Staff is like family, food is always comforting with that necessary greasy edge, and it’s always happening in here. Thanks

This place hits home. It’s ‘Field of Dreams’ meets the DiNero-Pacino ‘Heat’ movie scene. Small portions, small booths, small town banter! The Red Hook Diner is on the National Historic Register as a railway car. Sit at the bar on old cushioned seats; pick desserts and breakfast from the shelves behind the counter. Outside small village Americana moves by. Red Hook’s Diner is ketchup, soda jerk, sweets and grease. Food here depends on dish, classics are best: BLT’s, burgers, sandwiches and don’t forget the best side(popular among students); the cheese and gravy smothered fries! Pop in without reserve, swing the door behind you. Talk with farmers and servicemen over coffee. Tight spaces, historic location, small plates. Watch the kitchen in back and leave with a smile.

Got in fairly quickly even though they were busy. Food came quickly and tasted great. Got the French toast sampler. Perfectly done.

Great homemade food, bustling, fun atmosphere. I had a simple diner lunch of a tuna sandwich with potato salad, but it was fresh and«real», rather than the run-of-the-mill diner slop. The kicker was the apple strudel that had to be locally baked by somebody’s grandma.

Very nice people, very cute diner! Don’t get the potatoes, eggs were a little cold. Coffee was very good. Hash browns were too! I’d go back.

Love all the food that I’ve had so far at the diner. My all time favorite is the Eggs Benedict… the best I’ve had at a diner.

We love trying new places whenever we travel; even if it’s in our own backyard(so to speak). On one of our last mornings, we stopped here. It’s just as you’d expect a diner to be. My Sausage, pepper, & onion mozzarella breakfast special with shredded potatoes was just what you’d think it would be. The meat wasn’t very spicy or sweet. There was an ample serving of peppers, onions, & cheese. The hashbrowns were also crispy, which I much prefer. The hot chocolate was just sweet enough and the whipped cream was good too. Hubby had the eggs benidict and said it was very tasty. The iced coffee was run of the mill, but good just the same.

Let me start by saying this is one of our favorite breakfast spots. Omelettes are always fantastic! We loved the service before all the girls left to work at the new diner. Anyway, Burgers are always great, salad bar is very good. My complaint is this, We stopped in for dinner last week. On the special board that the waitress tried to hold for us to read instead of hanging it up and letting us discuss our decisions, was meatloaf. I got excited about that. I love diner meatloaf. Well not this time! When it came out it was sliced thin, NOFLAVOR, they must have used a whole can of bread crumbs in about a pound of meat because it was so dry you could barley swallow the 2 bites I took. The gravy was Knorr from a can, lumpy, the mashed potatoes looked like someone painted them with satin paint. Must be boil in a bag. When I ordered this monstrosity the waitress said and I quote«Oh good decision, the meatloaf is fantastic tonight, I just tasted it when it came out of the oven» It was so upsetting, after the 2 bites I took I left. I left my poor husband in there to deal with it. Won’t be ordering the meatloaf again! I’ll stick to burgers and omelettes I guess!

I was up in Red Hook for business. A couple of co-workers and I wanted a nice, small-town, diner eating experience so we came here. From the outside, this was exactly what we were looking for. It was crowded and that usually means there is good food inside. Our experience was up and down. First of all, the woman took our drink order. I got un-sweet ice tea. After we got our drinks, of course the server ran off as she was busy. Well, there is no sweetener on the table. What kind of restaurant doesn’t have sweetener on the table? So when she came back to take our order, I had to ask for it. I felt like I was asking mommy for an allowance. She gave me one packet… so I had to ask for another one. My impression was that the owners were too cheap to put sweetener on the table for fear people would steal it. The salad bar is very good. A very nice mixture of tossed salad ingredients and a big variety of toppings and salad dressings. I would say for me, that the salad bar was the highlight of the meal. Two of us ordered the meatloaf and it obviously was not fresh. It was kind of dry and tasted like it was either frozen and thawed in a microwave, or was a couple of days old… like it was made earlier in the week and stored in the fridge. If not for the gravy, I would have sent it back for being too dry. This was unforgivable for me. A diner should have great meatloaf… period. For eleven dollars, I should not have a dry meatloaf. More ice tea, more doling out of sweetener. I should have ordered just water. The final insult was at the cash register. Who doesn’t take credit cards these days? I’m on a business lunch. I need a real receipt to submit for reimbursement. Not only did I have to pay cash, but I had to wait for the cashier to write out another full receipt. It was easy to see that she was tired of informing people of the no credit card policy, and she was frustrated by having to write out another receipt. Never going to go here again.

