My friend and I just wanted to get some quick brunch on the river so we stopped at Darkstar. We sat outside on the back patio which was a little run down and had a view of the dirty flooded river. This did not bother us much though since it was mostly out of their control. We ordered an omelette and biscuits and gravy. We weren’t in a hurry but started to get anxious when 25 minutes had passed and our food hadn’t come out yet. Right when we were about to ask if our order was coming out soon, our waitress assured us that it would be out in a few minutes. We then waited another 20 minutes until we finally asked the waitress about our food again. She then explained that there was a large group that had put in an order before us. This wouldn’t have upset us if the waitress had told us this when we first ordered our meals and not 45 minutes later. Our food finally came out 5 minutes later and the waitress told us she would comp our meal. Our meal was satisfactory. When we got our check the waitress had taken off the fee for my friends orange juice and my biscuits and gravy. I am grateful that she did give us a discount but the waitress made it seem like our whole meal was going to be compensated. Things happen and sometimes waits are inevitable but the waitress seemed more annoyed than sorry and was misleading. The food was fine but I probably will not go back or recommend to others.

We stopped here on a Saturday evening around 6:00 on our way home from a basketball game. While there were 6 – 8 people at the bar, there was no one sitting at any of the tables. I ordered a hamburger and fries and my husband had fish and chips. It took 45+ minutes to get our food and the hamburger was way overcooked. The fish and fries were fine. Plus, it was so cold in there that every single person was wearing their coat, including the bartender. I’d like to see DarkStar succeed but maybe not as a restaurant. Perhaps we’ll just stick to drinks at the bar.

Darkstar Tavern took me by surprise. It doesn’t look like much, the menu seems average at best, and the ambiance is nothing special. HOWEVER — don’t pay attention to any of that. Grab a COLD beer, order the amazing huge nachos to share, and grab a seat on the patio watching the small boats and canoes float down Harrods Creek. What makes Darkstar so awesome is it’s un-pretentiousness(so not a word) and it’s intent to be just what it is, a local dive. Other than the nachos I recommend the fish sandwich or grilled cheese(for real).
