Came to visit a friend and decided to give this place a try. We came without giving it much high expectations due to Asian food in an area not where there isn’t much Asians. In other words, I would b surprised to find super yummy, authentic and fresh comfort food or Mediterranean in a more asian saturated area, likewise. Our friend did mention that to us that we can not compare this back to Cali. I ordered a Combo Dinner Unagi Bento Box. Im guessing not a lot of people order this dish or come eat here much as their food was NOT fresh at all! The fried tempura was probably the only thing good because its fried. The siu mai and dumpling was generic/premade but ok and don’t mind it. The salad it came with was ok. The miso soup was good. The chicken was the worse! I couldn’t even eat it. It was SO rubbery I couldn’t eat it. Its probably due to too much starch/baking soda to preserve the chicken to store longer. Has it similar at a chain fast food before and its really bad. The teriyaki sauce was also swimming in more like the tempura sauce the the traditional thicker teriyaki sauce. So i literally left the chicken behind. Surprisingly the sushi rolls are ok. Edible but quality wise, very poor. In comparison, reminds me of no different than those at an AYCE chinese buffet place that serves sushi. The unagi was also not fresh and was dry/firm with a slight taste of freezer burn to it. Rather than soft and fatty like it should be. We ordered spider roll, mexican roll and sashimi platter. They were ok and presentation was good. But for the price they charge for the kind of quality and not so fresh fish, that is quite outrageous. Sashimi platter, 2 plates of rolls, combo dinner bento box and a side of tempura cost us $ 80! Service was great I do have to say. The lady who served us was very nice and always made sure our water was filled and cleaned out our plates when they were empty. Place was clean too. So for service, clean place and i guess descent sushi with a good presentation for the area, i gave it a 2 star. So if you really do choose to eat here, play it safer and go with the rolls and sashimi which are ok, just super expensive for that kind of quality and do NOT order stuff from the regular menu items. Except fried stuff like tempura.

Amazing food and service. Hibachi, sushi, and hot pot options all in one place. The sushi(and all the rest of the food) is very fresh and likely some of the best I’ve had. The space had hibachi tables, regular dining tables, booths, and a large private screened area for large groups or private parties. Also, tea is free!

We have been going to the Tokyo for years, both for personal meals and business associates, including bringing folks from San Francisco and Europe along for dinner. The Tokyo has two dining rooms, once for Hibachi and a traditional dining room. The traditional dining room has one section with a low table and the rest are standard tables. The food is outstanding, including fresh sushi, bento dinners, hibachi, etc. with a wide selection of proteins and other meal choices. Today we took my mother-in-law to the Tokyo for Mother’s Day. This was her first time to a Japanese place. She loved it! The Seafood Teriyaki dish was outstanding. She also raved about how great the service was. This is a huge win because this is far outside her regular comfort zone. The Tokyo is easily the best Japanese Restaurant in the Rochester area. I highly recommend trying it.

Took my wife there for dinner, and I was expecting a good experience based on other reviews. We got there and it wasn’t very busy at the restaurant. However we waited 25 minutes without any service to speak of. After we were seated, the waitress never came by our table. She didn’t come to bring us water or to tell us they had an unusual issue at the restaurant. She just served other Asians, but not us. It became so unsettling that we did something we haven’t done in 10 years. We just to got up and left. This place is mismanaged at best, and perhaps run by racist.

We have been here many times before. The portions are huge but the service was eh. The sushi was very creative and delicious. Prices were good.

Stopped here with a few friends for dinner and this place is good for the price. Portion size is decent and chef and service was good as well. Worth trying out and deciding. Place is a bit dated but you can’t judge without trying their food.

Stopped in for a quick lunch on a weekday. I ordered a Benton special, and it was a lot more food than I was expecting. I also ordered a spicy tuna roll(completely unaware of how much food was included in the Benton box), and it was also delicious. Overall, the food was fresh, prompt, and I cannot rave enough about the price of the lunch specials(about $ 8). This will definitely be added to my weekday lunch rotation.

