Drinks here are out of this world. You need to have an old fashioned, it’s possibly the best in the city. You need to get here early, they tend to run out of their two signature dishes(pork ribs and beef brisket). The fried chicken is exquisite, and the chopped pork succulent. Service is prompt and friendly. This is a staple PDX must have.

Been hearing about this place on sports radio and I had a hankering for some southern BBQ so I thought why not. I ordered the fried chicken brisket and sausage ½ pound each so I could get a variety. My wife ordered the burger and Mac and cheese. First off I never like sausage or Mac and cheese but from this day forth I LOVE revs sausage and Mac and cheese. I just have never cared for the sausages wherever j go usually greasy or just not a lot of flavor. Now the Mac and cheese boy I love me some cheese dust Mac that cost about 10cents a box. I tell you what this stuff is liquid gold I couldn’t get enough it was beyond flavorful and amazing but it’s not the normal cheddar or processes cheese Mac which I’m sure helped lol. The brisket was nice thick cuts and they will trim the fat upon request but I like the fat with every bite(stop judging me) the fried chicken is boneless and breaded and is great but even better the next day with a little aardvark sauce. Now if u have read this far you are probably wonder why not 5 stars well the only thing that I didn’t see that I would have loved and would have put this place over the top is some trip tip mmmmhmmmm

This was my first visit but it won’t be the last. I had the chicken thighs with a pork rib, collard greens, polenta, and an IPA. It was the best ever, everything was exceptional! The service was great as well.

Incredible food! Fantastic cocktails! Our go to is the Reverend Brisket Burger, but everything we’ve tried has been great. Service is always super friendly and quick, too. We’ve brought several friends there, too and they were very impressed with their meals.

This is pretty good BBQ option in Portland. I had the fried chicken the first time and it was OK but I also added a rib. The rib was really good. Going to try and the Reverend Burger this time and then update my review. Update: get the Reverend Burger it is great, and on Mondays its happy hour all day so a burger and drink is $ 10.00 which is still spendy, but good BBQ always is expensive.

Ba Ba Ba Barbecue. Like Chinese restaurants in Portland lots of good, not many greats. Portland BBQ falls into this category as well. More importantly, Reverend’s BBQ is an also ran for me. The Details: Brisket~Tender, smoky, decent smoke ring, a little on the fatty side but, that’s fine if they would make up with the amount of brisket they serve you for the price point. Solid B Fried Chicken~Over salted, spices in the batter were not what I expected and as much as I appreciate creativity with fried chicken I wasn’t ready or even more importantly feelin the Indian spices like curry in there. It was moist and fried well. but over salted, About D+ Mac N Cheese~ Rich, creamy, nicely balanced and smoky. Solid B Coleslaw~ Lacked flavor and was just bland. I would pass on this one. Sadly a C Creamy Corn w/Grilled Polenta~ I am a huge Polenta fan and this dish was really nice. The cream corn oh so gently poured over the grilled polenta triangle Solid unabashed A Collard Greens~ salty, Vinegar tasting. A miss for me. Sadly a D Deviled Eggs~ Excellent flavor, creative and ecstatically impressive. Solid A+ Mic Drop Service~Rushed, Forgot to ask us if we wanted another drink(cardinal sin) brought us the check before even asking us if we wanted desert. We all felt rushed out even after we pretty much spent well over 200. I hate feeling rushed out. D Kudos If you got this far in this review. I probably would have enjoyed this place if the salt wasn’t so heavy and the service didn’t rush us out. The search for GREATBBQ in PDX Continues.

This is a great place to get your BBQ fix when you’re in the Sellwood neighborhood. The service was fast and friendly, and the food was great! Highlights: fried chicken! Good! Not the best I’ve had, but it was solid and definitely satisfied my craving. Mac & Cheese: WOW! This was some great mac & cheese — definitely order this as a side when you’re here, you will not regret it. It came out creamy and warm, perfect for a cold night. Collard greens: meh, I’ve had better(like, the hot foods bar at Whole Foods does better collards…). The ribs: I didn’t try them, but my boyfriend did and said they were amazing!(INSIDERTIP: ribs are only $ 2.50 a piece during Happy Hour, which is what it was, so try and go then to maximize your rib eating experience at a lower price). I’ll definitely give them a try next time I’m here. Also, he got the deviled eggs, which come with burnt ends on them! YUM! The service was great! So friendly and willing to answer questions and offer suggestions. It was busy when we went: a Friday around 5:30, but the two of us sat at the bar without a wait.

