JC Penny’s… still going! With Sears withering on the vine(see ), you have to wonder what’s «in store» for JC Penny’s. At least the retail stalwart has some fashion sense. We stop by here all the time, it’s a well kept store and has kept up with the times. Hopefully, with the inclusion of Dave & Buster’s @ Marketplace Mall, the traffic will improve there. However, with the recent closing of the Gap among other stores, it doesn’t bode well.

JCPenney seems to be a dying department store, getting lost among the new wave of young adults wanting a more worthwhile experience. On the other hand, JCPenney still manages to maintain a solid ground, providing a good amount of clothing and accessories to men and women of all ages. This is where this store falls under as it’s not overly exciting or a «must» to visit but it’s still there to satisfy the majority of shoppers who just want nice clothing at average prices. They have a good selection of clothes to be found in this store including the most loved clearance racks where you can browse many unique items that have simply been discounted because they are out of season. You can spend a good amount of time here just looking and even if you don’t walk out with anything, there is plenty to choose from. The store is divided up alright and it’s kept relatively neat and clean even though there is the occasional misplaced item on the ground every now and then. On a whole though, the upkeep by the employees is handled well and helps create a pleasant atmosphere for the store. Customer service can be a chore depending on which person you get. Some of these employees are likely to give you attitude for no apparent reason but even with that, they do make sure that your needs are satisfied. The helpfulness and the attentiveness are there so even if you feel like they aren’t giving you the amount of attention you need, they are doing their best. Fair service overall and I haven’t been disappointed by any of them but your results may vary. It’s a good mix of suburban style chic and middle class fashions that are likely to appeal to the«suburban» families around here. This store still feels to be lacking a bit in some areas but overall, it’s a good destination for a quick shopping trip and compared to the other department stores in the mall, this is one of the better ones.

JCPenny used to be the place to shop for all your clothing needs, but it’s hard to compete with Target, Old Navy and all the other stores out there. Where I usually shop too. With that being said I was in there today to pick up an online order that offered free shipping to the store as well as a great clearance price. I walked in looking for the customer service desk/area to pick up my order, after a few minutes of wandering around I found a employee who directed me upstairs to the towel section. that apparently doubles as the online pick up station. There was a long line here for only two cashiers, I was #7 in line… they could use more cashiers in this store. Once I made it to the cashier they located my online order somewhere in the back room and they allowed me to use a online coupon I found on my smart phone while I was waiting in line. The coupon was good for 15% off the entire order. Overall experience was just ok, they didn’t seem to have a large selection of items from what I had noticed. But the big tip here is look online for extra coupons to use on your order!

I shopped at the JC Penney at Marketplace Mall yesterday. Every worker that I came in contact with was either miserable, not smiling, or talking crap about another employee. I understand how crappy it is to work the day after a holiday but you are in the customer service business be greatful you have a job! So I went to check out, and the cashier didn’t even greet me or anything she continued to carry on her conversation she was having with another employee, I questioned her about the price of 1 item and she acted like it was a big deal to look at it letting out a sigh and rolling her eyes. Definitely don’t won’t return here again if ever.

Hated when they took them away for a while.

JCPenny has been the store I would recommend but I rarely shop. I like it when I’m there, but I hardly ever buy anything. The styles are never bad, just not often spot on for me. When my wardrobe consisted of business casual attire, I stuck to the specialty like The Limited and such, but I think this store would be a good alternative if you wanted something a tad more conservative. JCP has always been that store I will gladly shop with a friend in, but probably not go for myself. The children’s clothing tends to offer better prices than the actual Carter’s stores for the same products, but their house brand doesn’t beat Target. Of course, nothing really beats Target for kids clothes, but that is for another review. The selection is lacking if you’re picky, but the basics can usually be found at a decent price. I’ve only really walked through the men’s department looking for other departments(signage could be better), but I have picked up a few sweaters last Christmas as they caught my eye(price more so than style). Again, I didn’t dig through their entire selection, but a decent quality classic sweater can be readily found. The home department has recently received a re-vamp and I am in love. LOVE. I was looking for a few kitchen items, led hear by a Real Simple ad and a gift card. The displays are clean and modern, but not overly stark. The brands are separated into their own sections, which makes for finding matching items easy but not so easy to compare brands against each other. The spacious and organized racks keep the many small items from appearing cluttered. The«checkouts» are now just a hidden register and a spiffy app on the associates iPhone. This is a new concept, I think the idea is the employee can help you check out wherever you are, instead of lining up at a counter. There are a couple table counters, I’m guessing these would be used as a line when one might form. Maybe not the best idea for a busy period, but on a slow weekday afternoon, it was fine. The associate that helped me was THEFRIENDLIEST. I seriously want to shop this store again strictly on how wonderful this woman was. She was moderately knowledgable on the items, and genuinely interested in discussing them, french presses and toasters being the topic of conversation. The French Press selection was impressive, given this isn’t a gourmet coffee store. Multiple sizes in a couple different styles & brands. I was advised to «tour» the new furniture set ups after paying for my purchase. In awe, I wondered through the quiet and orderly rooms. The sofas were modern but inviting, the dining rooms were warm, even the rugs were enticing. Prices were about in the middle of Target and Pottery Barn. That seems appropriate, mainly because I’ve always felt Pottery Barn is slightly over priced for the quality, but also because this is a larger department store, not a specialty home store. In contrast with Target, JCP seems to be going for a more refined look and, in turn, offering a pricier selection. Not«pricey», just slightly higher priced. It might have been the thoughtful layouts, but I feel the higher prices are warranted. The style and quality is something I would want in my home. The selection isn’t overwhelming, if you are in the market this would be worth the 10 minutes it would take to browse through.

Warning, this review is narrowly tailored, and thus may not be of interest to you and you may not wish to waste your time reading it, too late. For what its worth, I pretty much only shop here for men’s tall tee shirts so that makes this post largely limited to me and twelve other guys in Roc-city, and possibly stretched to include maybe people buying extra tall tees for those same twelve guys. Unless of course you like wearing shirts really long. But anyway, I had read on the Internet that JCP was in one of many retailers in trouble after a less than stellar 2012, and holiday season. As I shop at JCP for basics, about three to four times a year, and usually on-line, I wanted to check the inventory and stock up if they were on the verge disappearing, or even down-sizing their stores or shrinking their inventory selection. The tees were not available on-line(which I took as ominous sign). Well, while the store was organized and clean, they were definitely low on inventory, and completely out of what I was looking for, so I took a moment to walk the floors. It appeared that not only were the shelves and tables not stocked up as is typical, but also that they were spacing out their racks and fixtures to take up more space on the floor.(i.e. that they had spread the inventory out upon less numbers of racks and fixtures and then removed the empty racks all together) To be fair, that, if it was done, is a typical retail move during inventory transition periods. To me though, it seems unusual to run out of men’s white tee shirts, in several size ranges, as this is not a seasonal item. Is this the end of JCP? or the end of this store?
