I’m perplexed with the high ratings for this place. It’s a dump and the food is marginal at best. If there something less than one star, I’d give it.

Had a quick bite here and was not disappointed. While they do not have a ton of options I was very happy with my tofu stir fry which came with yummy cole slaw. The husband had their seafood combo, which I think is what most people have. The atmosphere is quite adorable(it really is a hut!) and there are plenty of cozy options for seating.

I really hate to give bad reviews to local shops, but this place is definitely asking for it. Despite a sign saying Now We Are Cooking by the front door, my experiences here proved the opposite is true, I am afraid. Came here twice. The first time, the owner served my food. He was chatty and pleasant, going off about the Beavs and all. The food was, interesting. I had Carlton Pulled Pork. It tasted like it had been previously cooked, kept in the fridge uncovered and reheated in a microwave right before serving. I suppose if one is going to do that, the least one can do is to keep the food tightly covered inside the fridge, so the flavor does not change as it is being kept cold, but no luck here. Still, I was willing to give it a second chance, but this time, I had something else. A teenager was manning the shop and I noticed this time that indeed the food was kept in a fridge under the counter, where it was pulled out from right before nuking. I can’t remember what I had, it was so regrettable. So there you have it. I am pretty darned picky about my food, and I assume you are too about yours. Hence, I certainly cannot recommend this place in good conscience, much as I would like to, particularly since the food here is advertised as freshly cooked by the sign outside the door when in reality it just isn’t.

Village hut is great! The food is great and does seem to be healthy! I live nearby and have come here many times for the chicken and once for salmon(great!) :). This time I got the seared tuna, minus the searing! That’s right their tuna is high enough quality to eat totally raw! It was delicious! Great texture! No fat! Wooo village hut! I literally got Unilocal to write this review! These guys are great, very friendly and have built the quirkiest extended indoor outdoor hut structure that I love hanging out in! Also I appreciate that they wait until you are leaving to pay, they trust that you won’t run off out of one of the sidewalk accessible hut exits, and that you account for the drinks that you grab from the fridge

What a fabulous find! The owner/chef buys fresh every day. My friend and I got the same dish, a mixed seafood dish of coho, salmon and shrimp served over jasmine rice(brown rice also an option). It was served with a house-made Thai sauce. Two lagers, two wines, two meals — $ 50. Amazing! It’s a tiny restaurant, and it is a bit of a hut! It wasn’t crowded when we arrived at around 7 pm. Compact, no frills, no attitude… just amazing, fresh, chef-quality food!

Always a friendly and delicious time, with amazing fresh fish options. Might not be ideal for dine-in lunch on a hot day, then you get takeout.

You need to be in the mood for non traditional seating. It has the vibe of a BBQ joint in Texas Cool, funky place. Looks very much like an agricultural outbuilding. Very cute weird little local place. The food is a selection of rice bowls made with mostly-locally sourced meats and seafood. I had their seafood combo, which was quite good. wife had BBQed tri tip and liked it. kids had pork, also BBQed. I sampled everything and I liked it all. A decent go to place. Especially if you’re in the ‘hood and hungry.

Stopped in for lunch. Place is funky and small. Ordered seafood combo — salmon, shrimp and halibut on a bed of rice, plus coleslaw and small piece of watermelon. $ 14. Food was delicious, fresh, and hit the spot. Proportions were not huge, but for the price it was ok. I will definitely go back for the seafood and also to try some of the other items on the menu(ribs, chicken).

The owner is friendly and prides himself in using fresh and local ingredients. I had the fish of the day with veggies and rice. All were cooked perfectly and I appreciated the minimal seasoning on the very fresh fish. I will definitely be going back!

What a cute awesome little place. Lots of sitting areas indoors and out. Had a lovely Columbia sockeye bento box. Perfect portion for me, though some might like more – it was truly healthy. Tasty veggies(I would have liked more of those and less of the rice), friendly owner/chef, a nice chewy short grain brown rice. I’m sort of torn on the stars, because of how others read this stuff. It’s simple food done nicely, and on that scale, I’d probably give it another half star. Give it a try, you’ll enjoy the food and the vibe.

Delicious, healthy food. The owner is awesome. We had such a nice night eating in their fireplace nook and even felt great after our dinner out because of the wholesome food.

Village Hut, oh how I wish I knew about you long ago. Everything is fresh and expertly prepared. These are gourmet, healthy bentos. If you’re looking for a heavy, teriyaki bowl, Village Hut is not for you. Daily there is a choice of chicken, or pork. There are 5 + daily specials depending on what the owner gets from the market that morning. Great fresh seafood options, and meat options like filet mignon, or lamb. The proteins are grilled, and served over a bed of Jasmine, or Brown Rice. There is a fantastic Asian slaw on the side, and some fruit for desert. The owner is super friendly. The menu changes daily, so there is no menu listed online. Call in for the daily specials :).