Best brisket salad ever; sweetest deal in town at $ 9.95. My other favorites: Deviled eggs with brisket Gumbo – dark and smokey, with shades of brisket Burger with chopped brisket See a theme? The brisket here is divine – smokey, tender but with a satisfying crust. It’s the brisket of my dreams – the brisket other restaurants will strive to achieve. The service is always on point and friendly. After five delicious meals here, the Reverend has earned five shiny stars from me. I’m a fan.

Over priced and not that great. The sauces could have been better too. I was sadly disappointed.

Service has improved. I had to give it the extra star. Still some of the best barbeque for its class. The food here remains the constant. Its the foundation as it should be for any restaurant. They now have an explaination and a origin sheet for their food. I hope thats not a sign of Portlanders not getting it. Folks this is real BBQ. Its not supposed to be sugary sweet. Its not supposed to be fire in your mouth. Please dont miss out on the opportunity to experience something with flavor outsode the boring box that can be Portland.

Let’s start with the brisket. Flavor was good and it was cooked very well. Got the half pound order and at least ¼ pound of it was the fat cap that should have been trimmed much closer. The chopped pork sandwich was good(beware its comes with pickles on it). The order took quite some time and it was basically empty in the place. Overall it was fair. I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back, but if I’m in the area I may stop in to try the ribs next time.

Physically attractive place and smells wonderfully smoky. Let’s call this a 3.5 because of the wonderful, friendly service. And a bit of bad timing as in the last months I’ve been to Reel ‘em Inn and Smokehouse Tavern. The Reverend’s chicken is different, fried not broasted, and boneless. A lot breading which I liked but someone else not so much. A good portion and super juicy meat(thighs.) Mike’s pulled pork smoky and real. The Ozark sauce is hot, dank & gritty, which are all good. My rib was large, tasty but a little overcooked, as if steamed. The polenta nicely done but sweet; very good fries – crispy. Good beer selection.

For comfort food, this place has all others beat. Best BBQ in town. Their fried chicken is awesome! If you are thinking of going to Screen Door, come here instead. The food is better and the service is way faster!

We had a great experience! Came in around 1pm for lunch and say at the bar on a Sunday. Our bartender was very attentive and funny. My husband & I both ordered the fried chicken sandwich and my eyes rolled back from all the flavors & textures. The mac & cheese hit the spot. The polenta was amazing. Decent beer selection. The beignets were thick. Good but we were pretty full when we ordered it. We watched the Timbers game here. Excellent excellent friendly service! We’ll be back!

Holy sh*t, y’all. The fried chicken is incredibly delicious. I know, that’s a strange way to begin a review of a BBQ joint, but you needed to know this upfront. And you can add a piece of this lovely chicken(breast or thigh) to any plate for $ 3. The flavor is like Jamaican jerk, except minus the heat. Curry, cinnamon, pepper, very complex. The chopped pork shoulder is also fantastic, and comes un-sauced, as it should, so that you can taste it bare and add whatever you like to it. They offer 3 sauces, a sweet tomato-based(St Louis, though they labeled it Ozark) a spicier version, and mustard-based Carolina style. The collard greens were great as well, fresh and not cooked to death, and not drowned in vinegar. And they have a small but quality taplist. I will definitely be back!

I keep wanting to give this place another try. It’s like BBQ for the civilized. The food is okay. The onion rings are okay, the salads are inventive but okay, the fried chicken, the brisket, the drinks… Smaller portions than I’m used to seeing at a BBQ place, too. All very tidily presented in neat little cups and tin trays by nice people. Had an excellent Reverend burger there once, so maybe I’ll hold out for one more try?

