From the outside it looks like your typical neighborhood dive bar, but it’s actually not too bad. The bartender was friendly and they have some good beers on tap. They have one small TV and one larger TV that they play sports on. But the real draw to this bar is the patio area. It’s spacious and cozy at the same time. There is plenty of room for everyone, but also feels secluded. The drinks are cheap, too. I had a Deschutes Twilight for $ 3.50. Apparently, they also have«Fireball Fridays» for UP students where shots are $ 5. Overall, it’s the type of bar you go to when you want to avoid the noise and crowds at Slim’s or Leisure. And you will be sure to meet a local that has had one drink too many.

Not a place I intend on going back to. It is quite small. My brother and I got a couple beers from tap which was fine but the wives got lemon drops which were terrible. It was so strong and bitter. It tasted like nothing but vodka with a squeeze of lemon juice. Needless to say, they did not finish their drinks. They were further disgusted by all the ants that were crawling along the table top. It was a quick stop in and dash back out the door.

It’s a run of the mill tavern, however, the bartender is amazing. A few tables, lots of video poker, and no lighting except for the neon signs. A few items on the menu, though we didn’t order any food. I was happy to see Fort George on tap, I love that beer! We met a few locals and had a great time here. It’s a wonderful neighborhood bar.

Significantly spruced up since yesteryear. Pub feels like an anachronism… This little ray of sunshine sits right on Willamette where it intersects w/the infamous Edgewater Rd. For any Roosevelt HS alum who did sports, Edgewater evokes painful memories of running up seeming 90 degree grades from the train tracks all the way to Willamette. Believe it or not, I’d take that over sitting placidly at a bar stool, tipping back the adult beverages, any day of the week. You can’t call Portway a Dive Bar, it doesn’t have that kitschy, knowingly and unabashedly scuzzy décor going on, ala Slim’s. It is at its essence, a neighborhood pub, w/working class patrons, and most of the folks seem to be on a first name basis. There is plentiful free popcorn, straight from the popper in the corner, though I found it to be way too salty. This is my first foray into this place as an adult, after running right by it(and occasionally buying a soda from the Coke machine that used to sit outside) many a time as a youngster, and I can’t image being back any time soon, but am glad to see it’s still alive and kicking…

Cool collection of tap handles! I stopped in on an long bike ride from Woodstock to St. Johns, and boy was I thirsty. At noon on a Friday, there were already five or so guys bellied up to the bar. The place is nothing special, but a totally decent neighborhood pub. Check it out if you’re already within a few blocks :)

My neighborhood tavern. I probably wouldn’t go here if it wasn’t just down the street– but I just love them. Mostly the same crowd for the last 10+ years I have been going here. Depending on what time you are here; there is a large presence of longshoremen and various terminal 4, 5 and 6 guys, otherwise it is mostly neighbors and an occasional UP kid. Very cheap, great bartenders and a Biergarten out back. The only thing that would improve the situation would be to take out the video poker– but I get it. No food, unless you count microwave pizzas, jerky, peanuts and Doritos.
