This is one of the best breakfast spots in Portland. Take folks here who appreciate good food. The crowd is cool but not hipster, classy but not snobby. Get in before 9:30 on weekends unless you don’t mind a wait. Amazing hash, benedicts, and bloody marys. Portions are not huge but perfectly presented and prepared.

This place is full of great potential, but they were out of a lot of menu options and ingredients. The service was excellent, our waiter was informative and prompt…

I’m sad to say that it appears that they have closed their doors for good. We went for our second breakfast there a few days ago and most of the equipment is gone, and painting supplies are present. I hope they are doing a bit of remodeling. Well for what its worth, the food was quite good, the service was pleasant if not a bit hectic due to the line we had to wait in. They always seemed busy which makes this closure all the more surprising. Fingers crossed.

I am breaking up with you! I loved you, I bought a living social coupon. I have been there — 3 times in the last month — including 2 weekend days and you are shut. I have called — no one picks up, there is no note and your website is defunct.

Having lived in Sellwood for a few months, I often passed by Hash and peeked in but it took me almost a year to visit finally. I am so glad I did. First off, I really enjoy Hash’s clean, simple aesthetic — the true embracing of Scandinavian minimalism. Aesthetics aside though, I really enjoyed my breakfast. My friend and I each ordered a Bloody Mary, which was one of the most savoury and complex cocktails I’ve ever tasted. We shared a portion of the æbleskiver, which were lovely, delicate, and melted in my mouth. As my main course I had the corn beef hash, which was perfectly seasoned. The potatoes were also of the perfect consistency. My only complaints were that my side of apples were a bit crisp for my taste(though that’s probably just a personal preference), the service was a little slow, and it is probably on the pricier side given the portion sizes. Also, the space is very small so I am not surprised by all the reviews mentioning a long wait time. Other than that, I highly recommend Hash and would love to revisit it when I find myself in Portland again.

The best Eggs Florentine ever!!! I actually got it with arugula, and it was amazing! The chef made the hollandaise sauce to order, and it was creamy, lemony, and delightful! The english muffins looked and tasted homemade. The coffee, served french press style is awesome. Service was good. Prices were fine. I love Hash. Oh, and the mushroom hash is creative and delicious!

We were given a living social certificate to go try out this place. We were trying to find a place to meet a friend for breakfast so we decided on Hash. When we arrived we were third in line, but we still waited almost a half hour for a table. It is an open, airy loft style place that only had about 7 tables or so and then some room at the bar. The kitchen is open to the restaurant as well, so with the high ceilings it was very noisy inside. We went outside to wait. There is coffee and a whole bookshelf of toys for kids which my son appreciated. When we finally got our table, we sat there for about 20 minutes before anyone came over to great our table. The had pre set it with mini scones and waters so we were not completely without. I ordered the french toast and asked for one of the slices to be on a separate plate for my son, my husband ordered the biscuits and gravy and our friend had the eggs beni. They brought out the food, including my sons french toast on the side but forgot my main order. They apologized and put it in on the fly and when we got our bill they only charged us for a half order. So, all was fine, it was an honest mistake. The food was OK, nothing spectacular about it. As far as good breakfast places in Portland, I would not add it to my list of regulars and the noise really started getting to me at the end.

From all reports of hash bars in Amsterdam this trendy little breakfast joint in Portland has some splainin’ to do, because it certainly does not live up to its name, nor does it live up to my idea of a true Portland breakfast experience. Hash is a fairly open space that boasts an unfinished loft feel, with an open kitchen and quite a bit of natural light, but because the acoustics are so good the noise level can be a bit excruciating at times. The wait staff seemed un-phased by the noise of the crowd; they were all friendly and focused. Coming in to find a wait list of names 6 or more deep and not hearing your party’s name called for at least 30 minutes is not rare in Portland at breakfast time(also known as lunch time in other parts of the world), and having self-serve coffee readily available for the hungry and or hung-over masses is always a nice bonus. FOOD: Hash’s version of corned-beef hash is basically potatoes O’Brien with a few(really, just a few) strips of meat lay over the top. Also, somewhere between when it was being«plated»(as the waitress warned) to the time it was served, the food got cold. Yep — cold. The browns. The toast. Everything. Cold. From the tiny little pre-breakfast scones to the tiny little salt and pepper shakers to the square-white-I’m-trying-to-look-simple-yet-I-want-be-elegant plates to the um «art» on the walls, it all seemed a bit pretentious. Someone is trying way too hard in a town where we loves us some simple home-cooked breakfast. Tone the«cheese» down a bit and warm the atmosphere up a little. Maybe take a fieldtrip to Cup and Saucer, Jam, The Cricket, or even Milo’s and take note, Portlanders can tell if their breakfast was made with heart and Hash’s breakfast barely had a pulse.