Really delicious food, including a vegetarian option: smoked tempeh(either as a sandwich, on their Happy Hour Menu, or as a plate), which was delicious in their BBQ sauce! I also loved their vegetarian collard greens which were sweet and flavorful, and their Mac n Cheese with broken BBQ chips on top was awesome, too! My partner loved their fried chicken(which is on the sweet rather than peppery side, she said), and their baked beans and collard greens. Reverend’s BBQ is a fun place with fairly efficient service. Sitting outside was a boon! Everyone was inside, and it was perfect weather for this kind of food. Delicious! I’ve heard they have a red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, and Southern banana pudding, and I look forward to enjoying those — next time! :)

I did the brisket with an extra piece of fried chix. My wife had the burger. The hush puppy app is amazing either with the sauce that comes with it or try the sauces at the table. The brisket was fantastic and the boneless, skinless fried chicken thighs were to DIE for. The service is excellent! Try it out!

This place is great! I truly don’t understand why anyone would give this place less than four star review. I had read an article about the best burgers in Portland and their burnt end pimento cheese burger was on the list. We decided to make the trip down to Sellwood to try it out. The restaurant felt somewhat suburban, despite being in a small, yet quaint downtown Sellwood location. That may have just been the clientele though, being made up of more older couples and families than the young hipster crowd I’m used to closer in. We got a seat at the bar right away despite it being pretty packed. We ordered the burnt end deviled eggs as an appetizer. We knew right off the bat we wanted the cheeseburger and after much deliberation went for the sliced brisket. The bartender told us we got the last plate they had. The deviled eggs were really good. Smooth and creamy, without too much mustard. The relish went really well with the yolk mixture and the little bit of burnt end topped the whole thing off nicely. I’m glad the order came with a set of four too. I hate it when you only get two or even three halves. The cheeseburger was definitely in my top 7 I’ve ever had. It was cooked perfectly to order and the pimento cheese was the bomb. The crispy onion straws and burnt end bits added a delicious smokey, crunchy bite. Even the French fries were great. Very crispy, golden grown, and well seasoned. The brisket was excellent as well. Very tender and full of flavor. It was really smokey, which I loved. I saw a few other reviews that talked down about that, but I found it to be a huge plus. My girlfriend, who isn’t much of the slab-of-meat-eating type really liked it as well. I put little dabs of their spicy and sweet sauces on each bite and also ate a slice plain. It’s great every way! I got potato salad and mac and cheese as my sides. The mac and cheese was quite good, though I’ve had better. The potato salad had just the right amount of mayo and onion. They both went really well with the brisket. In total we spent about $ 40 for the two of us for the burger, brisket, three sides, and two drinks. Not too bad. We both left pretty full and can’t wait to go back!

Work has been crazy and I’ve been remiss in my culinary community responsibility to my fellow Unilocaler’s, I apologize, but I felt I needed to get this one out ASAP! Reverend’s BBQ is the subject of this review. Reverend’s BBQ is brought to us by the same owners of the wonderful culinary establishments of Laurelhurst Market, Simpatica Catering & Dining Hall and Ate-Oh-Ate Hawaiian restaurant; co-owners, David Kreifels, Jason Owens and Benjamin Dyer. Well, this place is very cool. Tucked away in the quaint neighborhood of Sellwood-Moreland in SE Portland overlooking the Willamette River, Reverend’s just recently opened and is already famous for their fried chicken, brisket bark or as they call it «Burnt Ends.» Reverend’s BBQ is a big step up from your typical BBQ joint. Let’s talk deviled eggs! They are out of this world and luckily for me they’re an appetizer, because I could easily indulge and look foolish ordering three or four plates, but that would never do. Although I have been tempted! It does not get any better than the great combination of a creamy egg center, Brisket Burnt Ends and caramelized onions. Each half is a little bite of heaven. Their hamburger is equally as good. Yes, Brisket Burnt Ends mixed with the hamburger meat. What! An amazing burger to say the least. You will enjoy the brisket, smoked sausage, boneless fried chicken — outstanding place. Thank you Reverends BBQ for being a part of my culinary community.
