Eh… The restaurant has a nice view if you choose to eat outside. The food was nothing special.

Perfect spot for lunch while driving the Texas coast. Patio overlooks bay. Plentiful fried shrimp plate contained more shrimp than I could finish and that never happens. Cold beer. Restaurant is situated amongst all the fishermen and fresh seafood markets seems very legitimate. A sweet place to while away the afternoon.

Good home cooking. Really good chicken fried steak and stuffed crab. Very nice salad bar. Good service, nice daily specials, and very reasonable prices.

Went by for lunch today and the special was delicious… fish and shrimp. Service was great as well. We have eaten here several times and all were good fresh and not greasy We highly recommend it.

We were our waiter’s first table, ever. He did a decent job; tried very hard to please. The kitchen evidently has no clue what ‘gluten free’ means. We had been recommended to this establishment by the county museum’s curator, who told us that we should sit outside so we could get a great view of the bay. Unfortunately a group of people were allowed to take all of the chairs, even though they didn’t use them all, effectively keeping others from using the 4 unused outdoor tables. Our waiter was the highlight of the experience.

I don’t know why I have any expectations at all when dining here in Port Lavaca. This used to be a bar & grill called Tropics, so I am already familiar with the views and blah blah blah. Nothing new when I walked in, same tired tables, same tired floors, and same filthy windows overlooking Lavaca Bay. A new SUBTRACTION is they have closed the bar, so if you are looking for a beer, mixed drink, or glass of wine with your dinner you better look elsewhere. As I walked to my table I looked over what they called a salad bar which didn’t look too badly. Typical fixings for iceberg lettuce and four dressings to choose from. It was self seating when I arrived around 4:45, and the waitress(I don’t know her name because she never introduced herself) took my drink order and gave me a few minutes to look over the menu. For Port Lavaca, it’s an average size menu, but for anywhere else it’s sorta small. I settled on the Seafood Platter($ 21.99), and when she arrived to take my order I asked what the fish was on the platter and she said it was catfish. I am no fan of that garbage fish, so my alternative entrée was the Tilapia dinner($ 17.99). Guess what, I was told that it would be catfish as well! I showed her the menu where it clearly stated«Tilapia» and she said they were out. ALLLLLLLLLLLLLrighty then! I ended up going with the Shrimp dinner($ 18.99) and chose to have them grilled rather than fried and a baked potato, Texas toast, and one trip to the salad bar. The salad was pretty much what I expected; just ok. By the time I cleared my plate, my entrée was delivered steaming hot. I knew I was in for trouble when I began to «make» my baked potato. That sucker was DRY! The only moisture it had was AFTER I smothered it in butter and sour cream. The shrimp, well there was a lot of it; like a mound of it. The size was maybe 31 – 35 or so, not what I was expecting, and I couldn’t see ANY grill marks on it, let along figure out how they could have grilled such small de-veined shrimp. So I pinched the tail off one and popped it into my mouth. I don’t think I have ever had«mushy» shrimp, but that’s the best way to describe it as well as completely lacking in seasoning. I grabbed a piece of Texas toast to try and help the shrimp down. People, it’s called toast because it is toasted whether in a toaster or on a flat top, but this was more like browned bread. Yeah, it was awesome. Long story short, I ended up eating about half of the baked(probably yesterday’s or the day before) potato and maybe a total of five shrimp before flagging down my waitress and asking where the men’s room was. Yup, you guessed it, I got sick and what I had eaten came right back up. The only bright side of this dining experience was the waitress didn’t make me pay even though I had wallet in had at the register. I will not be back and would not recommend this establishment to anyone. There are other alternatives in Port Lavaca for seafood, just none of them have the view Mary’s Too has.
