If you ever eat a slim jim snack stick from 7⁄11 or Quick check put it right back on the shelf and get you but over to scwind’s for there version of snack sticks! My fav is spicy snack stik and wash it down with a ice cold beer. Some times I keep it in a brown bag in fridge for a day or two then eat it .The Best plus quality ingrediants. Did u ever read the label on a slim-jim of what they put in it? Slim-jim should be locked up for serving toxic snack. Don’t ever snap into a slim jim, head over to scwinds for snak stik, you won’t be disappointed. Wish they would make beef jerky!

Customer service wasn’t all that good, the lady that helped me didn’t seem to enjoy been there and despite the fact that I asked twice about having a certain number is sausages she still gave me one less than what I needed. Like I said I got a variety of sausages and had 4 people people trying it, we all agreed that the cases were so hard it was hard to bite on it. Flavor was just ok. The potato salad was worst I’ve ever tried. Flavor was weird and the consistency of the potato was really really off. Like if it was really old and mushy or it had been defrosted. Not coming back unfortunately…

Used to love the landjaeger but man is it gross now. Half the size and greasy as hell. Threw away $ 30 on an order. NEVERAGAIN. This is off my list. Loved it when it was a proper German sausage store.

This a great meat spot. Got 4 hot dogs and they were out of this world. The real deal. Also got oven baked turkey cold cuts and was so much better than your average supermarket. The turkey was tender and tasty. Will definitely go back to try other items on the menu. Highly recommend for meats.

Great place, fantastic owner, the Real Deal. If you think you are doing well buying your meat at Shoprite, you are very mistaken. Prices and quality are far better here. Support local!!!

As a German kid raise in a German house. This is the true find. This is the real deal. Fresh and delicious. The deli meats are spot on I felt as if I was in Germany«which everyone should visit». My mother is about to turn 80. Happy birthday mom. I now know where I am getting my catering. All the standards for everyone who is German at heart. Even Drew from Unilocal might have a brat!

Everyone knows this is a 5 star German butcher but my review is for the BBQ side of the store. I’ve now sampled the BBQ3 times and think I have a good handle on the Schwinds BBQ fare. The first time, I went I had the brisket sandwich with 2 sides(coleslaw and potato salad). This was not a good experience. The bun was too sweet, the sides are an afterthought and it was drown in overly sweet sauce. Through all that mediocrity, the brisket seemed very good. I decided to give them another try. Remembering that the stores drink selection is sparse and there is no seating. On my next visit, I get my drink at the 7 – 11 up the street and just order a ½ lb of brisket(no sauce) and ½ lb of pulled pork(sauced mixed in) — NOSIDES. WOW what a difference! For NJ, the brisket is very good and the pulled pork(with the sweet sauce) was good as well. This is serious BBQ. On my last visit, I get the smoked chicken wings(cold — just smoked not fried) and I brisket sandwich(I pick the bread) ask for easy on the sauce. The chicken wings are huge and tasty(even cold) and would be great warm. My request for light sauce is ignored and the bread was still bad but the brisket still shined. In conclusion, Schwinds smokes meat very well — even for NJ. The execution around this quality meat is subpar. If you want very good BBQ, just buy your smoked meat of choice from Schwinds, un-sauced and nothing else. Get your sauce, drinks and sides elsewhere and make yourself a great BBQ meal to your liking, at home, using Schwinds as your outsourced smoker. I mean who really has 13 hours to smoke brisket anyway?

Super friendly staff. I always come here for my freshly ground pork. The liverwurst is the best! So incredibly tasty. I have yet to try their bbq, but it always smells amazing when I go in there.

While the meat products and the BBQ at Schwind’s are excellent I must consider the whole experience in my review. The staff at Schwind’s are so unpleasant and they all come across as depressed that it is uncomfortable. I love the variety of products and would love to learn about the unique products they offer but any question is met with annoyance. The poor customer service keeps me from supporting Schwind’s.

Love this place, use to go all the time when I lived closer. Their homemade Hotdogs skin on are great. They also have some with jalapeño and cheese ! There Veal sausage is killer too. There kielbasa is very good although I do make my own with my brother twice a year.

We have been fans of Schwind’s pork products for some time and recently tried their BBQ for the first time. While the pulled pork and smoked brisket were good for Jersey BBQ, their sides need work. The potato salad and cole slaw were weak at best, both largely tasteless. Simply adding diced celery to the potato salad would help, but some additional spices would be beneficial for both dishes.

I went to this store when I was 5 with my parents, at least once a week. Now I’m more than 10 times that age. Got some of the smoked kielbasa on my last business trip back to NJ. They vacuum packed it for me and I fed ex’d it back to california. Great and friendly place.

