almost make you question your final decision. Luckily for me and my indecisive self, I sampled about seven soups before settling on the tomato basil(which I ironically didn’t even sample). All sandwiches come with a free soup(yay). The sandwich was good. Their homemade focaccia was chewy and a perfect carrier for the soup as I dipped bite after bite into it. The ingredients made it feel very elementary school(shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, American-like smoked cheese) with an adult flair(BACON!), but it was exactly what I wanted for lunch. The soup was more complex than your standard tomato soup, with a layer added by the basil, and a continual spice that made every bite a bite. Best part is, this combo was only $ 8, and it was enough food to keep us going all afternoon. Wish I had a Muntean’s by my office.
