If you’re looking for the best Breakfast Burrito in town, look no further than Meat Cheese Bread. 5 stars for the whole menu beyond the burrito too. Sandwiches are big, prices are great and the service is above par.

Out of all the dishes I have had since living in PDX(about 7 months) I have to say that«The Maple» at Meat, Cheese, Bread is one of the best. Wow… What flavor !! Absolutely unique and delicious !!!

Really interesting menu. The ‘Maple’ was super unique and super portland. Breading pudding sandwich with sausage cheese and fennel. So interesting!

My chicken salad sandwich was slimy. There is no other way to put it. Don’t order that if you go.

Two-word reason to visit: breakfast burritos. So amazing. They are a bit expensive but worth it. Hash browns and eggs are cooked perfectly in a warm flour shell with spicy green chile salsa. We usually add on bacon and avocado for extra deliciousness. Have to subtract a star for the weird spotty phone service. I usually order burritos for a group(5 – 6) and they’ve asked me to call the order in ahead of time to give them time to prep it. Sometimes the phone service is great, other times the person on the end sounds half asleep and doesn’t understand what I’m saying. A few times the order has been wrong, and once they shorted a burrito that I paid for. Mistakes happen, and they’re always great if you order in person, so I’m not sure what’s up with the person answering the phone. Anyway it’s not going to deter me from getting amazing burrito awesomeness for my Sunday morning.

Food is about a 3.5 overall. It’s generally just above average. The quality is usually good, but I have gotten bad greens in my salad on more than one occasion. Where sandwiches are concerned, assembly and portion size are inconsistent, which I think is kinda crappy. If you’re gonna charge like $ 10 for a sandwich, don’t serve me something that’s 80% bread, looks like a complete mess, etc. Ambiance is very«portlandy»: colorful murals, very loud music, additional outdoor seating, etc. I feel like the space has a lot going for it, but needs to be zoned better. The shop front is small and poorly organized, and there isn’t a distinction between areas for the line, pick up/waiting area, and restaurant seating. The result is an absolute clusterf*ck of people, even when it’s not especially busy. On particularly bad crowd control days, I have literally seen people’s asses hovering over strangers tables while they eat their meals… Although I guess that could make your meal more or less appetizing, depends on how much you like asses. My biggest gripe with MCB is their front of house staff. I’ve been here probably 20 times, and I’ve only had a pleasant experience at the till once! There are two guys in particular, who constantly act like they don’t want to be there. For the customer, this translates to a condescending, abrasive ‘tude, and an overarching feeling that they want you to go the hell away. This is a sentiment that I see echoed in a lot of the other reviews here. I honestly don’t understand this part of the business model, but it’s almost comical. Like why would you willfully put people who are assholes as the front line for customer interaction… unless you wanted to convey to customers«Yes! We ARE assholes!»? I just don’t get it. I never expect to be fawned over in small/hip restaurants like this, but honestly, the attitude from these guys is enough to make me lose my appetite!

Park Kitchen sandwich with roast beef and dotted with blue cheese is the bomb! That’s the only sandwich I’ve had from Meat Cheese Bread after years of contemplating a visit, but there were no regrets. Just a delicious mess!

I mean, its fine. Had the hot pork sandwich that comes with collard greens and such, the cold turkey sandwich, pasta salad, and soup of the day which was ham vegetable. The soup was probably the saltiest soup I’ve ever had. And I’m Korean which means my daily diet usually involves some super salty, MSG-laden soup. This cup of soup was saltier than all that. Couldn’t eat it. Whatever, we came for the sandwiches not the soup. Pasta salad, really nice but, again, we came for the sandwiches right? Pork collard green sandwich was a hot mess. Definitely a knife and fork operation. The bottom piece ciabatta or whatever was pretty much just goop. Good flavors though. Always a fan of collard greens. Turkey sandwich was lettuce mayo bacon and probably some other things on sourdough. Unremarkable. I mean, fine. But yakno. It was whatevs. I will say that even though I sat outside, during the 5 minutes it took for me to place my order my entire being was saturated in the smell of bacon. It was overwhelming, personally. Others seemed to enjoy it. I don’t think I’ll ever really crave this experience again.

Their sandwiches are better than few places I’ve been before. I’ve had a few of their options including their breakfast burrito, and still found myself wanting and expecting more from the hype I’ve heard about this joint. The fellas in the kitchen and working the counter are super cool, and helpful. By no means am I putting down their food, it’s tasty. Not as good as I was hearing though.

Meat Cheese Bread is okay. The prices are high and the wait times are medium. They don’t have too many of each kind of their sandwich, hot and cold. The seating is comfortable and the music is interesting. Nothing particularly stands out. I went into Meat Cheese Bread after having read abut it. After much deliberation, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. It came to me after about ten minutes. What was weird is that it tasted liked a tuna melt. No matter which way you slice it, the flavor was good, but it was not too different than home. And that sandwich is a popular option after all. It was crisp and well put together though. They just should have used a good sauce and not have tried to reinvent an inferior wheel. The nine dollar price and bottles which cannot be refilled also lost it’s appeal on me. Meat Cheese Bread is radically average for a sandwich.

