Few days ago I went to this restaurant, Caribe Star. I normally go to Rico Pollo, but they closed, probably for renovation. I’ve been to Caribe Star just one time before, and although I did not like it much the first time, I thought that couple years later they would be better. I went to get food for six people. I must say that I am Dominican and I kind of know Dominican food well. I got a few things: Rotisserie chicken, carne de res guisada(stewed beef), chivo guisado(stewed goat), stew chicken, red beans, white rice, arroz con gandules, and much more. As recommended by the lady on the cash register, I also got sweet beans(a dominican specialty), flan, gelatin and more. The food was terrible. The Rotisserie chicken was probably one or two days old and tasted very, very bad. The other food had no flavor and the sweet beans were definitely old. Although the place was not busy, the ladies in the front were taking forever to serve me. Sure they were nice, but I went there for the food. I gave this place one star because there is no zero star. I will never recommend this place and I will never, ever go back there. They lost a client forever just because they wanted to save some money by not dumping old food.

Place looks like any other diner. Staff was pleasant and we got the food pretty fast. Fried calamari were terrible, too hard. Pork chops in garlic sauce were ok but deep fried pork chops were much better definitely must take with rice and beans. Overall experience was not bad however i do not think i will be dining there again.

The food was undercooked and overpriced. The service was horrible and the restaurant had a horrible smell.

Came here on Father’s Day with my boyfriend and his two boys… This is the first time I had ever eaten at this restaurant and I don’t know if it was the holiday or if their general rule is to keep customers waiting for extended periods of time, but the wait to get something as simple as eggs and bacon was outrageous. We came at around 11am and literally all ordered four plates of eggs and bacon and it took an hour and a half to be served. The place was crowded and they seem to be understaffed. The people at the table next to us had a party of about 12 and had been waiting for almost 2.5 hours to be served by the time that they gave up and walked out of the restaurant. Only some of them have gotten to eat while others food had not yet arrived. It got so bad that we spent about half the time we waited joking about how they must’ve driven out to the farm to pick the eggs and slaughter the pig for our bacon. The only good that came out of this restaurant was that we had some good laughs at the expense of our stomachs. We won’t be returning.

Over the years this restaurant has gone through so many name changes, owners and staff, but the food still remains the same. Which is good for me because I happen to like their food. Their fried pork chops are made just right, the shrimp, chicken, and chicharron Mofongo is amazingly good, their rice and beans are delicious and their grilled chicken is super good.

Caribe Star is a hidden gem of Ridgewood. Settled on the corner of Myrtle Ave and St Nicholas street, this family owned and run restaurant has delicious Latin American food, friendly, accommodating staff, and a relaxed atmosphere. I went with the owners suggestion and had their passion fruit juice along with three different empanadas to start. The passion fruit juice tastes like you’re on the beach. I highly recommend it! The queso empanada was my personal favorite, but I also recommend the shrimp. The tres leche is scrumptious.(can never go wrong with that) For lunch there is a full buffet, perfect for a quick meal on the go or a sit down lunch. They also play a perfect mix of eclectic music while you dine. Looking forward to the next time I visit Brooklyn to stop by!

I didn’t want to spend too much time studying the lengthy menu, since the L train was scheduled to go all«L train is out of service, passengers looking for Manhattan take a bus to Maspeth and hitchhike.» So when I saw pernil mofongo was available I read no further. It was good, especially with the sauce added, although it wasn’t as garlic-filled as it could have been. I also got the sancocho soup which was o.k. Judging by the photo evidence, I might try the pork chop next time. The fried meat combo also seems like it could be a compelling once-a-year treat.

Years ago when this place reopened it was so delicious. The mofongo was only 5 bucks and tasty, grilled chicken was good and breakfast was good. Now the prices have gone up and quality down. I do like their breakfast but having one small strip of bacon and one small piece of so so sausage isn’t too appetizing. Sometimes their mofongo can be bland. The rest of their food could easily be beaten by other restaurants in the neighborhood or my mother’s own cooking. Rice and beans are okay, pernil can sometimes be dry. There are other great Spanish places in ridgewood like LA Flor de Paraiso on corneila st and myrtle ave that taste way better then here.

