My favorite Italian restaurant in Reno. I go the first night every time I visit for a little gambling fun over the weekend. Fast service. I recommend any pasta dish with shrimp. Deelish.
Sorry, it did not meet expectations. One couple ordered the three steak dinner. They asked for the Prime rib to be medium well, it came medium rare. The other two steaks were suppose to be medium, they were carbonized on the outside, rare in the middle. The other couple ordered prime rib. The well done end cut came medium, the medium well came as ordered. But for these two they got the potato order mixed up. Overall the cuts were kind of greasy. The French onion soup was OK but other than the cheese, not very hot. The room was well lit so if expecting a romantic steak house, forget it. Bread came but only after the soup arrived. Also had to ask for steak knives as they only gave us two to start. Bottom line, poor service, mediocre food and not really very fancy. Oh yeah, my wife mentioned her menu was dirty which put her off right from the start. We are not going back.

Ok, so the only reason I will come back here is for the FOOD. Pros: Awesome food a such a low price It’s in downtown– and not a crowded restaurant The bread sticks! OMG Cons: The food was slow, the waitress said something happened in the kitchen and that our appetizer and entrée would be out shortly, but to make it better she offered more bread sticks(YAY) and free ice cream for dessert. Our appetizer was some cheese dip stuff with little mini bread pieces, we killed the bread pieces but still had more than half the dip(and this is seriously with loading it on), she told us she would have to charge us a dollar to bring out more of the mini bread pieces, but that she could bring out more bread sticks for free. LOL. This was after waiting 30 minutes for the appetizer as well. I’m pretty sure our waitress was on crack. Seriously, she looked and acted like it. And I’m pretty sure we where her only table and she would disappear for 10 minutes at a time. And when we finally did get our free ice cream she has me to grab one for her and when I went to reach for it she dropped all the spoons on me. LOL But worth it for the food:)

As the casinos created the 99 cent breakfast, the CalNeva has extended the concept to Italian. Despite the wallpaper, table cloths, and tile creating a faux sense of being in a villa in the countryside, the food is hearty, the service friendly and generally attentive, and the value unbeatable. I’m a «meat and potatoes» guy when eating Italian, which means I rarely venture beyond the minestrone and pasta marinara. While neither offering here was the best I’ve eaten, both were good, worth returning for another helping. Interestingly, the restaurant offers a smaller portion of pasta, which is still quite substantial. Warm bread sticks — which will remind you of Olive Garden — accompany the meal. The value extends to the carafe of Chianti I ordered. It tastes more fruity than I prefer, yet was a respectable accompaniment to the pasta. If you’re seeking Italian comfort food for a more-than-reasonable price, The Pasta Shoppe — now called the Steak and Pasta House — is worth a visit.

Service slow. I think under staffed. Alfredo dipping sause was a little bland and chunky. We shared a large build you own pasta ravioli with ravioli and garlic pesto. Thought the ravioli had way too much ricotta cheese. Really did enjoy the pesto sauce that was pretty good.

Haven’t been here in a long while but here were my thoughts: Small little Italian restaurant at the Cal Nevada casino. Pros: –lots of room for a good dining experience –great service –great pricing –great food. it’s simple, it hits the spot when craving for spaghetti, minestrone soup(although Olive Garden’s is better) Cons: –cheap pricing for wine but tiny glass. better getting a half-carafe of wine for .50 cents more

We went here for lunch and left a reasonable tip and they had nerve to add more tip on my brothers credit card. I can see it from their side of it as I am a chef, but this is no way to treat any customer even if they leave no tip at all. This is STEALING!

Not bad. We split an appetizer, there was free bread, we each ordered a glass of wine and entrée. Came out to about $ 40 after tip. For Italian, not bad. Taste wise — Let’s just say it’s on par with the olive garden but cheaper than the OG. In the end, the taste is what is dragging the rating down. Ambiance isn’t bad but a light candle would be nice.

Perhaps, as other reviews suggest, this was once a good deal with lovingly prepared specials worthy of visiting over and over. Such is not the case now. This is a typical budget restaurant, offering bland food from freezers and cans served by befuddled and disinterested waitstaff. You get exactly what you pay for, which in my case was overcooked pasta topped by a flavorless approximation of alfredo, followed by dessert resembling spumoni in name only. The service was awful, from the unintelligible mumbling hostess to the misfiring frenetic waitress who let the eager-to-please busser do most of her job. The manager, Ron, is a down-to-earth straight shooter who likely would have offered us an incentive to go back, but there isn’t a thing in the living world that could entice me to revisit this testament to culinary complacence.

This is surely one of the least known good values in Reno. Rarely is it crowded, and while the atmosphere is not elegant, it is certainly cozy and comfortable. Whenever I have dined here, the clientele have been adults, so one is more likely to enjoy a quiet dinner. The prices simply can’t be beat, even for wine, and the quality is well above average. One of my Reno favorites by a wide margin.

