Motor City Gas

The service was excellent, they were very knowledgable and hospitable. My wife and I decided to try something new, because we are not whiskey-​ers traditionally. I
can’t say that we are now whiskey-​ers having tried the vast selection of whiskey at Motor City Gas, but, if we were whiskey-​ers, we would probably come here every day, or weekend. The atmosphere is very chill, and warm. It was defintley a cool experience, and something different to do.

The comfortable and relaxed atmosphere allows you to truly enjoy the best whiskey, or rye around. Friendly staff is willing to explain the distilling process and even show customers the distilling area and the casks. The overall experience is fantastic!

This is one of our favorite place to grab a relaxing drink in Royal Oak. I did not like whisky before my husband and I started going to Motor City. Their cocktails are fantastic… I haven’t had one that I didn’t completely and thoroughly enjoy. The atmosphere is cozy and a comfortable place to just sit and chill or chat with your friends.
My husband loves old fashions but often has a hard time finding a «good» one. He loves their old fashions. I’ve tried their mint julips, old fashion, and The Ward… they have all been wonderful. Plus, the staff is friendly and you can tell they love the products.

This place is the opposite of «big corporate distillery.» It’s an awesome little place with a very speak easy type atmosphere that eliminates as much as possible the distance between the place that makes your whiskey and the place where you drink your whiskey. Imagine a legitimate beer tap room, only for whiskey.
A cool dog running around, really really good whiskey, and super nice owners always willing to answer questions about the product and to make sure you are enjoying what you ordered make this little place worth the trip for me.

Motor City Gas is a fantastic place with GREAT whiskey. I especially love their new Apple Sauce Whiskey. It’s perfect for those cool fall days and leaves you wanting more. I’m eager to have more soon. Even my wife, who isn’t much of a drinker, really enjoyed this. Stop by and give it a try, you won’t be disappointed.

At the recommendation of a fellow Unilocaler I have finally came to experience this place. Located a bit off the beaten path on 4^th there is plenty of street parking to be had.
Make no mistake, this is a whiskey distillery. And in that regard, they do it well. You can tell this is the type of place that isn’t going to half ass something. Their whiskey definitely upholds that philosophy.
They do not serve food, just whiskey. But not your run of the mill Jim Beam. This is creative, innovative stuff. A chocolate cherry single malt. Cherry Apple smoked bourbon. Mmmmm.
They offer pours of all their whiskey and are consistently coming out with new types. They also serve cocktails. I would highly recommend the mint julep, but I enjoy the simplicity of this cocktail so I’m biased. There’s nothing but simple syrup and mint leaves.
Lots of space to sit with groups or stand if you feel like it. They do offer pretzels to snack on as well. The bartenders are friendly and more than willing to give their recommendations. There’s a small bar area of 8 people to sit at.
Overall: a great happy hour place to check out before going to dinner, or a night out on the town. A must in Royal Oak if you like whiskey.

Absolutely splendid place to stop, relax, and enjoy some delicious hooch. Friendly, chatty staff recommends drinks based on your personal tastes and interests. I was given a person tour of the process and was amazed by the quality of the product. The bartender discussed the history of the establishment and product in detail.
This place is really cool! You have to stop in and try for yourself.

Amazing! Unbelievable quality and amazing knowledgeable and helpful staff. The shop dog they have greeting the customers is very friendly and will probably hump your leg… no extra charge for this

Really impressed with the whiskey being made here. Both the Royal Oaked Rye and Belly Up Bourbon are now standard bottles in my home bar.
Super friendly owner, who is always available to discuss his distilling process, and a «Speak Easy» style tasting room makes Motor City Gas a «Must Try» destination.

Great local spot with friendly, knowledgeable staff and fantastic cocktails! Tried a delicious espresso cocktail that was so unique. The staff were very welcoming and tailored drinks to your own taste. Can’t wait to go back and try more!

I am not a rye/​bourbon drinker at all but everything I have tried here is absolutely amazing. I have tried $ 100+ bottles bought at the store and nothing even compares.
Not only are the products great (if you’re not a bourbon drinker I definitely recommend the Cherry Bomb Shot) but the staff is friendly and fun. The environment is wonderful. And they are dog friendly– I brought mine in and she played with Rye, the owner’s dog, all night while I drank.
I can’t say enough wonderful words about Motor City Gas.

Stopped in for a tasting during an art fair the other day. My buddy and I tried both the rye and the bourbon. At $ 3 per taste it wasn’t a hard decision to make.
I’m no whiskey expert but I liked the rye alot and could see myself using it for manhattans and old fashioneds. The bourbon was nice as well with the addition of an ice cube to open up the flavors a bit.
My only criticism would be the décor and image of the place. It’s sort of like a cracker barrel, hill billy, barn or something, I would have gone for a more urban theme being the «Motor City» and all.

If you enjoy good whiskey served by friendly, knowledgeable staff in a warm atmosphere, this will quickly become your happy place.
