This is one of the only good carts I will go to. I have been to Germany and tried many different kinds of Brats, but nothing beats Altengartz! They have the best Brats I’ve ever had! I always get the single Brat with Sauerkraut and grilled onion. You can also buy prepackaged Brats and cook them at home!

Garlic sauerkraut brat all the way. I love mustard but I gave it a bite without and it didn’t need it. The truck owner is gregarious as all get out. I wish they had lagers for sale to drink alongside, but what are you going to do. It’s also one of those few carts with tables and seats for their customers.

I’m starting to salivate. Not only are the brats seriously delicious — straight off the grill, the even toasts the buns and I don’t know why but those buns are amazing! We tried the original, as well as the curry. The curry was good, but I think I like the original better. We ended up buying 10 frozen ones to cart back to Seattle. Next time we’re in town we’ll load up again :) I heard you can order these and have them shipped. :) The owner is also super friendly and talking to him you know he’s really into what he does. Recommendation: Definitely top on the list for food trucks!

Amazing brats, authentic sides, nice cook, great price. What more could one want in a food truck?

Ordered a regular bratwurst, but in hindsight I should have added the onions. Definitely would say that it’s a brat that doesn’t have a bunch of filler, it’s delicious and stands well on it’s own. They have a bunch of great mustard options to add that extra kick you’re looking for. Definitely have plans to return and get one with onions :]

Just saw the Altengartz Bratwurst truck pull out of their long-time spot on Alder, and the tables are gone as well. Anybody know what’s up?

Wonderful bratwurst served fresh, quick, and cheap by people who really care. Their bratwursts arrive sizzling-hot and nicely grilled, bursting with good, classic German flavor. While one brat isn’t quite enough for a dinner, it’s definitely works for lunch. I usually like mine with sauerkraut(I think they make their own there? It’s good, either way) and spicy mustard, though sometimes I also get the grilled onions if I’m craving a little extra sweetness. They’ve got a nice variety of mustards to choose from. I tend to get the Bavarian stone-ground, but I recall seeing jalapeño, horseradish, and Dijon mustards in addition to the mild yellow stuff, and they’re stationed right by the cart so you can add them to taste. These guys stand by their product – I don’t know too many foodcarts that offer free samples hot off the grill. And yet, despite this pride, you’ll never see any aggressive, tout-like behavior from them, unlike some of their neighbors. Here’s something else to love about Altengartz: they have a little seating area right next to the cart, complete with tables. Not many downtown carts do this, and I greatly appreciate it. Furthermore, it’s immaculately maintained, with not a bit of litter in sight, and devoid of spilled condiments and crumbs. I really admire how Altengartz’s people go the extra mile in how they treat their customers. Consistently great food, low prices, and a convenient space to eat in. Keep on doing what you do, guys!

THEBESTTHINGYOUCANPUTBETWEENYOURBUNS! I reviewed this cart in 2009 way before the food cart industry had taken off in Portland! I don’t know how they did it but they have new menu items that are awesome! There is a reason they are rated so high and I am glad they keep there prices family friendly!

You guys are the best!!! Had these bratwurst a couple months ago while visiting from Seattle and I had to have more! I was recently down there and have to have the works again! The melted cheese, the grilled onions, and sauerkraut mmmm yes please!!! It all just melts perfectly together and when you take that last bite you are left wanting more! If you are ever in the portland area you must go to this food truck!!! They make your food when you order it so you know it’s fresh! They make they even package the sausage themselves!!! They are super kind and very easy to talk to. :) Overall, I will definitely be back for a bratwurst when visiting portland again. Hopefully it will be some time soon!!!

So delicious. These have to be the best wurst in Portland. Juicy, savory, with the right amount of snap from the casing. Add some sauerkraut and mustard best, lunch, ever. You can get a plain brat for just $ 5 and add the kraut for just $.50. Lunch for $ 5.50 and you will be so satisfied. I love the the guys running the place as well, I should get their names considering they know mine… Really friendly, amazing quality, and a great value! Can’t beat it.

These are absolutely the best bratwurst in Portland. All natural and tasty. They have two options — regular brat or veggie brat, then a bunch of toppings you can choose from. I like plain old regular brat with a bit of mustard. They even toast the buns! Who doesn’t love toasted buns?