– Budget Italian with champagne taste – This place is usually very friendly(one server is a douche) and the manager is awesome. Perhaps you wouldn’t think Cal Neva could have a quality Italian restaurant, but then you’d be mistaken. There’s no pomp about this place; it’s just lovingly prepared grub with free parking in the ramp. The menu is a sheet of paper and everyone has their own candle. Toothpicks are available on your way out, but you probably won’t need one, because pasta. Restrooms are conveniently located nearby, along with several pinball machines that may or may not work.

My wife and I found the Pasta Shoppe on Unilocal, tried it, and went back three more times in two weeks because it was great food at very affordable prices even without the two for one coupon we printed off online. The dishes are basic italian done very very well. I go for the specials usually as the chef obviously likes to mix it up. He even comes out to see how you are enjoying it on occasion. Other than the occasional poker tournament being advertised over the PA, you’d never know you were in a casino. The waitstaff are fun and friendly and never treat us badly for ordering cheap meals and water as we are on a student budget.

I was in the Cal-Neva recently. Husband and I tried this place and it is really good for the price. The dining area is peaceful and the décor is actually quaint. The pasta dishes were good, and at a great price. Nothing is very fancy, but if what you want is pasta with meat sauce, meatballs, lasagne, or other traditional pasta dishes, this hits the spot. Also, on a good note, I couldn’t smell any smoke inside the restaurant(the casino is pretty smokey in general). Waiters were friendly and actually were quite a crack up while doing a fine job.

One of downtown’s best kept secrets. It is very good food and downright cheap. Full meal with soup, salad, garlic bread, spagetti and meatballs for 5.95??? And its good! I would come back anytime to this little gem.

With a decent breakfast & lunch«rib cook-off buffet» for a Saturday 9÷5÷09, u’d prob think dinner isn’t necessary. Wrong folks! BF& I wanted to put sumthin’ in our tummies for din, so we tried a spot @ the hotel we were staying at… found ourselves @ The Pasta Shoppe
LOCATION: On 2nd floor of Club Cal Neva Casino Go to escalators by Casino Grill(located on 1st floor), & The Pasta Shoppe is directly at the top of escalators. CUSTSVC: Welcoming, friendly, polite, patient, & thorough =) Warmly greeted & seated immediately upon entrance. Not overwhelming in check-ups during meal. On top of the job w/water refills w/o having to ask *KUDOS* RESTAURANT: Hardly crowded honestly when BF& I arrived, but got a decent crowded once we finished around 9pm-ish Decent size restaurant that spacious, dim ceiling lights, candle lights per table, red-white checkered table cloth, 4-seater tables w/armless chairs, & plenty of booths. TASTESOFITALY: So we had no intentions of eating a whole lot, but both knew we should eat something for dinner. So we shared a Half Order Caesar Salad , I had Half Order of Lasagna , &BF had Half Order of Linguine w/Alfredo Sauce & Sausage Meals were good, hot, & tasty. Nothing over the top climax-good, but definitely satisfying =) DESSERTS: This part of din seemed to make us the most happiest on palette *tee-hee* I got the Tiramisu &BF got the Vanilla Ice Cream. BOTH of these desserts were flavorful, sweet, soft, & scrum-didly-umptous! Perfect way to end the day for us really. FINALTAB: Came out of pocket about $ 24 for HO-salad, 2 HO-entrees, 1 lemonade, &2 desserts *WOO-HOO*! This place is affordable, good food, good cust svc, & good location. Yeah, we’d prob come back & have no prob recommending this place too ;-)

This place shines out a bit from the rest of the Cal Neva. Yes, it’s still one of the dive-iest casinos in town, but this restaurant is solid. Best thing about this place is the price — the spaghetti dinner special is $ 5.95, and includes salad, minestrone, and spaghetti with meatballs. For this price, you don’t have much room to complain, but the salad was nice, with a mix of lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, and radish. The minestrone was good. I was expecting crappy, cafeteria style spaghetti at this price, but instead it was solid noodles, with a good sauce, and two big meatballs. Highly recommend the place if you’re looking for a cheap, solid meal.

I am impressed! On the top floor of the wonderfully divey Cal Neva is a treat. I went in by myself while my friends busied themselves gambling. I ordered a glass of BV cab, side salad, mozzarella sticks, mushroom ravioli with pesto and linguine with clam sauce.(My eyes were bigger than my stomach) The food was pretty damn good for being the cheapest food ever! Wine was 3.50, the salad was $ 2.95, the mozzarella sticks were around $ 3.50. The pastas were available in small or large plates(small 4.95 large 7.95.) Because I’m a greedy little piggy I decided on two small plates. Both were great. Everything was very tasty and I definitely wish I had one of these in Sacramento. This should be a mass chain. Oh yeah, carafes of cheap wine $ 3.95. That right there deserves two stars. And garlic bread is served with every meal. Freakin awesome.
