Petco

I never review big chain retail stores or restaurants, because you should know what you are getting into from the moment you walk in the door — typical big chain retail prices and lackluster customer service. But I was so impressed with the customer service last night that I just had to write a quick review. I had an issue with a coupon on my PetPals card and the cashier was more than helpful. He not only found a way to make my coupon work, but he also immediately called over assistance for all of the customers behind me in line to not keep them waiting. Two thumbs up.

I would much rather support my small local neighborhood groomers. I tried. However, they suck and petco does not! I love the groomers here. They are well trained and nurturing. The area is clean, you can see what’s going on. The dogs are calm. I trust them. Anne and Jordan are awesome. I’m sure the others are too. I would trust anyone there, really. I know my dog is in good hands when he is there.

William was hugely helpful and saved me a bunch of money while he was at it. Thanks William!

The store is fine, the groomers are okay, and the «you wash» is awful. The groomers are spendy and your dog stays in a crate most of the time, it takes around 6 – 8 hours between drop off and pick up. I’ve asked them to not pull out my dog’s ear hair, and they still do every time. I recently used the you wash, it was awful. There was pet hair on every single surface, the tubs are sideways against the wall so you can only spray/​reach one side of your dog. There’s a ton of water all over the floor. The you wash is cheap, but you get what you pay for. The space is cramped too. I recommend Beauty for the Beast, they have great tubs, you can walk on either side so you can rinse and wash all 360 degrees of your pet easily and the facility is kept clean. I only went to Petco because it was open later on Sunday, never again.

Great location for getting help & advice on our four legged counterpart needs. I can always find the healthiest pet food, treats, medicine & fun toys here for my pets of all varieties. If that’s all they offered I wouldn’t go out of my way to go here though. What really sets this store apart is the sense of friendly belongings. These staff are alot more Black Labrador that alley cat. I was recently helped by Libby & she was not only informative but didn’t try to up sell to me. She just gave me information I asked for in a way a layman like me could understand. Kudos to her & this location.

What an incredibly friendly store. The staff here is just fantastic. They do a great job and they obviously love their jobs.
The store’s selection is a bit on the small side (that’s why it doesn’t get five stars), but the people make this the store to visit. (Our dogs like it, too.)

Yes it’s a big box store, but the staff, especially the Groomers, are awesome. It doesn’t feel overly corporate like PetSmart. Prices, parking, return policy, and most importantly caring animal lovers make Petco a regular visit.
I continue to support my local community by buying my food, treats and supplements at Green Dog, but find myself here for larger purchases such as crates. Moreover, they carry a Non-​made in China brand of toy that is difficult to tear, look for the «Chewguard» label.
I do wish they would have more than one person working in Grooming in the morning.

Ugh!!! First time I went here they had expired Halo Spot Stew. So I went to the front to check out and I told them about it. I’m back 2 months later and the expired cans of food about 10 of them are still on the shelf sitting in the end cap. Clearly the girl I told the first time could care less. The food is 5 months past expiration. Hello!!! That could make a dog sick! Get it together Petco. :(I’ve ways been a loyal customer but that’s just disappointing.

The Good: We get Solid Gold dog food here. We are fans of Solid Gold and love the dry/​wet food, treats, and supplements. We also supplement our dogs with cooked meat, beef and chicken (I know, the raw foodies cringe at that). We don’t feed our dogs rawhide but Petco has cows ears which we feel are safe for our dogs. The staff are always nice and will ask if you need help. We are greeted by staff when we enter the store. It’s right next to Fred Meyer which makes it very convenient. We participate in the rewards program and get $ 5 coupons for every $ 100 purchases. One time I saved up $ 30 in coupons and was able to use them all at the same store purchase. The grooming is good. I would say adequate. The groomers are friendly and most importantly I feel my dogs are safe and will be treated well. They only require rabies shots which is nice because I don’t want to have to give my dogs yearly immunizations and I am glad Petco realizes this (or is it just because this is PDX?). $ 83 for Standard Poodle grooming and they did not charge extra for his nails to be drilled. Our Standard’s nails are brittle and can crack easily so I always ask for it to be drilled. In Iowa, they charged us $ 10 extra for the drill. Other Unilocalers have complained about the grooming price. I feel it is reasonable. These groomers work hard and deserve it. Please don’t forget to tip them.
The Bad: After 3 hours being at the grooming salon, I called and was told there were other customers who dropped by for nail trims and that was why our dog was taking longer. I have the expectation if I made an appointment for my dog to get groomed, my dog would have priority over «drop ins». I had to do some very minor trims at home on my dogs chin, around his eyes, ears and side forehead. The rest of his body was excellent. Their website for the rewards program is very slow and I often have problems logging in. The rewards coupons have to be printed and scanned at the cash register. I would prefer for the rewards to be automatically deducted at check out like with Petsmart. It is a waste of paper /​ink to make copies from the website or email.
The Ugly: My dog’s anus was a little dirty from the groomers when I noticed it at home. I wiped it off. No biggie. 4 hours is a long time to wait for a dog. If he piddled or pooped, I wold hope for any groomer to clean up afterwards. Never had this problem before with a groomer.
Overall: Gave 4 stars because Petco carries Solid Gold, I feel the food is fresh because the store is busy and I never have problems with supply. Staff are friendly and helpful. I would return to the grooming salon. Most important for me is to know my dog is being treated well and safe. My complaints were minor quibbles. It is convenient for us since we live close by.