The positive reviews here are baffling… I was warned by countless people not to ever go to the Village Hut because it was, in their words, «literally the worst food in Portland!» but I’m not that much of a food snob and thought people were simply exaggerating… boy was I wrong! First, it is a cute place, and walking distance to where I live, so I was actually excited about this. When I went in, it was not crowded, only one person there, a friend of the owner, and the owner himself behind the counter. I ordered the Wild Alaskan Salmon bento with brown rice. The first warning sign should have been when I saw him take out the frozen piece of a salmon and take it into the back patio, where they have the microwave! After about 10 minutes he then asked again, «what kind of rice, white or brown?» I said brown and he whipped that up in 60 seconds, threw the microwaved salmon — that was«cooked» barely to room temperature and completely dried out — on with two rotten apple wedges and a dash of flavorless cole slaw… Worst food I’ve EVER had in Portland! Seriously. Having to give it at least one star is more than the Village Hut deserves… Portland is supposed to be a foodie town, so how anyone could make such dreadful microwaved crap here(and charge $ 14 for it!?) and still stay in business is beyond me, but I will never be going back to Village Hut again! And that makes me sad, as I was really hoping to find a cool little place within walking distance that I could enjoy. I should have heeded the warnings though, and SOSHOULDYOU!

I’ve been living in this country for 3 years, and«Village Hut» definitely gave me the worst food cart experience I have ever had! I spoke English slowly and politely to her, and the young blonde girl who working here speak to me with obvious disgust and angry face. After I said«for here please» to her, she said«go sit down!» just like she is training a dog! I ordered wild salmon plate. She didn’t cook the salmon, but used the microwave instead. The inside of that tiny piece of salmon is still cold, so does the brown rice. I found several fishbones in that fishy salmon. The side fruit– one piece apple wedge is not fresh too. Its surface was brown and soaked… that nightmare meal cost me $ 14. Almost twice as expensive as a normal food truck. I controlled my temper, paid, smiled and left. I found she is more polite when she is talking to English-speaking costumer. I’m not sure about whether she used microwave to heat the not fresh salmon and overcharge me because I’m a foreigner. I’m 7 months pregnant, and feel stomachache after eating at «village hut». I hope my stomach hurts is because the food was cold instead of the bacteria in that fishy salmon…“Toxoplasma” can hurts the baby badly… oh…I don’t know why I entered that hellish place…

3 things that surprised us: the unique seating, the evident good humor, the cozy hospitality. We were a group of six, disparate ages and backgrounds negotiating some tricky relationships. The owner was wonderfully accommodating, the vibes were good. We would have been happy to pay twice for the magical evening, a tribute to what the right setting and good food and gracious atmosphere can make happen.

The ribs were a tragedy. Microwaved before served, not cooked long enough, rubbery, flavorless, no smoke, the membrane was on the back, they were not cut all the way through which made it very hard to separate them because they were so tough. The bbq sauce was pretty good thankfully, because I couldn’t have gotten those ribs down without it. BBQ is a sacred thing and this was a sad experience. The slaw was meh the watermelon was fresh the rice was rice. Hopefully the other proteins are better. On a high note they were very nice and the service was pretty good.

Dog friendly tables outside and good food! It takes a little time if you just show up and order, about 15 – 20 to get your meal. But it’s cozy and the staff is very nice(it was the owner I think), they even gave my pooch a little chicken and rice :) The food is very good, I like the organic tofu, tri tip and the seared tuna, all which come with stir fry veggies. Good daily specials too, usually wild fish or special pork that I think they smoke on the premises but I’m not sure on that. It’s hard to find well sourced healthy and delicious food on the west side, but these guys do it up proper!

A Multnomah Village favorite for grab-and-go dinners. When I walked in the first time, I was welcomed to the«smallest sports bar in Portland, or so I’m told» by one of the regulars. With four indoor stools for diners, I think he may be right. Both my husband and I are big fans of their healthy bento meals. It is actually the best meal I’ve had in Multnomah Village and the one that makes me feel good after dining. Portions are not oversized and they’ve nailed that magical combination of healthy and delicious. The basis of the bento meals are high quality meat and fish options, although tofu and chicken are offered( ). I can’t pass up the lamb when it is on the specials menu and Mr. K is a tri-tip man. Your choice of white or brown rice and the vegetables remain crisp(not overcooked) and I love the kick of their special sauce. Although you have to wait a bit for your food, I consider this a good thing. Beer and wine are served and I don’t mind passing the time watching and talking football with the owner and staff. I realize that $ 12 for bento is a bit pricy, but it doesn’t seem outrageous considering the quality of the meal.