My friends and I went here for my birthday this past year, and while the hibachi was great and the chef was very talented, his crude humor completely put a damper on the experience. He was making horribly inappropriate sexual and racist jokes the entire time he was cooking. When none of us were really responding or laughing at his crass jokes he commented on our lack of enthusiasm and then proceeded to ramp UP the amount of joking to include jokes about his father raping his mother, as well as calling my Saudi friend who had joined us a terrorist and saying he probably brought a bomb to dinner, among other things. It was really unfortunate that a fun, tasty hibachi experience quickly became unbearably uncomfortable due to this extremely inappropriate behavior. The rest of the staff was very friendly, and from looking around during the meal it seemed to me that this insane behavior was unique to our chef only. I would never recommend going there or consider returning unless that particular hibachi chef has left or stopped his extremely offensive behavior.

Had a small surprise party for my mother here. We had the most amazing time! All of the staff were super friendly and attentive. The food was good. I give it 5 stars based on the overall experience. I can’t thank them enough for making my mom’s night so special.

I had heard tons of good things about this sushi restaurant, and had finally given it a try. This is a review for just the sushi bar, I did not try the hibachi or restaurant portion of Tokyo Japanese. The quality of sushi was good, and the chefs were excellent and engaging. To me there just wasnt that many options on the menu for such a large establishment. Though this shouldn’t mean much if the quality is right, but to me there wasn’t much above and beyond the standard rolls and options. They were also a bit more on the pricey side. I also understand that we came closer to the end of dinner hours(730ish) but we did feel a bit rushed by the waitresses and the chefs. It was clear that they were waiting for us to leave to go home for the night. Other than that, the facilities were clean and the patrons were friendly. I think that for the money there are some better options for sushi in the Rochester area, but if you are Henrietta, it is a solid choice for some decent sushi.

Hands down one of the best dining experience! We’ve gone before and have always enjoyed ourselves. Once we sat at the sushi bar, literally right at closing, but they were still courteous and happy to serve us. The man preparing the sushi was friendly and we had a great conversation. We went in October(’15) for my birthday and they made it spectacular. The waitress is always very accommodating and let our party of three sit at hibachi even though I just wanted sushi(the other 2 got hibachi) and was kind enough to bring me a salad and soup so I wasn’t left out. We love getting their alcoholic beverages in the novelty take home glasses and they are kind enough to clean them before you leave. My friend slyly told the waitress is was my birthday and at the end of dinner I was surprised with desert, a song(with the gong), desert for the whole table, and a gifted set of chopsticks. It was wonderful, and it was much more authentic than your average Applebee’s wait staff singing to you. It was such a wonderful time and I always recommend this hibachi restaurant out of any in Rochester. Oh and the food was amazing, as always.

I came here with a group of 10 for hibachi and sushi. Overall, it was a pretty average dinner. I wasn’t crazy about the sushi, but it was ok. Same with the hibachi. They were on top of all of our orders, which was great with such a big group. Also, they split the check exactly as we asked and there weren’t any mistakes.

My favorite place by far! Sushi is great and so is the staff. Sashimi is always fresh and the kitchen entrees are delicious. Excellent sake whether it’s the house or a specialty one. Great for parties and kids with the hibachi, always entertaining. Items can also be ordered to eat in from the Shanghai restaurant next door. Hibachi gets busy often on weekends may want to make a reservation.

A decent Japanese place. Okay sushi but a little expensive but that is expected from sushi. I had the ebi tempura udon which was up to par. One other time did a habachi with my girlfriend. Dont do the habachi. It is just a show. Not worth the price at all.

Excellent ambience. Lovely staff. Delicious food. We tried the spicy roll and the chef was kind enough to modify it to a spicy crunchy roll and it was a 10⁄10. Our main course was the teriyaki chicken. Beautiful sizzling platter with a nice blend of vegetables and charbroiled chicken in teriyaki sauce. For dessert we had the fried cheesecake, a must try delicacy. Overall it was wonderful experience. Will definitely go back for their authentic hibachi experience.

Tokyo Japanese Restaurant definitely feels like an old friend. It’s been around for at least as long as I’ve been in Rochester(2002), and whenever I was in the area and didn’t know much about food or restaurants, it always welcomed me with warm open arms when I needed my sushi or hibachi fix. It was there when RIT froze over, it was there when winds were greater than 40 mph and we were told to stay inside, and it still continues to be there for me even today. After coming and going over the course of many years now, I’ve certainly learned there are far better places in town that may season their food a little bit better or be a little bit modern with their food offerings, but Tokyo will always hold a special place in my heart. I can think of countless birthdays or parties spent here at the hibachi grill where the wait staff and service treated us graciously where the food was just average, but tasted so much better because of the company I was with and the fun times that were had. So I guess what I’m saying is this — you may not have the best bite in town here, but you’ll have a place that will stick with you for years to come. It’s definitely not the best food, but it’s also far from the worst. It’s consistent, friendly, never out of stock of anything, and before you know it, you’ll realize you’ll have been going here for over 10 years. So here’s to another 10, Tokyo! I’ll be seeing you again soon I’m sure.