The wait was FOREVER with four people. I did not envy the wait staff. Once seated, everything was fine and delicious and all, but really: waiting for TWOHOURS was a bit much. I can’t believe we didn’t bail, but I suppose there’s a point at which it becomes more ridiculous to leave than to keep waiting. The food was really great once we were seated and the staff were very friendly, considering, as one said, that it was abnormally busy. It seems like the key to this restaurant is to show up way early and be prepared to wait if you don’t.

Words of wisdom: never show up at a restaurant on a day that a Groupon expires. We arrived to meet some friends for brunch at Hash. There were dozens of people in line. Well, «line» is an overstatement – it was a mosh pit. Hash is a medium-sized building in Sellwood with lots of open space, but it truly seemed like there weren’t that many tables(but plenty of standing-around space). Eventually, we were seated after standing for two and a half hours. By that time, we all knew what we wanted to eat(plenty of time to study the menu). I ordered the corned beef hash and the wife ordered the ableskiver(Danish pancake). Unfortunately, the waitress informed us that they had just served the last ableskivers(at some time between 12:15 when we arrived and 2:45 when we actually sat down), so she ordered the pork belly hash instead. We had read from other reviews that mini scones were served up as an appetizer. Because the waitress didn’t mention this to us, my wife asked. «Sure, I’ll see if there are some,» was the reply. Fortunately, we did get some and they were buttery and warm, served with a nice little cup of applesauce. Now, by the time we were seated, the restaurant was still moderately busy, and it was clear that the cooks were busting ass and pushing out food. However, somewhere between the kitchen and our tables, time was lost and customers weren’t being served up in a timely manner. We noticed tables that stood empty and ready for customers who weren’t seated – the impression was just that this machine wasn’t well-oiled. Because of this, we waited a pretty long time for our food – longer than thirty minutes. While we waited, our party of six passed the time by chatting and drinking coffee, which was great. Smooth and hot, and refilled often. A little too often, in fact, and I think I had about 3 cups before the food finally came out. I could feel the caffeine manifest itself as a noticeableincreaseinmyheartrateandbuzzinmyheadohlordneedsomesolidfoodtoabsorbthecoffeeeeeeee… FINALLY, the food came to our table. The hash was small cubed potatoes topped with pulled brisket and a poached egg. The belly hash was similar, but with a small, thick slice of pork belly on top – nice hammy taste surrounded by enough savory fatty goodness that makes bacon so nice. A compact amount, perhaps on the smaller side, but not small. Don’t expect an American-sized pile of mash though. Now, this dish came with some kind of Danish apple thing. Although I don’t know what it should have been, I do know what was served was a little off-putting. Basically, it was three thick apple wedges with some cinnamon sugar and bits of hazelnut sprinkled on top. I had no problem with the taste – however, presentation was a little lacking. The brown-ness of the sugar and nuts was absorbed by the apples, making it look like the restaurant gave you some cut apples that had been sitting out for a bit(brown). It just looked like a half-hearted effort. In fact, that’s how I’d describe our whole experience at Hash: lacking in polish and attention. The waitress dropped off our bill and said, «Take your time, no rush.» Looking back, after our 3.5 hour lunch, I think that is the overall attitude here taken by the waitstaff and cooks: «Take your time, no rush.»

The food was meh. The prices were ridiculous. The waiter was horrible. I will never return to this restaurant. If I had gotten then same meal for the same price and had an awesome(or even competent) waiter this would’ve been an almost 3 star rating. The round hashbrown cake thing was pretty good, and at $ 2 it was worth it. Only go to this place if you like over priced, sadly small portions of mediocre food, served to you by a waiter who clearly would rather you not be there.