I recently visited the store and was very disapointed. I found the German potatoe salad very runny and without much taste. I believe it had been previously frozen and if not, sure had that consistency. The homemade sauerkraut was a bit on the blah side and the metwurst was tasteless. Some of the other sausages we tried had a skin so tough we couldn’t eat them. Not sure why our experience isn’t like the raving reviews we read here. Maybe a bad day… I used to go here in the 70’s and 80’s when the first owners ran the place. They passed on the recipes when they sold it. So not sure what is going on. Very disapointing… just not the same…

The German in me just can’t stay away from Schwinds. I first stopped at Schwinds about 10 years ago after picking up tables and chairs for a huge barbeque we were hosting… I wanted to try something new and get something special for the BBQ. As I pulled into the lot I was overwhelmed with the delicious aroma of smoked meat. Growing up with German grandparents this was a smell of my youth, of going to a local German butcher and picking up whatever we were going to have for dinner. I swear, if my grandfather were alive today, he’d come to Schwinds. The smoked meats, especially the kielbasa, are so great I can’t say much more than that and the potato pancakes are as good as my grandfather used to make. One of my favorite treats is the natural casing hot dog with cheese and jalepenos inside… OMG they are so good! They also make some of the best hot Italian suasage here-the first time I had it I expected a touch of heat like Premio… no way-great spiciness! I can’t say enough about how great this place is if you are in the mood for a great German butcher. If you love smoked meat and other great foods, stop by Schwinds and try something! It might cost you more than you might expect, but it’s worth it. In fact, after writing this review I need to stop there this weekend…

Old-world smoked sausages, primal cuts of meat and(new in 2014) take-out BBQ at lunch! Don’t miss the freshly baked soft pretzels on Saturday mornings. They import them from Germany frozen and bake them in the shop. Unfortunately they run out quickly. The Schwind’s smoked kielbasa is great, point to a full one hanging from the big rack or just take half. I very much like the Landjaeger, these are smoked pairs of approximately eight-inch long, slightly rectangular sausages that are great to carry on a hike etc. Also recommend the Leberkaese, which is a baked veal loaf, they often have small ones on top of the counter still warm from the oven. My kid calls this«hot dog meat» and it definitely is similar in color and texture, but not in taste and I like to think the ingredients are far superior! Brown a slice in a pan, add an egg and enjoy. I like the fresh sausage a lot, especially the Weisswurst which is a veal sausage that you buy fully cooked. Mandatory with Weisswurst is the sweet, grainy Bavarian mustard, look for blue metal tubes of it in the fridge on the side of the shop. Also Schwind’s is the only place I have found Nueremberger bratwurst in North Jersey. This is standard bratwurst meat and seasoning but made in a size that Americans would prolly call breakfast sausage. In Nueremberg they slap several of these freshly grilled on a crispy crackly roll(Broetchen), mmm that takes me back. This shop has a large variety of bolognas and other cold cuts that are fully cooked, they slice them thinly so you can load them up on good bread with mustard. And they even slice the wurst like in Germany — the plastic casing gets sliced with the meat so you have to pick it out at home. Uh, it’s not such an endearing habit but there it is. Occasionally I get pork steaks here, I don’t know the name of the cut but after marinating for a few hours these are outstanding on the grill. Have not bought much other fresh meat because I come here for great smoked stuff, the rest I can get anywhere. Of course good meat is not cheap and they are so old school here that all you get is an adding machine tape of the prices, so it can be frustrating to those of us who are used to detailed cash register tapes. I make the pilgrimage out to Rockaway for great meats from Schwind’s about once a month, it’s worth the drive. I lived in Germany for several years and this is very much like stepping into a typical crowded little butcher’s shop over there. The woman(who I believe is the owner) will happily talk German with you if you like, but the guys, not so much. Go early, take a number and try not to eat all the pretzels on the way home!

I was getting an oil change at the Jiffy down 46 from here when my Lunch bell rang way over due to eat. I walked the half block or so to Schwind’s to grab some cold cuts for some sandwich making and hopefully something to tide me over. I could smell the sweet scent of cold cuts being lovingly smoked out in back as I headed westward toward the store. I wasn’t going to make it home without eating. Thankfully there were some lovely sweet potato pancakes piled up on a tray for sale on the deli counter too. They didn’t even make it back to the car. They were awesome cold, I wonder what they are like hot. I may find out some day. Cold cuts were great when i finally got to my sandwich by the way. they have lots of interesting German specialty items too.

Although I spent a year living in Stuttgart, I’ve never been into wursts or cold cuts. However, the quality here is so exceptional that I frequently partake. In particular, the weissvurst is exquistely delicate and wonderful. For any foodie I would put this place on the essential list. Be prepared for a long line on Saturday mornings.
