Wooster’s

I was not expecting this little cart to be such a gem. I stumbled upon it while taking a stroll through my girlfriend’s family’s neighborhood. I got a cup of coffee (craving, can you blame me?) and my girlfriend got one of their cookies. Oh my goodness, the COOKIES! They are so amazing. I forget exactly what she had, but it was the perfect blend of all of these unexpected flavors and biting into it was like biting into a little piece of alternative-​southern heaven. Also, their lemonade is great, according to my girlfriend’s 11 year old cousin.
If you’re in the mood for southern hospitality and food, PLEASE give Wooster’s a try. Just writing this review is making me want to go back! :)

I ordered the open-​faced brisket sandwich ($ 8): two slices of bread, topped with smashed new potatoes, slow-​cooked beef and mushroom gravy. I received a nice portion for $ 8.
A generous portion of brisket here. It was decent overall. I liked the juicy shredded brisket, but I mainly had long, stringy shreds of meat that proved tough to cut or bite through. The sweetness from the cooked carrots worked well here, and the mushrooms added more welcome flavors. It had a simple comfort-​food style vibe, trying to take me to a happy place.
The smashed new potatoes were very enjoyable… creamy and colorful (it looked like there was some red cabbage and/​or scallion in there). However, it did seem like a bit of starch overload with smashed potatoes on top of two pieces of bread. Also, I would have liked the bread toasted a bit more to provide a more solid foundation for the dish.
Other great entrees at Wooster’s include the Country Fried Steak ($ 9; hand-​breaded sirloin and sausage gravy with one side); the Shrimp and Grits ($ 9; pan-​seared shrimp, andouille, and creamy polenta); and their bacon, egg, and cheese croissant (about $ 4 or $ 5). Side dishes include curly French fries, sauteed veggies, onion rings, smashed new potatoes, and black-​eyed peas.
If you’re craving some «original country soul food,» head on down to Wooster’s to get your food fix!

I love this cart! Finally tried it a few days ago and was not disappointed. I got the chicken fried steak with curly fries and a bacon maple cookie. The breading and gravy were perfect, and the cookie was awesome. I also really like that they accept credit/​debit cards. Very nice addition to the 52^nd/​Foster cart pod!

Wow, I tried this as a lark and was pleasantly surprised. Being a southerner, living in the NW, you do miss the food. This is without question the best southern style cooking I’ve had in Portland. The chicken fried steak is perfect. Nice texture, breading. They have the right amount of gravy (lots of other places miss this). The potato based sides are great. The curly fries are thinly cut and breaded with a light white batter I’ve not seen used outside of the south. The sweet potato chips are equally good and something unique being between a chip and a fry in size.
Yes, it’s on the fattening side of fattening and more salty than most people are used to, but you have to try it.
The cart also very clean. You can tell they care about keeping a clean, ordered space.