Their desayuño caribeño is what you need to have if you ever go for breakfast to this place. This place isn’t the cleanest restaurant in the area given that it’s rated a B but the food is always flavorful. I also love all their soups and pernil with tostones.

Want a diner looking restaurant that sells Dominican food? Yeah that’s basically this place’s gimmick. With so many spanish restaurants around we decide to come here because we like to be served and waited on and it looked pretty fancy compared to the smaller joints around. We went around 9 pm and there were a couple of people there eating and drinking. They have diner style booths and tables and a TV in the corners of the restaurant. Our table wasn’t properly cleaned before we sat down so that already threw me off. I ordered my standard broiled fish with white rice and beans. The boo had chicken in garlic sauce. Both of the entrees came in this weird gelatinous sauce that wasn’t tasty at all. My fish didn’t look broiled and the vegetables that came with it looked like they just fell out of a bag in the freezer aisle at the local supermarket. It was decent enough when I got down to it but not even close to the banging broiled fish in the Dominican spot closer to my house. His chicken didn’t have a lick of garlic and was so dry! After we were done the lady took some time getting around to us to give the check. I think I’ll trade in the glitz of a big restaurant for a small hole in the wall Spanish place that will probably taste 100x better.

Went with a friend and the first thing we noticed was an overwhelming dank smell. What he ordered came at least 20 minutes before my cheeseburger. He noticed it had been awhile and when I asked the waitress she snapped at me and said it was on its way. The burger and fries were completely inedible. I’ve had every variation of fast food in New York for 6 years. I’ve ordered cheeseburgers from Kennedy’s Fried Chicken at 4am and I’ve never had a burger this bad. The meat was overcooked and flavorless. Just a chunk of bland ground beef. The cheap bun crumbled away in my hands. It was obvious the staff didn’t care what I thought so I just paid and left without barely touching it.

Food is good, some items needs a little more flavor. Overall it’s a nice family style place. Their drinks are not so bad either.

I love this place because the plates are big, and the prices are low. I had roasted pork with broccoli and carrots for $ 7 and a strawberry shake for $ 3.50. The strawberry shake was sooo good. It tasted like stawberry Nesquik, and I slurped it down well before any of my food came out. My friend had a bacon cheesburger with fries for $ 6.25 and 3 egg and cheese empanadas for $ 5. The only down side is that it’s a $ 20 minimum if you want to use a credit card. But, still, I’ll definitely be back here if I happen to be in Ridgewood again.

I went here last night for dinner, and I was disappointed to say the least. To begin, the food was poorly prepared– and grossly abundant. My friend and I shared an avocado salad and, other than our beers, this was the best part of the meal. While it only consisted of shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato, and sliced avocado, the avocado was perfectly ripe, and hit the spot! However, when our main courses arrived, the quality quickly declined. I ordered the lemon chicken with a side of fries. The chicken itself was tasty enough, but was covered in grease. And the fries were soggy. My friend ordered the fish stew, and it seemed to be flavored almost entirely of bouillon cubes. And it was enough to feed four. Why anyone would want to pay three times the price of other area restaurants for a much lower quality is beyond me. I certainly don’t.

If you don’t eat meat then don’t eat here. The empanadas were very good. The chicken being the best and most filled with meat. I did like the shrimp and the cheese one as well. The chicharron mofongo was huge and contained nice pieces of pork and crispy skin. Very filling and glad I ordered it for only $ 7.00. My wife ordered the Pork Chops in garlic sauce. 2 big chops smothered in sauce which were great and full of flavor. One of the chops had alot of bone and grizzle but for $ 9.00 they were perfect. Ordered a homemade lemonade even though they had a full bar. Loved it! Place is very clean and service was very nice. I will be back to try other dishes for sure.

