Really good food, had the deep fried eggs l, which had a pretty sweet sauce. Also had the chicken meatballs, which were also good. Both of the appetizers had pretty large portions. The main dishes were also good, we were aired away from the spicy although we requested it — so they gave us medium, which was good but not as spicy as we wanted. The inside is really nice and open with simple décor.

Really tasty Thai in a warm, pleasant atmosphere. Interesting list of unfamiliar southern Thai dishes on the menu in addition to standards. Highly recommend.

My brother and parents took me here for my bday! It was a cute little place that looks like someone converted a house into a restaurant and they serve Southern Thai cuisine. We tried the Nam Took, Pad Thai, Chicken Wings, Moo Pad Gapi, and fries rice. Nam Took(grilled beef salad): The beef didn’t look grilled and there were wayyyy too many fatty pieces on the plate. However, the dish was properly seasoned and the dressing was nice and flavorful. Chicken Wings: This sounds so basic but holy moly these are bomb!!! They’re hot, crispy, and sticky when they come out and they’re fantastic finished off with the crispy shallots on top! Pad Thai: Pretty standard, nothing mind blowing. Moo Pad Gapi: This is a very popular southern Thai dish but the shrimp paste was overpowering and the dish was way too salty! Fried Rice: This was good, but again, nothing mind blowing. Word of caution-it is on the spicy side. The service was wonderful although the food takes a while to arrive at the table and there were probably only two other tables in the restaurant while we were dining.

I had a horrible cold and their tom kha soup was highly restorative. I’m trying to find my favorite tom kha in Portland, and so far Nakhon is the winner. Later I realized they have delivery(even late night!) which I will pounce on next time I’m feeling ill and/or lazy. This is a notch above standard Thai and I really appreciated that they have many dishes you won’t find on a standard Thai menu. Their chive appetizer was unique and lovely. The interior is homey and the servers were all friendly and attentive on my visit.

First time here and so impressed! They were able to accommodate my gluten-free needs and were so patient with my ordering. I ordered pad see ew, one of my favorites. I ordered medium spice, which I normally get. He warned me their spice level is high and maybe I should get mild. I thought it was because I had asked so many questions when ordering that he thought I was a Thai food newbie(I’m not), so I told him I should be fine with medium. I started eating and holy heck! He was not kidding. I can’t remember the last time my mouth burned so. When I said, phew spicy! He brought me some mango juice to cool my mouth. I said, I can usually handle spice, but this is SPICY! And then he insisted on re-making the dish, saying, «please, you are my customer.» How sweet and respectful is that?! And this was at 10:30 at night. Love the owner, love the food. It was really delicious(I think… not sure I still have tastebuds) and I will definitely be back! P. S. Listen to their spice warnings!

I was running a bunch of errands and decided that I had no time to make myself lunch, so I decided to get some Thai to go. The place I usually order from was closed, so I looked up other Thai restaurants in the area. I came across the view for Nakhon and called in an order. Because I had never ordered from here before, I went with something super safe: pad see ew. I was impressed. I am, by no means, a Thai food connoisseur, but I like what I like. I like my noodles to be a bit on the dry side(I hate it when sauce overwhelms noodles), so these were perfection. The egg was really great. It was fried, so parts of it were crunchy, other parts rich. I look forward to trying other dishes on the menu. I’ve tried calling in to go orders since and I haven’t had any luck. Hence, me giving four stars instead of five.

OMG!!! Absolutely amazing food. I wish I could eat this food everyday. It was delicious, flavorful and spicy. Medium heat means super spicy here and it’s not for the weak heart. I have never had such amazing thai food in my life before. Our friends and I mistakenly stumbled upon this place. We were looking for another thai restaurant, but instead ended up going to Nakhon. And let me tell you I am glad we did

Wow! Absolutely delicious. I am so tired of Americanized cookie cutter Thai food. Nakhon is not that. What a fantastic meal. The flavors were so bold and each dish was UNIQUELY seasoned. They do have some of the standards, but their Tom Kha was much better than 99% of the hundreds of Thai restaurants in Portland. Lots of lemongrass and galangal, cherry tomatoes slightly done, lots of lime. Chiang Mai – you have competition!

My friends and I were here in Portland for a weekend and we were walking on Hawthorne. The first place we went to had a 45 minute wait and we didn’t want to wait. After walking a little bit on Hawthorne we found this gem. I thought the restaurant itself was adorable. It feels homey, probably because it’s a revamped house. The lighting was just right — not too bright and not too dark. My only complaint is that there’s only one bathroom which can get annoying. Our server was very nice and explained some of the items on the menu. It took a bit for our food to come, I think at least 30 minutes. The Peek Gai Tod came out first and it was so yummy! The chicken is perfectly crispy and the sauce is finger-licking good. It came out very hot but it was worth burning my tongue. The Pad See Ew came out next which was fantastic! You can taste how fresh the rice noodles are because it’s translucent and slippery. I l feel that the crunch from the Chinese broccoli completed the dish. The sauce for it was very flavorful, although now I wanna see how it tastes like on «medium» heat. The Pad Kee Mow came next which was good, but I think they should have substituted the bamboo shoots for something crunchy instead. Maybe bean sprouts or green peppers? The Tom Kad soup was very densely and intensely packed with a sour and spicy flavor — almost too intense. It’s really good if you take it a small sip at a time. The soup would pair really well if you have a cold. The prices are very reasonable here! The portions are pretty big and for the 3 of us it was around $ 45. The food also doesn’t make you feel sluggish which was great for us because we were planning on bar hopping later that night. I can’t say if I’ll be here again because I’m from Washington and there’s so much more of Portland I’d love to see and try, but I highly recommend the Peek Gai Tod and Pad See Ew!

