Sometimes, you have a really bad day at work and all you want to do is go home and cry while shoving your face with French fries and glugging some wine while watching home improvement shows. Fortunately, my friends had other plans and I am so glad that I came here with them. TBH, I feel like I’ve been here before, but it was probably a solid SEVERAL years ago and I might be having memory loss from that night. ANYWAYS. Loved: –the torte sampler: small bites of the three different tortes that they offer –the maple, walnut… other things. cake: it was AMAZINGLY moist Liked: –solidly good but not amazing martini: If you want an amazing martini, walk slightly further and go to the Armory. That being said, the Armory does not have the abovementioned desserts. I’ll take it! –the atmosphere: cozy and well kept Ehhh: –The bathrooms were not SUPER clean. For a place with literally JUSTUS in there for a long time and that had only opened like an hour(ish) before we got there, I was a little not thrilled. That being said, they weren’t DISGUSTING. I am still on the fence about the service. The bartender was mostly friendly, mostly on top of things, but I had to go to the meeting and it took a LOOOOOOOOOOONNNNGGG time to get the check and pay. There was only one bartender and a few people came in, so I get that but I also feel that there was a lack of a sense of urgency. This little paragraph isn’t impacting my review, since I’m mostly on the fence about what I think about the service and I don’t think its fair to judge. Maybe the computers were running slow? Maybe he was having a rough day. I will definitely be back and I would definitely recommend.

A great place for after dinner dessert and drinks or just drinks. The mocha martini was delicious and I paired it with the flourless dark chocolate torte. Even asked for a side of strawberries and got them! Also the couple times I have been, I have not had to wait for a seat, which is amazing! Only con would be the bill came to $ 60 for two martinis and two desserts. Otherwise service and quality = 5 stars

Unreal. I had been in for a latte a few years ago, which was excellent, but my boyfriend and I decided to stop in for a night cap when we were up last weekend. First off, our waitress was awesome. Very friendly, great personality, and didn’t lie when she told us how good our orders would be. So, whoever was working Saturday evening, 1÷16÷16, I sat in the wingback chairs against the window around 10pm and you were the best. We each got the mocha martini and thought that was all we would order. However, our awesome waitress described the carrot cake in a way that made us drool. Holy crap. That carrot cake. Was unreal. I like raisins, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t think they belong in carrot cake. This carrot cake left the raisins out and it was the most moist, creamy, buttery cake I have even indulged in! Go there. Get cake. Get mocha martinis. Now.

Your review helps others learn about great local businesses. By far this is one of the best places I have been too for cocktails while here. The drinks are out of this world and are made just right. The staff is nice and friendly with a bit of snobiness but that’s what makes this place great. I have not tried any of the sweets but if they are anything like the cocktails I am sure they are as well are outstanding. A must do when in the area.

Everything was delicious! Peanut butter martini? Yes it’s awesome! And the peanut butter cake is amazing too. Also had a mocha martini and the cheesecake. Everything was A+. Cute, hipster place. Great service but plan to stay a while as its on the slow side with just 2 people working. Small place seats about 40 so 2 people working is fine. Great place and great location.

I said I would never go back and look who put her foot in her mouth? Well! I went back — twice as a matter of fact! 1.) Still limited chocolate drinks on the menu 2.) Cake is still just so-so 3.) New Bartendersss… yesss these new bartenders have made the experience extremely pleasant. Upon my return, the bartender was helpful and even added more chocolate syrup to my chocolate martini to satisfy my chocolate fix. My favorite martini is the peanut butter martini with chocolate syrup added to the rim of the glass. That martini knocked me on my ass okay. It was pretty strong. These bartenders do not play around. Delicious martinis that get the job done — love it. By the way, the martinis are huge! Sooo, with my tail tucked between my legs I have to update the amount of stars because the service was great and I’m in love with the peanut butter martini. Keep up the good work :) I do wish they would expand the menu a bit. Maybe a mix of Dark, Milk, White, and Half-Half chocolate martinis? I have so many ideas… hehehe

It was okay. I had the grapefruit martini and it was good. I’ve heard a lot about this place and was excited to try it out and I was just kind of like, «okay».

Had a great time — dessert and martinis were delectable. However the reason I’m giving it three stars is because the service and system for guests checking in were awful. Another party was seated before us and a couple that came in afterwards were sitting on a bench, however two other couples came in and were standing in front of them. Because couple #1 was not seen, both other couples were seated before them! Also, tables seated after us were waited on and served before us. Great spot and food/drinks but service needs to be executed more!

