Love CSA! This is my 2nd year with Golden Earthworm & I’ve never been disappointed. Love that everything is organic. I do wish G.E. would promote veganism. Definitely recommend CSA for 6 months of affordable, farm fresh veggies!

In addition to our fall apple-picking tradition, we have recently expanded to summer strawberry-picking. Golden Earthworm Farm is a small, quaint little farm way out in Riverhead. The strawberry fields are small, but they are more than adequate for picking. The last couple times we’ve been there, the place has been overrun by groups who bring their entire extended family and then proceed to divide and conquer, clearing out entire rows of bushes. Nonetheless, the fields are plentiful and we’ve always managed to fill our quarts easily. Hats are a MUST, as there is absolutely no shade and you will be hunched over, picking berries in the blazing sunshine. Shoes that cover your toes are a good idea too. However, sunglasses are not advised. Why? Because the tinted glass means you can’t see the true color of the strawberries, which is how you determine ripeness. Don’t mistakenly take home a bunch of unripe berries! The charming barn gift shop also sells some treats and bunches of fresh vegetables. And if you’re looking for a lunch spot afterwards, Meeting House Creek Inn is just around the corner!

They make weekly deliveries to sites on Long Island. It’s a veggie CSA(Community Supported Agriculture) share — we all buy a piece of the harvest before they grow it. If they have a good year, we have a good year. If they have a bad crop, we get less. But for $ 20 a week, which is a great deal for organic produce, you get all sorts of veggies. Plus they have recipes on the web site to use them all. I bought two fruit shares as well which are non-organic but REALLY fresh. July through mid-August: Blueberries, Raspberries, Blackberries Gooseberries End of July through mid-September: Peaches August: Nectarines September through November: Apples & Pears Yummy. Some delivery sites on Long Island still have openings —
Manhasset got sold out quick, I’m glad I got in early.

This review is a bit late, but for those of you planning on going strawberry picking in Long Island — this is the place to be. The farm itself is not super huge or anything, but there are enough healthy strawberry plants to pick from. While we were there earlier this year, there were at least 2 dozen families at the same time, and no one was unhappy or went home empty handed. They are kid friendly, and also have a small farm stand where their sell organic vegetables. We picked up some beets from there and they were AMAZING. As for the strawberries, some of the plants were a bit sour, but there were plenty of plants that were super sweet. And we picked from those plants and filled quite a few quarts to being back home. There is nothing like eating a sun warmed strawberry straight form the plant! A must go next year!

Organic produce grown in situ — tomatoes, onions, arugula, garlic, cucumbers, etc. Sold in the front room of a lovely barn. Prices were reasonable. The shopkeeper was helpful. I look forward to next year’s strawberry crop because this year’s is already done for the season. Sheep grazing the field nearby. Hours are not very convenient. 10 – 6 on Friday and 9 – 5 on Saturday.

I love this place for their organic strawberry field! It’s not a big field but it’s got enough strawberries for you to pick. Strawberry season is during the month of June and you can find the open-close hours on their website. They are usually open for picking on Friday-Sunday during the month of June. There’s no entrance fee and each quart is $ 4.50. They have two separate fields you can choose to pick from or you can go to both. Buy the quart at the little cabin and you’re set to pick away! The little cabin also sells veggies. The strawberries taste delicious! Probably the best strawberries I’ve ever had! They’re not sour at all and has the perfect amount of sweetness to them. Organic is the way to go.

i *heart* Golden Earthworm organic farm! We stay on LI each summer for a month and feel we are spoiled with the fresh organic produce we have in the Pacific Northwest. We were on the hunt for a fun activity for our toddler — found Golden Earthworm for their organic strawberry picking, which seems to be available 2 weekends in June. the strawberry picking was great! seemed like a small field but there were tons of juicy ripe organic strawberries waiting to be picked. But we were most excited about their greens! they were the freshest healthiest greens i’ve seen on the east coast! being mostly on a raw diet, i eat TONS of kale and i have to say this was one of the best heads of kale i’ve ever had. they had red romaine, thick juicy spinach leaves and huge white radishes. my partner was thrilled with their homemade strawberry bar that was there at the farmstand, rich and buttery with fresh strawberries for only $ 1.60. i would DEFINITELY be part of their CSA if i was a resident of LI.
