Magic Nail & Hair

My friend swears by this place, so I decided to check it out. Located in an unassuming mini strip mall next to a little café and flower shop, it’s not fancy but has a certain charm. I loved the sense local community and they were playing some fun old school music. It’s definitely not a nail sweat shop where they are getting you in and out. Linda who does my friends nails, was very gracious and did a great job on my nails. I didn’t feel rushed at all and took my time drying and finished my reading.

Michael is amazing. He knows hair and he takes time to analyze yours for the most flattering cut and shape and is honest about what will work. Even after blow-​drying he took time to further perfect the way my hair was laying on one side when dry so that it would more naturally fall into place. Awesome! Loved my cut and it was the best value I’ve found, The salon is comfortable, simple, tucked in a strip mall next to a fitness gym and coffee shop. It’s nice when the door is open to let in the sun and ocean breeze. I can’t say enough good things, I felt like I had a high-​end hairstyle for a fraction of the price.

Although, the place could use a little upgrade to spa chairs, other than that — the salon is clean. Linda is very friendly, she worked hard on my feet. Overall — I feel clean and like a princess after I’m done. I’d suggest a few more nail polish colors to choose from. More Essie and OPI since they last a little longer. Fees are very reasonable, I was in and out of the salon in no time. This is a hidden gem in PDR.

I have lived in Playa for 30 years and only just found this place. I loved it. Great customer service, great prices and quality manicure.

This is by far not a fancy shop-​did I say by far? But I don’t care, it’s been over 20 years since my first Michael style and I’ve never had one complaint.
The shop manager, My, is a doll and I feel like she’s become family as we’ve chatted all these years during my pedicures, manicures, acrylics (back in the day), waxing, etc.
Although there are plenty of trashy gossip mags there too if you prefer that to a chat. :-)

I just got back home from my first time here, and it is by far the BEST hair experience I have ever had! Michael is outstanding and I can’t wait to go back. My husband will also be going here. Truly Woohoo! As good as it gets!!! :))

Michael is a genius for hair. For $ 85 I got a fabulous hair conditioning treatment, hair cute AND style, gel french mani and a pedi. Service was slow because they were busy, but they apologized and more than made up for it with their warmth, kindness and positive energy. I could tell I mattered to them and wasn’t just a number to rush through. The hair cut is amazing and my hair is soft/​revived. The pedi is great. The gel mani wasn’t the best I’ve had, but they were receptive and tried to make me happy. (I usually do gel manis at home anyways with an LED light… it’s just when I need french that I venture out). Overall, I felt like they cared and paid attention to detail. This is my new salon.

Magic is not the right word for his salon as magic is all an illusion. He is the real deal. If you are judging a book by its cover, you would high tail it out of there. So glad that I stayed cause he did things to my hair other pricey hair dressers only promised they would do.

I live up the street and wanted to walk to get my nails done. I called and the lady said they could take me in ten minutes. I realized they were already open an hour after closing, cool! Showed up and I only waited 3 minutes. The Mani/​Pedi was just over an hour, which I felt was refreshign since I typically feel like inexpensive places rush you in and out of the door!
I can’t complain about a $ 23 mani/​pedi but here are a few things that bugged me, resulting in 4 stars: cash only (I had to walk to a liqueur store at dark to go to an ATM after nails were done since I was not aware until they asked me to pay…), there was club music and some tacky décor (Dead Flowers and some window paintings for VDay) that did not create a serene environment, the lady talked on her cell phone while she did her nails (I work in the service industry– this is not acceptable), and a very limited polish selection.
I’ll go back but it wouldn’t be my first choice, nor would I go if I were looking for the «spa» atmosphere.

Let me preface this review by saying that I dread getting haircuts… I feel like I end up spending a lot of money on a cut that I don’t like… and I have been to a lot of salons in west la!
I live in playa and drive by Magic all the time, and after reading a couple good reviews, I figured I try my luck. I am soo glad I did!
Michael is amazing! I told him to just trim the length and give me long layers that framed my face and blends with my hair, and that is EXACTLY what i got! The haircut is sexy, modern and full of volume! He is super fast, very skilled, and a really nice guy! I will definitely be coming back and recommending him to all of my friends.

I’ve been going to this place for over 5 years now to get my hair done… Michael is amazing!!! He does a lot of the local’s hair and beyond. Very talented.
