Don Quixote’s Mexican Grill

Met some friends here before a Kings game for their one-​night only, $ 1 taco, 1– year anniversary special. Whew that was a mouthful! (That’s what she said.) I would probably never have gone here if my friends hadn’t suggested it. I’ve been to the Don Quixote’s on Watt Ave once, and it was ok, but not outstanding enough for a second visit. But who can resist $ 1 tacos!!! Among the 5 of us, we shared 30 street tacos, filled with chicken, carne asada, and carnitas. My favorite was the chicken and least favorite was the bland, almost tough carne asada strips. The chips and salsa bar was well-​stocked and I only found 1 salsa that tasted weird. For being busy and packed on this anniversary celebration night, they kicked out those 30 tacos fairly quickly. Quantity over quality at this point. But I’m not complaining. For $ 1, these tacos were a hit. I just probably won’t become a Don Quixote regular when there are more aurthentic taqueria choices in the Natomas/​North Sac area.

Oh man had to drop it to two stars. Since my first meal. I realize the only thing we liked was the puffy tacos and they are great! Otherwise this place is just average. The chile verde quesadilla was way too salty, the chile relleno was just basic and simple and too expensive for its little size.

We came here for their anniversay $ 1 taco night. We got asada, adobada and carnitas. They were all very good but the carnitas was the best. Not authentic but still pretty good. I would come back.

I came for the $ 1 tacos today, got 1 of each (steak/​chicken/​pork) they were all good but I would say steak is my favorite. They let you choose all your toppings which is pretty cool! Salsa bar is well stocked and staff gets you through the line pretty quick. Chipotle style

We enjoyed this sooo much! Family-​owned business, they have two locations. The salsas were really good, I’m a wuss and don’t want things spicy hot but flavorable and the roasted tomato salsa and pico de gallo were favs. They have a very nice selection of mild and hot levels. Two people working and we hit at dinner time so they were backed up a bit but once they got to us they really made an effort to get us exactly what we wanted. Horchata was excellent, sweet but not sickeningly so. I could have just oinked out on the chips and salsa. Hubby really liked the burrito bowl, picky daughter said the beans and rice were the best she has ever had and our vegetarian friend loved the veggie burrito. Cool thing about the rice is it is made with brown rice and has so much flavor! Definitely come here!!!

Omg! Worse Mexican food ever!!! Not even Mexican! The pozole had no hominy and the carne asada was not even asada. What a disappointment.

I sat down for lunch at Don Quixote’s last week. It has a relaxed atmosphere and a friendly staff. The store was very clean and in good condition.
I had a burrito. I made a couple trips to the salsa bar too! The burrito was huge! It was delicious and very hearty. Filled with beans, rice, and pork… I made a couple trips to the salsa bar too. The chips are fresh and crunchy. They have a good selection of salsa, mild to hot!

Best breakfast burrito. $ 4.34. Very filling with nice balance of ingredients. Very clean establishment. Ordered to go.

one star off, because sometimes i feel like i’m bugging the servers to make my burrito when i come in. and as soon as they’re done, they disappear in the back and i typically don’t see them again. but no bother to me, i can mow down my burro and salsa in peace with no side eye for second and third trips to the salsa bar.

After a busy morning of activities my girlfriend was as hungry as the infamous Sancho (Don Quijote’s sidekick). Pressed by her changing moods and the attractive name of a place named after one of my favorite book characters, we went in. This is how it went:
1. Food: the Torta we had was ok, she ate half of it while we waited for some mini-​chimi-​changa. The chimis were sub-​par, the chicken inside them was covered with black pepper and tasted a little bit old.
I cannot complain about free stuff, but the chips tasted a bit stale.
The salsa’s however were descent.
Next time my Sancho and I go to a place named after Cervantes’ masterpiece, i hope our decision-​making is based on reason, not our moody-​stomach

Nope. Would never go back. The food is not good. The service was fine but my food (chicken quesadilla) was extremely bland.

Very good food porions are excellent for the price, staff was friendly. Self service style ordering.

I tried their Chipotle Ranch Burrito was OK. It was lacking some flavor and I would much rather have some cabbage then soggy lettuce in a burrito. Was very friendly service and seems to be a popular place. Maybe I am not ordering the right thing, but it was what they were known for online.

Tried the breakfast burrito. Greasy. The tortilla was rubbery. I ordered cheese /​egg. I got greasy everything. Not my thing. What made it worse was that it lacked flavor. Of any kind.
I won’t go back.

It’s very hard to find an authentic Mexican restaurant in Sacramento, just because they have «Mexican» in their name, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good/​authentic. I never knew about this restaurant, apparently there’s another one on Watt Ave., but I don’t travel that way very often, this place was pretty much found by accident going to BevMo across the street. There’s plenty to choose from on the menu. Me, who’s in love with Chipotle’s burrito bowl, I decided to order just that… a burrito bowl. There’s lots of toppings to choose from and I did just that.
From what I ordered I can say, that the food is so good. And the value is just as good. For $ 7.75, I was able to get such a huge portion of food with no limits. That’s even cheaper than Chipotle! And it tastes great!

This is our first time and I’m so impressed with the food and service. Huge serving with the money you paid. The only thing I’m concern was the rice it was a little bit salty but the best was the salsa bar. When they say it’s hot it was really hot like the habanero salsa. I love the medium roasted salsa, it was perfect. It’s highly recommended and for sure we are coming back here.

We’ve had a local taqueria that was a favorite of ours for quite some time but between the lack of polite counter help (which was always lacking, despite the owner being a nice guy) hit and miss quality and a recent (undeserving) price hike in catering we decided it was time to try something new. We were instant fans of Don Quixote’s. Everything was great from the food, very friendly counter staff and clean establishment. We’ve been on a handful of occasions and this seems consistent. But this isn’t where the 5 stars comes from…
I purchase catering orders a few times a year and when it comes to Mexican food I tend to lean on the old fav. Although no one has ever been a fan of the meat — dry, bland, chopped up like ground beef. So bad that we never wanted left overs — and there was always a ton! This past weekend was looking to be the same but I thought I’d call DQ and see what they could offer. Even though Linda (the very sweet owner) and I ran into some follow up email/​communication flaws we were able to place our order and couldn’t have been happier!!! The rice, chicken and asada was just as perfect as the price. Absolutely Delish! In fact, I was hoping desperately for left overs and there wasn’t much. .
If you need to purchase food for catering PLEASE call Linda. I’m just so excited that I’ve found this gem!!! Thank you!

Had the super nachos to go with carne asada. The service was fast and the staff friendly. The nachos were good and came out to $ 8 and some change. It reminds me of Chipotle, but with more options. I will be back to try something different.

Free salad bar. Free coffee. Glass plates and nice tidy restaurant but all this doesn’t even matter.
I got their chipotle ranch Chix because its popular and recommended and i fell in love with this place. I use to go down the street to chipotle once a week and looks like i found my new favorite spot.
I rarely give 5 stars but this deserves every bit of it.

What a delicious meal! Look at all the food.
Inside the foil is 4 flour tortillas. They even have orange crush. I declined the guacamole, or it would have been in the photo. Includes the chips and salsa bar.
I could not eat it all. Ill be back.