We had the classic beni and the Corned beef hash. The guys at the next table swear by the chicken fried steak. On my quest to find the perfect, nay. the best, eggs benedict(other than my own!) I am continually… underwhelmed. Parts of this beni were very good. The english muffin was good, the canadian style bacon/ham was very chewy. Sad, because ham is what I LOVE about eggs benedict. The hollandaise was house made, you got a nice hint of the lemon, which was good. The very very very best part was the perfectly poached eggs. In all my years of eggs benedict this was the most perfectly poached egg. And that made it a good meal. K had the corned beef hash. He also had them add the seasonal mushrooms, which were good. He said next time he would ask them to crisp the potatoes a bit more. He had the rye bread toast, and I could have made a very satisfying meal out of an entire loaf of it, it was seriously great bread/toast. I am waffling between a 3 and a 4 star review. The food was good. The service was friendly and welcoming except that we never got a coffee refill, so we finally got it ourselves. We had a groupon, so it was worth a try, and we will probably be back. I want to try the aebleskivers and according to the next table we have to try the chicken fried steak. So our next visit will include those.

Lisa S pretty much nailed it, something lacking from each element of the meal. My hash, the spring veggie(asparagus), needed salt. No, scratch that, it needed some flavor in general, the tiny(my photo actually makes it look larger than it was somehow) portion of mostly potatoes didn’t taste like much. Pretty? Yes, very pretty. But for the price tag(about $ 10), wasn’t worth it. The egg, also very pretty, sitting atop my hash, perfectly round, tasted too much like the vinegar in the cooking water. The«brioche» toast was ok, and the rhubarb jam helped a bit, but it would have been better with a little sugar in it. My dining companion’s dish was the better choice, he went for the brioche french toast, which came with a nice berry sauce that I promptly spilled down my shirt. Honestly, my favorite part of the meal may have been the fancy dishes everything came on. We went outside of normal brunch time, so perhaps that helped with the wait I’ve heard so much about at this place. It was ok… not saying it was horrible, but it’s on the expensive side for what you get, just a heads-up. The portions were reasonable, like normal-sized meals should be, and I certainly wasn’t expecting a Grand Slam. Everything was presented well, it just wasn’t that great. I might give it another shot in the future, but there are way better breakfast/brunch places very close by in Sellwood.

Oh man… the bill was $ 32 for two people(no alcohol, either)…and if we hadn’t had a Groupon we would have been PISSED. With the Groupon, we got the meal for $ 19.(This was still pushing it, in terms of value). Tiny, flavor-less meal on a tiny plate with a very small amount of bland, seasoning-free ingredients. The butter needed salt. The jam needed sugar. The omelette needed pepper. The brioche tasted like cardboard. Instead of blanching and then squeezing the spinach, they included it *raw* in the omelette(stems too), so the«first cut» caused this wave of water to unleash all over my plate. A word of advice to the kitchen staff: take the veggies, sauté them in a bit of oil and seasoning, reduce moisture a bit and *then* fold into the omelette with the cheese. Better, no? A small exquisitely-prepared plate of breakfast can be rich, flavorful and worth the price… if you are at Broder.

A very solid Portland/Sellwood breakfast choice. Like Robb W. points out, the reviews on Unilocal for Hash are mixed and this did lower my expectations a bit. The décor was industrial and tightly packed with customers, but the noise level was low. There was a ten minute wait in a comfortable waiting area with black leather sofas. Free coffee included. We were seated and treated with complimentary mini blueberry scones with tasty apple butter. I ordered a cup of Courier Peaberry coffee that I hadn’t enjoyed since Half & Half(RIP). It was easy ordering from the elegantly designed menu. Service was polite and prompt. I ordered the Spring Veggie Hash with asparagus and leeks while my partner chose the Oyster Mushroom Hash. I never saw the bottom of my coffee cup during the ten minute wait for our choices. The food came on stunning white plates that showcased the color and texture of the food. The taste was delicious and filling. I strongly recommend the 50¢ upgrade to a cheddar biscuit. Overall I thought Hash was a nice experience while coming close to the threshold of what constitutes an affordable breakfast option.

If you’re headed out for breakfast at a top notch spot on a Saturday at 10AM, expect a wait, and at Hash is no exception. Don’t fret, when you arrive, grab your mug, start your coffee consumption, find something to read and sit on their comfty leather couch. They brew Courier Coffee, so fill up early and often. The industrial loft look isn’t for everyone. It works for us. We couldn’t help but notice that the bare bone interior drew more attention to Hash’s their beautifully plated food and modern dinnerware. To honor the restaurant’s namesake I ordered a hash, the hanger steak hash to be specific. The portions look dainty on the plate, but once I finished, I was stuffed. The steak hash was delicious. The order came with a side of slice pears, brioche toast with house made jam and some scones are starter. If Hash is a drive, I recommend trying it once. At least, then you’ll know why locals keep coming back for more.