Dog groomers were very professional and personable and did a great job with my pup.
The front desk workers loved to chat and play around with my dog and give treats!
Everyone here seems to actually love their job and animals. Brian upfront was the best and they are very helpful with questions and telling us the deals we can take advantage of.

What a wonderful experience! We had some questions regarding many things dog related and the manager helped us tremendously. She was very knowledgeable on the products in the store that would meet our needs and also gave us some great tips on training. We had an exchange and even though we didn’t have the packaging they allowed us to exchange the item without any hassle. Overall a great experience.

I love this Petco, the people they hire are always super friendly, helpful and when they stopped stocking the midsize bag of my dogs food, the manager apologized and offered to hook me up with a onetime coupon whether I bought the small or big bag. That’s good customer service and good sales.

I come to this Petco for one thing: USA-​sourced chew sticks for the dogs. The ones I get are technically processed in Mexico, but the hide is from the U.S.
I am basically convinced I killed my last dog with treats sourced from China because I did not know any better. I am an avid label-​reader now. Too late for my drool monster Spike, but good news for all my future dogs. Treats here are well labeled as to source, and I definitely appreciate that.
Staff here is exceptionally friendly to both me and whatever dog I have with me. I like to use this store for meet and greets with potential adopters of our foster dogs. It’s easy to get to from the highway, and the staff is kind enough to let us linger for as long as it takes for a potential adopter to fall in love and decide to buy a new dog setup pronto. Win-​win.

I needed to get a new tag for the pup, so I made my way over to Petco. The cashier was super friendly and upbeat, which I wasn’t expecting. Prices were reasonable for the tag and the new ball toys I picked up, and Pam is now rocking a gorgeous new piece of bling on her collar.

I’m downgrading my review significantly. And here’s why: the prices at Petco seem to be outrageous lately.
On an emergency expedition last week to buy a litter-​box and litter mat (don’t ask!), I discovered the best basic litter-​box at Petco was tiny, flimsy and cost about $ 12. Across the parking lot, in Fred Meyer, a much larger and sturdier unit was something like $ 8.
Ditto the litter mat. Petco didn’t even have a decent one for under $ 30, but Fred Meyer’s had a nice little litter mat for under $ 10.
And the problem expands outward from there! Petco’s stainless steel cat food bowls were at least $ 8. Freddy’s had very nice ones for under $ 4.
Sigh.
So, go ahead and do yourself a favor. Cross the parking lot and do some comparison shopping, at least if you’re purchasing basic cat supplies.

Be aware that this is not a «full-​sized» Petco. Having never been to this store I imagined it was like any other Petco I had been to. I was in need of some aquarium supplies and quickly realized this store predominantly caters to dogs and cats. As a matter of fact, the store is basically split down the middle; one side labeled dogs, the other cats. They had very, very limited aquarium supplies and what they did have was basically fish food and a few small Betta fish on an end cap. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to find what I needed here and had to drive 45 mins in traffic to the next closest pet store.
The staff was friendly, but I agree with other reviewers who said the store just had a general «depressed» feel to it. Kinda strange.

I seem to come here more often than I’d like to because it’s convenient. The store is depressing and I just cannot figure out the staff there. They are fairly polite to present customers but then they gossip and bad-​mouth about previous customers that have left the store. Awkward.
Also, I took a look at the pictures posted for this store. Is this for reals??? I swear it’s not the same store. The one in the pics looks cheery and new… the Glisan store not.

Not bad, but not the greatest.
I almost had a heart attack when they told me my 11 pound dog’s grooming would be $ 62-​$ 82. Um, WTF?
It ended up being less, but still.
One ear has hair longer than the other ear, and there’s a small long patch of hair that they missed by her leg.
I usually groom/​bathe my dog myself, but I just can’t keep up with life lately. So I chose to get her groomed.
I was pleased to see that her eyes weren’t goopy or crusty when I got her (she doesn’t produce tears, and some places don’t clean her up *ahemPetsmart*).
The staff was nice enough, and she had nervous bowels (sorry for the poop!), so I can’t knock them. I’m just surprised at how much they charge and how little I earn with my stupid Pets Rewards thing after spending a shit ton of money here. Gee, thanks for the $ 5 a year. One bag of my dog’s food is about $ 40 alone.

This store never disappoints. We have 4 cats so we are VERY familiar with all the pet stores within 20 miles of our house. This store is not one of our most-​visited, but today we had a really great experience.
It started yesterday when we bought a 63″ cat tree at another Petco. It was on sale for 15% off. We then stood in the pouring rain trying to load it into our car sans tarp, bungees, or any other aid. Defeated, we returned the tree to the store.
Today we decided to try again with bungees, a heavy fleece blanket, and less rain coming down. The first Petco we visited didn’t have the exact tree we wanted so we cruised over to this store. There it was! Only —– oh no the sale price ended yesterday.
Enter «Dan the Man.» I told him about our misadventure the previous day and, even though I didn’t have the previous day’s receipt with me, he very kindly took 15% off the price. He even fetched the large, bulky, heavy tree down from a very tall shelf. And he was really nice about it all. He rocked. Thanks, Dan!

I go to this Petco for one reason — they carry Da Bird.
For those who don’t know (and why on earth would you know?), Da Bird is, aside from wet food, my cat’s favorite thing in the whole wide world. It’s all she talks about. It’s all she wants. It’s really all she needs. She talks about it nonstop. Non… stop.
I have looked around elsewhere at local shops for Da Bird but I haven’t seen it around anywhere. So Petco it is. You wouldn’t want to experience the tension that infests my household when Da Bird gets a broken wing and doesn’t work anymore. It’s palpable.
