Valentine’s Day sucks. There, I said it. I have pretty much given up on going out to dinner on V-Day because it seems you just can’t win. Places I want to go are booked way in advance(last year, Paley’s practically laughed when my friend called for a reservation in January) and then there is the whole ‘special menu’ pricing, trying to find a sitter, etc. Just way too much pressure to have a ‘magical’ evening for a relationship — new or old. Besides, I am a strong believer that true love is most profound in the little everyday moments and not the grand gestures. What do I like about Valentine’s Day? Getting a little treat for my mom and dad who are sweethearts all year round. The last few years I’ve ordered a Valentine-A-Gram( ) from Loaves and Fishes and it is always a big hit. Loaves and Fishes is a local non-profit that provides meals and companionship to seniors(no, not that kind of companionship!). Their vision statement is «No senior will go hungry or experience social isolation.» A former co-worker also volunteered regularly for the organization and I’ve always gotten a good vibe from them. The products in the Valentine-A-Gram are donated by local businesses, so 100% of the purchase price goes to providing meals for seniors. In past years, the gift boxes have been a mix of products ready for consumption and gift cards for the rest. This year, orders must be placed by Feb. 9th and are delivered on Friday, Feb. 13th. So, I wish you all a very Happy V-Day with as much companionship as your heart desires.