Out of all the restaurants I visited in Portland, Nakhon was by far the worst. I was a little weary going in since there were only 22 reviews, but Carte Blanche had a three hour wait and I was hungry, impatient, and the fairy lights around the restaurant swayed me. I ordered a pork dish off the chef special menu as well as the pad see ew, both of which took forever to arrive. There was probably a 35 minute wait even though there was only a couple other parties in the restaurant. Upon arrival the dishes were still unimpressive. The portions were quite small and the pork dish was salty. just salty. and more salt. Thoroughly unimpressed.

Talk about raising the bar to another level. This is our new favorite Thai place(previous was Baiyok). Fresh, delicious food and best Thai ice tea in town!

So, for a while my sweetie and I would give up on a place in the first few minutes if our instincts told us to leave — like if there was a weird squeaking noise or snooty greeter or even a bad vibe — because we had sat through too many shitty dining experiences just because«we’re already here».. . Our experience at Nakhon was one warning sign after another — really weird smell, sickly sweet like a cheap candle stuck in a pile of garbage, hodgepodge décor, crappy seats, really awful Thai pop easy listening music, and an odd boyish man practicing(doodling, not playing) his acoustic guitar and out-of-tune singing along with said Thai pop easy listening music. I’m so glad we didn’t let all that get to us because the food was delicious. And i have a belly full of spicy flat rice noodles and quality chicken. And i want to go back already. This might become a go to to-go place for us.

YUM. I got shrimp pad thai and it was great! There were little dried shrimp that were too fishy for me but that’s the beauty of chopsticks: selective eating! It took a little while for the food but totally worth it! New favorite thai place!

Wow! This place is awesome. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave this place does it all the right way. The ambiance is like a little place on the side of a mountain in Surat Thani. And the food is magic. We ordered the turmeric marinated fish(sublime), the pork belly salad(yum), Tom Zab soup(sooo good), and spicy hard boiled eggs for an appetizer(OMG). Everything was fantastic. They even are able to fix things Thai spicy. If you like authentic Thai food then drop everything and come here.

This Southern Thai food restaurant seemed to spring up overnight. With little to no fanfare, Nakhon recently set up shop in a converted house on Hawthorne. I’ve walked by the bright, aesthetically pleasing restaurant on numerous occasions, and finally got the opportunity to try it last night. This place is GOOD. Offering different flavors than the plethora of Thai restaurants lining Hawthorne Boulevard, Nakhon is a step above the crowd. By no means is the menu the most vegetarian-friendly one around. That said, I’m fairly confident vegheads won’t leave disappointed. The pumpkin red curry was incredible, and though they take their spicy-levels SERIOUSLY(their medium is any other restaurant’s hot as hell), the curry was complex and offered flavors you don’t get the chance to experience in a run-of-the-mill red curry. The glassy-wrapper dumpling-like appetizer(which, of course, I don’t recall its name) was incredible. I am excited to try more; their menu is lush with tantalizing Southern Thai dishes and desserts. The restaurant’s interior is beautiful, simple, and inviting. The service was warm and attentive. In the words of California’s ever-wise former governor: «I’ll be back.»

In a land of a thousand Thai restaurants, this one is well worth adding to the roster of consideration. The flavors are fresh and authentic. The ingredients are high quality, fresh, and local. We went to check it out and had to return in less than a week because it was so good! The hand made Gyoza, pork belly w/Chinese broccoli, Tom kah soup, and Thai style fried chicken were all a cut above the competition. The fried chicken was crispy, deliciously seasoned, and perfectly moist on the inside. The flavors in the Tom kah broth made it one of the best I have had.(I order this frequently at Thai restaurants) the pork belly and Chinese broccoli were perfectly cooked.(I have had this dish other places and too often one or both is either over or undercooked.) They also make the best Thai iced tea in town! We have been here twice so far and both times were consistent and phenomenal! My only disappointment is the lack of patrons… You guys really need to try this place, I’m serious! I hope more people will ignore the mismatched silverware and paper napkins and give Nakhon a try!

Friendly staff and delicious Thai food. The Southern Thai menu options provide something new to the largely Northern Thai specialties in the area. We ordered Pad Thai with tofu and the sea bass with ginger and onion. Everything was fresh and well made, I will definitely be returning

I am Thai, and I found that this is one of the most authentic Thai restaurant you can find around here. A lot of dishes are very unique comparing to other Thai restaurant. Rather than playing americanized like most of other restaurants, Nakhon found the way to choose the original dishes and incorporate with the choice of limited ingredient they have in the US. I took 7 of my friends there. Most of them have different nationality. But all of them agrees that the food is fantastic !

The food is amazing. The crew is super nice and amazingly eager to make you happy. Eat here. Now. Handmade desserts, humongoid portions, local ingredients, and thai iced tea flowing like the nectar of the gods it is. And holy crap! The Gyo Nahm is easily the best soup I’ve ever had in my life. It’s in the old Hawthorne Street Café spot(where I THINK the new owners still serve breakfasty and brunchy items before dinner), so don’t think you’ve already been. Stop again! Oh man, I wish I was still hungry.
