Like other reviewers, I had my apprehensions about visiting Design Within Reach because of its high-end merchandise. However, once I mustered up the courage to walk into the store, I was made to feel in good company by a knowledgeable, pleasant, and non-judgmental saleswoman. I’d scoured central New Jersey for a Barcelona Chair to sit in and test out, and there was one right across from the saleswoman’s desk! It was divine, to say the least. And, with all the other notable furniture in the store, I felt as if I was in a please-touch museum. The employee and I had a little chat about Mies van der Rohe and mid-century designs, and she even let me peer over her shoulder onto her iMac as we looked at MVDR skyscrapers. Plus, she never tried to hustle me. In fact, once I mentioned that the chair was out of my budget, she gave me several options: wait for the September sale, sign up for the store’s email newsletter, and also check out the DWR Outlet in Secaucus, if I was ever up there. This is one time I wish I’d gotten the saleswoman’s name, because her friendliness was far beyond my expectation. Thanks to her, when I do finally buy the Barcelona Chair, it’ll be from Design Within Reach.

I didn’t buy anything here, as I was not looking for any new pieces and I’m pretty sure everything here is out of my price range, but I thought the woman working there was still pretty nice to let me and my boyfriend sit in the assorted chairs, pump the $ 119 soap dispenser(uh, I wish I had money to blow on that because it was magical) and take pictures of the back wall, which was covered in what I assumed were designer headshots. I don’t know, but it looked cool as hell. Fun place to window shop, look at pretty things and keep it moving.

This was the best customer service experience I have possibly ever had. I have, in the past, always shunned Design within reach because, price-wise, I’ve always thought of it as «Design Out of Reach.» My DESPERATION at the imminent arrival of a Certain Someone visiting me in my minimalist(read: barren) graduate student apartment, however, drew me inside. Would I find something to increase coziness-factor? My delight at discovering an extremely fluffy and inviting-looking lambskin rug ONSALE was intense, only for my hopes to be DASHED when I found they didnt have it in stock! This was when Meredith, the nicest salesperson I have ever encountered, came to the rescue. She recognized the gravity of the situation. Certain Someone was arriving at 10:30 am the next morning, a Saturday. Without going into the details of what transpired, I’ll just say that at 10:10 on Saturday morning, Meredith pulled up at my front door, with fluffy white piece of Designer Lamskin Heaven in hand! Design really was WITHINREACH! My reach, still in my bathrobe, that is. It was truly an amazing feat of customer service, and lets just say that the lambskin was, as we say in academia, the locus of much snuggling.
