Red Magnolia Salon

I was a bit brow shy after having some horrific experiences. Until, I met Rebecca and hallelujah! Red Magnolia is a super charming salon. Rebecca’s space is small, tidy and has an overall great vibe much like her. She’s a total pro with great style. Which certainly helped in deciding whether to let her touch my brows. She listened to what I wanted and voila! magic. My brows are perfect. Next up a facial. Thanks Rebecca!

Marci is the world’s best hair stylist. She recently relocated to this salon and I’m really happy she did as the place has class, just like Marci. She is reliable, attentive to your hairstyling needs, creative, and you’re never unhappy with your «do.» Let her work her magic on you! Oh, and you can sit outside on the back patio while your hair is processing!

Marci is by far the best colorist I have ever been to. When she moved up to Portland, I could not find a stylist who could do a believable blond. It always came out too chunky or too orange. So I resorted to flying from SF Bay Area to Portland just for Marci to make me the perfect ‘butter’ blond. I cannot live without her!

My homegirl Marci just relocated to this sassy spot — and of course I had to follow her. She’s been taming my mane for quite some time and continues to be consistent, creative, and a next level ninja with my curly, curly hair. She also has some serious knowledge in regards to hair product and has never steered me wrong. Super cute location with an amazing backyard seating area.

I was disappointed with my appointment at this salon. When I go in for any kind of beauty treatment, I look forward to a pampering, relaxing experience, and I my experience at Red Magnolia wasn’t at all. I was offered a glass of wine, which I happily accepted, and the stylist was perfectly nice, but the experience wasn’t pampering or relaxing.
In terms of my hair – it didn’t turn out badly, but it also didn’t turn out as I had hoped or expected it would. I discussed color with the stylist, and she told me that I going lighter would be better than going darker, so I wouldn’t look washed out. But when I left, my hair was significantly darker! This was hugely disappointing because I had been working with my last stylist to bring my hair back to my natural color for the past year. (Why didn’t I go back to my old stylist, you ask? Answer: I moved.) The color does nothing for my complexion, and it’s forcing me to wear more makeup than I like to wear. In terms of the cut, I showed her some pictures of styles I liked that were already close to what I had, and she seemed on-​board when we got started. But she did some interesting things to my bangs, and I had to perform surgery on them at home after taking a closer look later. They were asymmetrical and choppy and not at all like the styles I showed her.
Then when I went to pay, the service cost quite a bit more than I had expected!
Bummer.

This is a gorgeous salon with great service, artists and products! I love going there. Trina is a talented, positive and creative young woman. Rebecca has an elegant space for amazing facials and waxing.

Trina is a hair wizard. I came in with jet-​black, all one length Morticia Adams hair and she transformed me from sullen metal head to someone who actually looks like an adult without being a total square. I was very worried about this, having not changed my hair in many years. I can’t describe how awesome I looked and felt after this.

I went in for a root touch up and felt they were frustrated for such a basic appointment. I was not offered a beverage or anything, just plunked in a chair. There was very little conversation during the visit with the stylist, she was chatting with the other stylists.
When she asked how I found them, I mentioned Unilocal to which she replied, we have a five star rating there so I’m glad you found us there. Unfortunately my visit did not make five starts and $ 85 later my hair look just about the same as when I came in.

Meachell was great! She asked me questions that no hairdresser has asked me before, gave me a reality check on my original request to look a certain way… and I love what she’s done to my hair. I will definitely be back for that bang trim next month!

I arrived 5 min early for my appt. but the stylist was still styling her previous client’s hair so I was offered a beverage and enjoyed a nice glass of ice water on a comfy couch while I waited twenty minutes for my turn in the chair.
When I finally sat, there was no apology for a delay but eventually the stylist explained that the previous client is always late to her appointments, needless to say she ran into my time. That’s fine. It happens. So long as you’re willing to spend ample time on my hair as well. Which I don’t feel like she wanted to do. She rushed the end of my cut with what felt like a curt attitude because she didn’t want to take additional time and apparently did not approve of the style I was asking for which was made blatantly clear to me when (at the end of my cut) she told me it «looks like a mullet» but made no attempt to explain how we might be able to change that because «the haircut was done» & her next client who arrived a half hour early was waiting to get in «on time». Apparently it was okay to cut my appointment short to make up the time.
I don’t even know how to explain how I felt when I left there because no one has ever said something like that to me during a haircut. I did tip 20% for some reason but I
definitely felt humiliated and certainly not excited to show off the «mullet» look.
Won’t be back and will not recommend this person.

Trina is the bee’s knees! She gave me exactly what I asked for, and helped set me up for future hair goals by making it easier for my hair to grow out into a manageable style. Not to mention her killer color game. She handled my deep red to pink ombré request with ease.