I’m continuing to eat my way through Portland’s many sandwich shops, and there are a ton. Meat Cheese Bread has a well edited menu of four hot sandwiches, four cold sandwiches and a couple of salad options. The BLB(bacon lettuce beet) is worthy of trying to recreate, which is what I’m going to do. The sweet roasted beets coupled with the salty, smoky bacon is a great combo. Panzanella salad is spring on a plate. Grilled asparagus, coutons, radishes, pickled onions, salsa verde and croutons all work well together. In a city of sandwich options, this one skyrocketed to the top of my list.

This place is amazing. The Maple is one of the best sandwiches ever. It has sausage, spicy, cheddar, shaved fennel, and an over easy egg(egg optional) on bread pudding bread. That’s right it’s bread is bread pudding. The griddle it beautifully. It’s a knife and fork sandwich. Noms. Noms. Noms. The Park Kitchen(steak, pickled onions, blue cheese, aioli, vinaigrette) is also very good and the other sandwiches look great, but it’s all about the Maple. Go there. Order that.

Sure, the name they have now is pretty descriptive. But I think a more accurate name might be «Dope Ass Sandwiches», because that’s what they serve. Or to be even more accurate, «Dope Ass Sandwiches And Damn Awesome Breakfast Burritos!» Yeah, that sounds right to me! I am fortunate enough to live just down the street from MCB, and thus far everything I’ve eaten has been more than solid. The breakfast burritos are one of my pre-hike staples. The default option is stuffed with hash browns, egg, cheddar and green chili salsa and sells for $ 7. I typically add a protein(usually bacon) and avocado, which bumps the price up to $ 10, which does make it a sort of spendy burrito. To me it’s worth it, but I firmly believe that it’s not a meal unless it has meat. Bottom line, either way you get it, it’s gonna be damn tasty. That shouldn’t overshadow their lunches. I’ve gotten just plain nasty with a couple of their sandwiches, including their Pulled Pork(roasted pork shoulder with grilled rapini, aioli and salsa verde) and the Sausage Marinara(served with smoked provolone, parmesan and herbs on a toasted primo roll.) Most recently I ordered a barbacoa special. All of these have been messy, but all have also been stupid delicious. I do think the price at MCB is a bit high, which is my only real complaint. I wish the sandwiches came with some sort of side. their pasta salad is reliably delicious, but even a simple side of chips would make me feel like my money was better spent. But still, it’s not outrageously expensive so I won’t gripe too much. MCB does a great job at what they do, and I look forward to getting my hands and mouth-hole on the rest of their menu.

This is one of my favorite little spots. Everything is high quality, well made, and super flavorful. You can make any sandwich as a salad, thats cool. If you’re into that. 6 times in and zero complaints? It’s hard to make a repeat customer out of me. This place has a special place in my heart. One of the best breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, and lunch sandwiches in town. All 3 in one tiny hole in the hall? Yes please.

I love, love, love the sausage marinara on a cold winters day. It’s hearty, perfect amount of tang, not too acidic, cheesy– on a delicious roll. Fast service, and a great lunch spot. The place fills up fast, and the seating is a bit limited, but fast turn around. Breakfast sandwiches are served all day, and they are lunch size breakfast sandwiches. You will not leave hungry.

Five stars just for the breakfast burrito. AUTHENTICNEWMEXICANGREENCHILIBEHERE! As a regular visitor to New Mexico ive searched far and wide for legit southwestern style taste and the breakfast burrito took me right back to Central Ave in ABQ. I’m told the owner used to work at Albuquerque’s famous Frontier restaurant so its all good

Stopped in here on a chilly day after class and was starving. I got the roasted mushroom sandwich(unfortunately one of the only vegetarian options, but whatever, it was FANTASTIC). The size was perfect, I walked out of there very satisfied. Also, TRYTHEIRBAKEDGOODS! I got a brownie and accidentally ate the whole thing before they had a chance to make my sandwich!

Lunch on a sunny Saturday had me searching for something new. I had heard about this tasty sandwich spot from a few folks so I ventured on in to give it a try. The joint is small. They have a few picnic tables out front for good weather. Umbrellas provided at each table. Walk through the old screen door with a well used squeezing sound as you enter. There is a nice large chalk board with their special sammies on the left where you order. Drinks for sale are out on display. They had two tasty beers on tap. I got a nice lager from Hood River. There is a small kitchen on the right side of the place with two hard working sammie ninja masters. The seating inside is small and cozy. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with aioli and broccolini. It was amazingly full of flavor, juice like you wouldn’t believe, and it was a total mess of yumminess!!! Loved this one but you may not want to get it on the first date… it was all over my plate and falling off into the plate. Two little girls were with me for a lunch date that day and could not decide on a sandwich to split. The guy said they only do full sandwiches and so although one wanted the chicken salad and the other wanted turkey they both agreed on turkey. When we got the sandwiches they had made them each a half of what they originally wanted. One of the Sammie ninja masters said he overheard our conversation and wanted to make the girls happy. It was really nice of him and the girls were stoked. They told me they would give a five star review :) and that the sandwiches were sooooo good! Win –win for all!!!