Always a great experience. I live minutes away, and I never thought a place called«Tokyo» would be any good due to the highly cliché name and appearance. Boy was I wrong. This is one of my favourite restaurants up to today. I’ve been here countless number of times, and pretty much know the entire staff by now. Everyone is kind and always in a cheerful mood once you’ve arrived. I’ve also had many of their dishes, from the nigiri, rolls, noodles, hibachi, teriyaki and bento boxes etc. If I could choose my favourite roll from this place, hands down it’s the Dragon Roll. Beautifully made and presented. It really beats any Dragon Roll I’ve had anywhere else. Don’t let me do the talking, have my pictures and hopefully your own experience speak for itself. Cheers!

Started eating Sushi in the early 80’s at Fuji Ya on Monroe Pittsford. By the early 90’s I moved to Tokyo Japenese. For years it was my favorite Sushi restaurant but slowly the restaurant started to drop. About 6 – 10 years ago I finally left, the service quality dropped and more so the building itself looked like it was falling apart. I would not be surprised if the ceiling still has the damaged water stains in the Sushi side. I did go to Tokyo on December 25th of this past year. This time we had Hibachi. Price was low, I ordered Salmon and I received enough for 2 people. Even with all the price saving I will probably not come back. The restaurant almost seemed dirty. Of course all restaurants need to make you feel comfortable about the cleanliness but multiply that by 10 when eating raw fish.

Summary: Tokyo Restaurant is a sit-down Japanese restaurant that has a variety of traditional Japanese foods including Sushi, Hibachi, Noodles, and Meat dishes. Price: Pretty reasonable. You can get most entrees for $ 10-$ 20, and appetizers and sushi are about $ 4. Not sure about the alcohol prices as I’m forever dry and didn’t notice. Taste: I started coming here in 2010 because they were one of a few places that had ramen. I lived in actual Tokyo Japan for a few months and are ramen weekly, and really missed it stateside. While I think the actual texture of the noodle changed for the worse here in 2011ish, the broth, pork, and eggs in the Shoyu ramen are still good. Compared to actual ramen in Japan, I’d give it a 3/5, but in Rochester it’s pretty good. The gyoza is the best I’ve had in the states hands-down. I’ve also had the Katsudon, Shrimp Tempura, and Chicken Katsu Curry here, and they were all good. Same basic idea with the Japan vs. Rochester scaling. Everyone I’ve ever went with including my fiancée and a few coworkers has enjoyed it here. (I can’t speak for the sushi, and to be honest, I don’t normally vouch for Sushi at a non-dedicated Sushi place. Places like Tokyo Restaurant in my opinion are meant to be more traditional style entrees, and while Sushi is traditional, in Japan there are often just places that sell Sushi exclusively. While those don’t exist in the states, I have sort of grown used to the thought that places that just happen to have Sushi as a side thought probably aren’t that stellar. But one of my dining companions had it here and enjoyed it, so I can’t judge.) Atmosphere: They try to make it look like a Japanese restaurant, and honestly besides the slightly gimmicky water display at the front, it’s pretty accurate. I ate at a lot of little food establishments in Japan and the interior at Tokyo Restaurant isn’t offensively different. Also, the servers have gotten to know me and know exactly what I want when I come in, and never fail to point it out when I’m there with other people.(They are Chinese as people have pointed out, but the Sushi chef is Japanese, and really, as long as chefs can prepare good food, who cares?) They’re all nice and for the most part attentive. I have had a few isolated situations where I didn’t get water refills as frequently as I would have liked, but it’s a minor complaint. Overall: Although the actual noodle in the ramen noodle dish changed(in my opinion to a more Western noodle), I still really like it here. My dining companions have always liked it and of the 4 or 5 different menu items I’ve tried, I think it’s pretty good for Rochester. I’m comfortable with giving Tokyo Restaurant 4 Stars.