Seriously, this deserves like 10+ stars! I’ve missed this since I visited Germany years ago and this just made my trip up to Portland. I’m mostly excited he got the garlic just right and he ships. The fact that it’s his father, himself and his son with a family recipe just make it even better! He even let me take a picture with him because I was so excited!!!

we have eaten our share of bratwurst– a fav is the one with the nice mouth feel as you chomp down on that brat! This one really hit the spot and was not too salty but flavorful all around. My hubby chatted up the chef and the secret is some vitamin E thing he puts into his brat for preservatives vs the traditional preservative. I looked at him and holy cow! His face is smooth as a babys butt! I wish they had one in sf so i can eat it all the time and look good like he does! foodie stop must do in pdx. best brat of my life.

Don’t judge a book by it’s cover! So true especially in this instance. The Altengartz food truck is not the prettiest sight around… it could use a fresh coat of paint or a nice wash and wax job, but who cares! Their authentic German bratwursts are the best I’ve ever had in my entire life, AND probably one of the best things you could eat in that huge circus of Portland food trucks in the parking lot. Or even, one of the best foods you can eat in all of Oregon! I was really taken aback at how fresh and delicious their brat was. my knees went weak as I bit into it and got that crisp and clean snap, that all lovers of franks can only understand. This was a culinary revelation, and with such a humble food item as a bratwurst, it was the most surprising. People will travel to Portland for all sorts of reasons. Voodoo donuts, Pittock Mansion, Lan Su Chinese Garden, etcetera, etcetera… I, on the other hand, would go back just for another Altengartz bratwurst! But I may not have to after-all, because apparently these can be ordered on the web( )!! Yes!!! How do you say winning in German??? GEWINNT!!! And, for the visual equivalent:

So, I’ve only tried the Veggie Brat here since I’m vegetarian, but it’s really good. It’s chickpea based(not soy), and I like that. I get it loaded with sauerkraut, caramelized onions, garlic and cheese(no bun since they don’t have a gluten free offering), and it’s delicious.

I am no sausage expert but Altengartz’s bratwurst is definitely great as a snack in between drinking! The bratwurst we got was meaty and juicy. pork and veal filling was good combination and I was glad that my friend insisted to try out what Altengartz offered out off all these other food carts.

Stopped here on a rainy weekday afternoon for a sausage. Staff was friendly and suggested the garlic sausage. Made the order fresh, came out piping hot in a reasonable amount of time. Garlic sausage is packed with flavor without being overpowering. Sausage is moist and topped with some killer grilled onions as well, which put the dish over the top. Only downside was that our bun fell apart halfway through eating. Would try a brat here if the opportunity to revisit happened again. Also, I cannot emphasize how friendly the staff is: lady took my BF’s order even though he was fifty cents short and started making the order, rather than run it on his card. Happily gave her the amount due when I arrived, and she seemed surprised that we remembered.

Hormone free sausages made in OR! Great value and delicious tasting brats! The food carts on 9th and Alder are plentiful, but I always try to make a stop here. My boyfriend grew up in Germany and he thought that they were pretty good. Considering it’s a food cart, I would definitely give it a 4 star review. The value is great, the food tastes delicious, the service is friendly, and the wait isn’t too bad either. Make a stop and enjoy a brat!

In life, there aren’t a lot of things that you get nearly 100% returns on. Requests to go out on dates? Well, that depends on a lot of things, but for someone awkward like me…20%? If you’re one of those cold-calling phone bank people, the percent of people who will actually shell out money to you? Maybe 3%. But this guy gets almost 100% returns on his samples. That’s right – when he offers you one as you walk by, try to say no to buying one after eating your sample. I dare you. I didn’t even want a brat. I don’t regularly eat brats. I think the last time I ate one was over 5 years ago.(I SHOULD eat them more often… that’s going on my to-do list!) But at the time, it wasn’t even a remote possibility… until I tried that little slice of heaven. See, the spice mixture is spot on. It has that essential sausage snap but is lovely and light on the inside. And when it’s on a bun with grilled sauerkraut on it, and three different kinds of mustard? It just can’t be beat. I’ve never had a better brat.