This place is called hash and features hash so I got hash. And it was good. Good thing. The corned beef hash was a just-right portion. It was flavorful and the brioche with was a good accompaniment. Not sure about the fruit on the side, but the rest of the package was a good brunch. Plus we got there at around 2 so there was no one else there. They were probably packed earlier; it seems that it’s a tradition that we eat brunch right before the restaurant is about to close. Oh well. Also, they are right near the Goodwill Bins, so it’s a good spot to get some energy before going there to sift through junk that you pay for by the pound.

I’ll tell you what. When it comes to a dreamy aebliskiver(Danish pancake) Broder in Clinton Corner certainly has stiff competition from Hash. Currently at Hash, you have the choice of blueberry or carmel apple aeblskiver. I opted for blueberry. Absolutely perfect. The aebleskiver comes with a whitish(macadamia nut?) sauce and maple syrup. Needless to say, I give two thumbs up — way up — for this dish. I loved the fresh and flavorful cubed watermelon and blackberries that came in a cool-looking lopsided bowl. For sides, I ordered bacon and hash. The smoked bacon was very good, and a bargain at just $ 2. I liked how they sliced the rashers into half, giving a tidy and unique appearance to the bacon. At first I liked the side hash that I ordered. But the more I chowed down on it, the heavy oiliness and the green bell pepper began to grate on me. However, it did come nicely presented with a dusting of pepper around the edge of the plate. I’m not sure what cuisine school of thought Hash is coming from… but I’m doubtful about serving orange juice and water at room temperature. Doesn’t work for me. I did note that the gentleman sitting a couple tables away from me requested, and received, a glass of water with ice cubes, so I guess you just have to ask! Also, the orange juice did not have any pulp and didn’t seem fresh-squeezed. A goof-up in the kitchen occurred with my order. Somehow the cook thought that I wanted scrambled eggs instead of bacon. My waitress realized the error before the food came to the table, but the mixup resulted in my bacon coming out several minutes after my aebliskiver and hash. I am well aware of «industrial» as a look, but the inside of Hash seems more unfinished than industrial, in particular the visible silver wrapping around the ductwork in the kitchen and the insulation sticking out at the top of the wall in the front of the restaurant. If Hash considers finishing their unfinished interior, they might consider building a wall between the restrooms and the dining area. Let’s just say the current configuration is not aesthetically pleasing. But all in all, I enjoyed a very good meal on my first visit to Hash and plan to be back.

+: Mini scone starters are always a plus for me. -: Took way too long for our food to come with no apology or acknowledgment whatsoever. !: The ableskivers were much better than my steak hash and the restaurant is called Hash. ?: I’ll gladly wait in line for an awesome restaurant but once I’m finally in and so is my order, the food needs to arrive sooner than it did here. Unfortunately the food wasn’t worth the wait.

I’m just so close to giving the full 5. I just so rarely do that I can’t bring myself to do it. But I’m close… something could easily push me over the edge — very, very easily. The space is great — big and open, but still has a friendly and cozy feel. The staff was great — so, so friendly, and very helpful. When I asked what I should order, there was excellent feedback — something I just find so rare these days. Like when a waitress says, «oh, everything’s good» — I hate that one. Not here, nope. Plenty of good information, and I was very pleased with what I got. I had the steak hash — potatoes are perfectly cooked, steak was exactly like I ordered. I might have ordered medium if I knew that they were actually going to cook it on the rare side of medium rare. Point is — they ACTUALLY cook the meat the way that I ordered it. Thank you so much. Oh, and having this dish also gave me the opportunity to eat the homemade hot sauce. While not super hot, it was super flavorful. My boyfriend had the french toast and holy crap, that was awesome! If you’re looking for the sweet tooth to be satisfied — look no further. The fruit purée and vanilla crème fresh were ridiculously good. The fruit that came on the side for both breakfasts also had this fruit purée poured over it. I honestly have never had better fruit in my life. And I’m not joking… okay, I just changed the stars to 5. I can’t take it anymore… it’s deserved. We paid $ 24 for two awesome breakfasts and two excellent cups of coffee. I get decaf and usually it’s just so-so. Not here… the coffee is superb — and I kinda ended up drinking more of it that I normally would. That was my only complaint — things are so good that I feel overeating/drinking could be a problem. Otherwise, I can’t say enough good things about this place. Oh — and what’s even better… within walking distance from my house. 5 it is — and I don’t even feel bad about it.