I’ve been a client at Red Magnolia for several years and although my usual hairstylist moved out of town recently, it was not a difficult decision to remain a client here. I love the ambiance, merchandising and décor of this quaint salon. The owner is very pleasant and seems to value her associates. I’ve seen Meachell twice this year for hair color and she is phenomenal at concealing my very resistant «wisdom hairs.» Each of the stylists use their chosen color product and she uses the product my former stylist used as well. Meachell is upbeat and passionate about her job, and I have been very satisfied. The color seems to last a titch longer than it did previously, she blends it very well, leaves no traces of color around my hairline, and no one asks me «Did you color your hair recently?» after a visit. A lovely bonus about their service is the offer of champagne or tea during your appointment.

So I’m pretty torn writing this review, so I picked a good medium and decided to give this review 3 stars. And here’s why…
I was getting pretty tired of shaving my underarms, so last week I decided to give waxing a try for the first time. The only waxing I’ve ever had done was on my eyebrows and I totally dig it, so what the hell. I jumped on my handy dandy Unilocal app to see what this great place could recommend. I looked and looked and saw a 5 starred salon close to home. Great! It was 2am at this point, so I went to their website to check out their services. Ten bucks for an underarm wax?! Hell yes! Went through their online booking and was able to find only a handful of open slots for Rebecca (the only esthetician there). She was booked up pretty far out, so I assumed she had magic to be worked. Decided on a late morning appt the next day.
Walked in the next day to a cute little shop in a converted craftsman home just off Alberta. She greeted me and brought me right back. Told her this was my first time with an underarm wax and she assured me it wasn’t that bad. She said eyebrows are probably worst than underarms. Went through the process and it was quick and went better than I thought! Not painful at all! A+ there.
Now here’s where I got a little turned off. I went to pay and she told me it was going to be $ 20. A little shocked, I told her I was super stoked, because their website had listed the underarm wax for only $ 10. She said it wasn’t, so I was like ok, whatever. She still provided a service and I didn’t want to be a dick, so just paid the $ 20, plus tip. Now, I probably could have fought it, but I didn’t want to be «that person.» I guess I assumed, she should have just honored that listed price, ESPECIALLY after she pulled up their site and saw that it WAS listed for $ 10. She just said they’ll have to fix that. As hard as it is to find these days in Portland, I guess I was just hoping a business would go beyond the norm and be extra nice to their customers. This could have easily been a 5 star review, but a few things didn’t do it for me. One, the payment incident. Two, the sheets on the waxing table. It had some odd stains. I’m 98% sure they were clean, but if you have permanent stains, just toss them out. Give your clients that piece of mind of going into a clean establishment. Three, when I got in the shower that night, I found I still had wax on my arms that were a paaain to get off. So as unfortunate as it is, I don’t think I’ll be back.
*PS, providing a small step for your shorter clients to get onto the table would be wonderful. We’d feel less like climbing into a monster truck and more like getting a spa treatment. :)

I have been seeing Anna Rupp for my hair since she was in beauty school. She has a flair with color! She always listens to what I want and gives me just that. If you just want «a trim» that’s what you get! I have been seeing her so long I usually let her come up with the ideas for my hair because she knows my tastes, what I like and how adventurous I’m willing to be with my hair. She is also Ah-​Mazing with updos. If you need hair done for a special occasion, Anna is your gal!

Can a hairstyle change your life? I think maybe. Maggie at red magnolia salon taught me how to care for and style my thick, coarse hair. Add the perfect haircut and ‘shazam’. I have to say I look about a zillion percent better. Plus she’s sweet and nice and fun. Go here. You will love it.

Love Meachell. She’s fun, has great energy, and always does a beautiful job. I have difficult thick and damaged wavy hair and she «gets» it. I have a hard time finding a good hair stylist that knows what to do with my crazy mane so I’ve been back and will be back for round 3 come January.

It’s a salon, right? You go in there to get your haircut. So what makes it spectacular?
The place has a rockin’ jibe, and is cute as a button down to every last detail. Vintage mirrors to admire the back of your cut? Check. Mismatched ornate mirrors? Check. Cleverly disguised brooms? Check. I felt like a shabby chic rock star — this place is not your every-​day salon. Plus, add a little libation to your cut and you’ll be wondering why you don’t get your hair cut more often.
And, if you go to see Anna P., you won’t be sorry. She’s been my «hair whisperer» for years, and I’ve gotten nothing but compliments on her cuts. I followed her here, and this place couldn’t be more awesome.

I have been coming to the Red Magnolia for just over a year now and love the staff! Meachell is a true professional and works magic everytime after listening to my vague understanding of how I want my hair to look. I am someone who has no clue on how to ask for exactly what I want but, she listens intently and then talks to you about what she is hearing you say.
The color is always fabulous, luxurious and shinny but, the cut is what makes Meachell a stand out!
The glass of wine is always a welcomed sight as well.

Jami Kenna is the best! Shortly after moving to Portland, I asked a girl in Betsey Johnson who did her hair — it was the greatest pale blonde ever. And that’s how I found Jami Kenna.
If you’re blonde (or want to be), this is the stylist for you. The color is always perfect, my hair is always healthy, and the scalp massage after the shampoo is to die for. If you’re looking for someone who knows blondes, Jami is the stylist for you.