You can’t help but be enthralled by the character of the Village Diner. It’s almost as if you step inside a time capsule and experience a diner of the 1920s to 1960s. As a historian, I was tickled pink by the integrity of the interior and exterior of the diner and couldn’t help but looking at every single detail. Great ambiance, great character. The food is pretty typical diner food, enjoyed some great eggs, hash browns, and toast. Quick service and good food. In and out in about a half hour, with plenty of time to enjoy the space!

Old fashioned REAL diner. Burgers are great, breakfast is always good and the coffee is the best. Service is fast and the waitresses are friendly. Not going to knock your pants off with their culinary skills, but it’s darn good diner food!

A well-preserved streamlined diner in the heart of the village of Red Hook. I had a cup of meaty chili that was a bit mild for my taste, but red and green Tabasco on the table quickly fixed it up. The open face hot meatloaf sandwich had plenty of thick, delicious meat loaf, covered in homemade brown gravy. Dessert was a large slice of dense, moist chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. What’s not to like?

Five star, always good. Had a burger cooked medium, with crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, feta — really tasty. My father had a tasty, appetizing pastrami on grilled hard roll. Service is great, bottomless coffee, apparently. Waitresses really friendly with my dad. Very reasonable prices. Always a lively place.

Great food. They even have a mini salad bar!!! Love the nostalgia too. It’s always really busy so you might have to wait. I’ve never had a bad thing there. Our waitress was always fast and nice.

Looks like I’m not in with the rest of the crowd… Don’t get me wrong, you should still go as the food is definitely edible, and the ambiance is one of a kind, but the food is not as good as people have posted(just one guys opinion).

Best in class if you like the Diner-as-Experience, a real piece of living Americana. I won’t quibble about things like slow drink refills when I can spend the time savoring the classic interior. The food was excellent, menu a classic stripped-down American standard, but with the requisite number of comfort-food specials. And, seriously, eight different kinds of fruit pie to choose from for dessert(we opted for strawberry-rhubarb). Usually if you dine in a registered historic landmark, it’s the kind of hoity toity tie-and-three forks place where you have to «put on» as much as the restaurant does. But in the case of the Halfway Diner(aka the Historic Village Diner) you can just enjoy the grub, get called hon, and hope your great-grandchildren will be able to enjoy this place as much as your great-grandparents did.

When I did time in upstate new york(don’t get me wrong, it is beautiful up here but equally painful at times) this little diner was a regular stop for me at breakfast, lunch or for an early dinner. Its really old school which I love since when I was a teenager I used to frequent 50’s diners. THe food is very good and what they do here they do very well. My personal favorite thing here is breakfast. If its eggs, pancakes, hash that you love. Its all done perfect. There are a few of these gems in the hudson valley and I hope that they are all here to stay.

It’s fitting that there is a real historic dining car in an equally historic place like Red Hook which has been on the map for generations. The exterior is green and white and the interior is just plain charming. I stopped by one afternoon for a late light lunch ordering a cup of chicken orzo soup and a Pepsi after doing some genealogy work. The soup was good, the service was fast and friendly and now I can check off of my «to do» list that I ate at a true diner and not just some random greasy spoon with a counter along the side of a highway.