I’m going between 3 and 4 stars here but settled on 3. We were in Portland on a getaway weekend and were dying for an espresso martini and Unilocal directed us to Bar of Chocolate which was right in the center of town down beautiful Wharf Street. We walked in, saw that the décor was a mishmash of banquet facility chairs/tables, string lights hanging from the cieling, and an ambiance which didn’t lend itself to any intimacy… it was also DEAD quiet, no music at all in there. We looked at each other, and left. The next night we asked our server where we could go for a bangin’ espresso martini(what, we like them!) and she said by far, Bar of Chocolate. We told her our story from the night before but she assured us the drinks and dessert were on point, and to give it a shot. So we did. This time, there was a 10 min wait for a table, so we stayed because we were aching for a nightcap. The espresso martinis… honestly…were pretty fantastic. They had a myriad of dessert drinks available but we stayed with the tride and true. We went with a piece of chocolate cake to split, and it was good(though can’t help but think these aren’t made on site, could be wrong!) It wasn’t the most personal of experiences, and I could see it being an awkward place if there isn’t a lot of activity, but I don’t think this will be the first place we come back to given the amazing options in the Old Port.

If it’s possible to have a chocolate hangover then I did after eating the chocolate torte. Worth it!

After a lovely day of sailing on a windy, 30° afternoon, I was in need of some warm chocolate. The tort sampler, paired with a hot chocolate, was the perfect end to our evening. No hot chocolate will ever quite compare what I make at home, but this place comes as close as I could’ve hoped.

We got the chocolate torte sampler and it was amazing. Each torte slice came with a complimentary sauce and somehow they tricked me into liking the raspberry sauce even though I hate raspberries! The dessert Martinis were a little much for me. The chocolate one tasted too much of the vanilla vodka but I am not a huge vodka fan so it’s really my fault for ordering a drink with vodka(my husband really wanted a drink but didn’t want one if I didn’t get one so I succumbed and then made him finish mine).

Have a sweet tooth? Love cocktails? This is your go to place. I ordered the peanut butter martini and German chocolate cake. My wife ordered the mocha martini and crème brulé. The peanut butter martini lived up to its name with accurate peanut butter flavor. The chocolate cake was moist and the german frosting was perfect. My wife loved her drink and dessert too. Even after a long day of eating and drinking we were both able to finish because it tasted so good! The atmosphere and service were both relaxed and enjoyable.

Do you like dessert cocktails? Good, go here, it’s a no brainer. If you’re not a fan, you can still tag along. Just order a piece of cake. Everyone wins!

The hubby and I went here for dessert and an after dinner drink on date night. It was a very cozy place and had a nice vibe. The only seats available on a Saturday night were at the bar which was to be expected. We were warmly greeted by the bartender. Matt ordered an old fashioned(he commented it was well made) and I ordered a glass of Burgundy and a slice of their Chocolate Cake with Sea Salt Caramel. I was in heaven!!! The cake was perfection! The perfect balance of sweet and salty and it paired so nicely with the wine.

I was pretty disappointed with this place. I love chocolate and desert. A friend and I stopped here because I really wanted some desert and this was the perfect place for it. We both order two different g types of cakes and neither one of them came with icing. We asked for icing on the side and they said that they don’t have icing. They order all of their cakes. Seriously? How do you not have extra icing? This is supposed to be a desert place.

This was an after dinner treat where we met some friends for the first time. I didn’t even know this place existed, basically because I’m not a huge fan of chocolate or cake, so normally, this isn’t a place I’d search for. Our friends ordered a pomegranate martini and the Peanut Butter martini, a flourless, chocolate cake and a massive slice of carrot cake. My date and I ordered a Gearys Pale Ale & the limoncello martini. Martini’s — strong and amazing Cakes — delicious and huge We had great service and it was such a unique and fun atmosphere. I look forward to making a second + trips back!

Hearing the name of The Bar of Chocolate Café told me all I needed to know to try this place out. I am a chocolate lover, but hadn’t really heard much about this place. While I was home for the weekend in October I thought I would give it a try. Not a disappointment at all. The service was friendly and funny. The hot chocolate and mocha were on point for a brisk October evening. The chocolate tarte with fruit was delicious and the perfect balance of sweet chocolate and sweet fruit and whipped cream. The dark chocolate cake with sea salt caramel frosting was good, but not amazing like I expected it to be. However, I would get the chocolate tarte again in a heart beat. I’d say after going, Bar of Chocolate would be a cute date spot or a nice place to go with some girl friends for delicious drinks and chocolate therapy. Also, Kevin the bartender is a hoot.