This place is the bomb-diggity! Basically its a local diner that serves Dominican-American comfort food. If you’re a vegetarian… well…let’s just say this place probably won’t be for you. It would’ve been nice, but let’s face it; I don’t think its menu caters to non meat eaters. If my memory serves me correctly, the boyfriend usually gets the onion pepper steak. My pick is usually the queso(cheese) monfongo along with a side order of plantains. I had the house wine, which was my least favorite part of the meal. Stick with the coffee, and you’ll do fine. Overall it’s a pretty solid place. Me and the boyfriend have already eaten here a few times. Never had a complaint about the service here. Both the waitresses and the cashier are friendly. By appearances it looks as if the owners are huge sports fans. Lining the walls are photographs of various sports players. The place itself is spacious, clean and comfortable. If you decide to get a window seat, at least you’ll get a nice view of the neighborhood. Within a convenient walking distance from the M/L train station.

Recently re-named Caribe Star, this is a diner(in a «real» diner structure) overlooking Myrtle Ave. The view itself from the booths is great for people-watching. Our waitress was friendly, and the space was clean and pleasant. COPS was on the television(muted, thankfully). As for the food? I’m guessing you’ll like it more if you aren’t a vegetarian. I got the queso mofongo which is *close* to being vegetarian… but pretty dry unless you put the decidedly animal-based broth on it as intended. The beans and rice were solid. My lady liked her ceviche. The flan was honestly the highlight of the meal for me. If you are a meat-eater, you’ll love it here, I think.

I like to roam, walking around my new neighborhood taking in the good and the bad. Just trying to adjust to my new life here in Brooklyn. While walking down Wycoff, we found the M and L train hub that is the Myrtle/Wycoff crossroads and were pleased to see so many local businesses and shopping. During our stroll at night, this diner was like a shining silver beacon in a sea of dullness. My husband and I both looked at each other and said, «We have to try this place!» If you cannot tell, we have been desperately searching for a diner within arms reach. And, Montas appeared to look just like a classic diner. However, once you enter, you realize that it is much more. As others have noted, this is a Domincan Diner, which just looks like a classic American diner from the outside, but has more to offer. The menu does offer some classic diner breakfast items, french fries, and hamburgers. But, you will see when you enter the front door and look to the right at the huge counter of roasted chickens and whole roasted pig that it is more of a Lechonera. After we ordered and were able to take the time to look around at what other customers were ordering, I realized that everyone had Mofongo in front of them. Which is something that I contemplated, but alas did not order. I come to find out that it is their specialty and one must order it. Next time! Most of the entrees are between $ 9.50-$ 34.00, ranging from beef and pork to more expensive seafood items like lobster. The portions are very large, and you will never be able to finish the entire meal with the side dishes included. On top of that, as soon as you are seated you are given a bread service of pressed and buttered toast. They also have mixed drinks and even Pina Colada Daiquiris. I tried the lemonade, which tasted like a mix even though there was some lemon pulp in the bottom of the glass. We had one cheese and one chicken empanada, with the chicken being the best. The chicken was hand pulled dark meat, which is always my favorite, even if you find a tiny bone or two inside. My fried pork chops were crispy and tough, to be expected, but they really hit the spot. My husbands sliced fish was full of bones and also had the skin on it, so after picking there was really not much fish there to be consumed. The rice was buttery, chewy, and cooked perfectly. There is only one choice of beans here, of the red variety, and they are so flavorful and full of porky goodness. The sweet plantains were abundant and the crispy, candied edges are my favorite. The waitresses here are not patient at all, and you will need to order without asking questions. My husband wanted the pork sandwich, with just pork and onions, the waitress just shook her head no. So all you high maitenence people, just be prepared for the menu«as-is.» Overall, we were fairly impressed, and the total for two was $ 28. I will definitely be back again for the Mofongo. The name has changed to Caribe Café, but they still have the same food, same menu, same employees.

Oh tradition stranglehold. The family and I always end up here after we get out new glasses from Sterling Optical. So at this point, we just kind of have to go here but don’t let my family’s oddball choice of tradition scare you off. We came here on a recommendation a few years ago and the breakfast is always tasty. Big servings at a decent price, great staff, and an interesting atmosphere. The breakfast is mostly American with a bit of Dominican flair to it so if you get an eggs with sausage platter, then you can bank on Spanish spices adorning your sausages. It’s great and always a little unexpected. If you’re not looking for breakfast, they do have their usual Dominican lineup whether you want it as a meal in store or you want it to go. I love their empanadas and they’ve got a few to choose from.
