We had a terrific lunch here for a party of 11. The food is affordable and delicious. We had great service and even the hostess checked on us to make sue we were well taken care of. Loved it. The lunch specials were so affordable. Fish and chips is awesome.

I had heard great things about this place and my fiancé and I like to try new places frequently, so we stopped in. Was greeted immediately, we were sat in a booth far from the front door. This time of year I like to be furthest from the door so we aren’t constantly cold from the door opening, but unfortunately it was still very chilly(I’m normally never cold). Our waitress didn’t greet us until we had looked at the entire menu and made our appetizer and dinner selection. I ordered the breadsticks and cheese for an appetizer($ 3.99 on the menu). My fiancé paid immediately without looking the check over and as we were about to leave I noticed we were charged $ 6.99 for my appetizer. Our waitress never came back for us to tell her of the mistake and frankly I was so cold I just wanted to get in our car to warm up. On the way out I looked at the specials board and saw that the breadsticks were on special for $ 2.99. So they actually were a dollar cheaper than the menu but somehow we were charged $ 6.99. Definitely not worth the drive back, and the food was just«ok». The food was hot and came exactly how we ordered it and our appetizer and food was nicely spaced out which is why I still gave this restaurant 3 stars.

I’m a firm believer in basing my reviews relative to the establishment. Is this place a foodie paradise? No. If that’s what you’re looking for, move on. Can you find a good meal here in a comfortable environment, you bet. What you get with a visit to the Coachmen is a visit to a local establishment that is basically a Plainfield institution. Before the days that Exit 66 was built up with a dozen hotels, gas stations, & chain restaurants, the Coachman stood proud as one of the few locally-owned, «sit-down» restaurants & bars in the area. Yes, walking in today you might find it a bit dark & dated. But to me, that nostalgia is part of the charm. It’s a throw-back to family dinners after school events, or hanging with high school friends when home visiting from college. It’s also one of the few local places to catch live music outside during the summers, when Indiana weather is being kind. While I think the menu here is a bit larger than it should be, and that the food would improve if they’d limit the menu a bit, basically everyone can find something to eat here(except for maybe super-vigilant Vegans). For me, I’ve been ordering the same thing here since the mid-1990’s. While being an adventurous eater, sometimes you don’t mess with a good thing. When going to the Coachman, I always go after 5:00pm. 5:00pm on everyday of the week means the fresh prime rib is ready. My standard order is a prime rib sandwich(rare) with fries, with a cup of au jus on the side & horseradish. It’s basically the best«French Dip that’s not actually a French Dip» in town. If you go before 5:00pm & you order a Prime Rib sandwich, it will most likely be made with the previous day’s prime rib. This is perfectly fine if you like your meat at Medium or higher… but for a rare-beef-eater, that’s just a crime against a cow. Advanced warning, sometimes the service can be hit-or-miss. Sometimes(like our most recent visit last week) it is excellent. Other times, you will be getting up to pour yourself a refill on your tea from the drink service station because your waitress went AWOL. It seems like the last few visits have been better, so maybe they are starting to get a grip on the staffing situation. Overall, if you’re looking to spend money & keep it locally, and have a darn good beef sandwich, you should check out the Coachman.

We actually went to Plainfield to try a new to us sushi restaurant a friend recommended. Because it was closed, we decided to walk across the parking lot and try The Coachmen. I had never been there(passed it a hundred times) and love trying new restaurants. Even ones that have been around for decades. We loved our sampler appetizer platter. Everything on it was awesome. My fiancé had the grouper which he said was really good. I had a salad and French Onion soup which wasn’t bad at all. The service was very quick and friendly. Perfect for lunch!

I really like this place. This is a family-owned place. The staff makes newcomers welcomed to a place that has a long list of regulars. I try to stop in when I am in town. A true meat&potato lover’s place. The prime rib and steaks melt in your mouth. The sides are fresh, you feel like you are at home. Good value. Great place for a beer and watching the game.

This is one of my favorite spots to take clients for lunch when I’m out in Plainfield. Now, the décor is super date. When you walk in its almost like walking back in time, but this nostalgic feel adds to the country charm of this place. If you’re looking for fancy food and exotic menu choices, look somewhere else. This place doesn’t have them. This place does have good Hoosier food at reasonable prices. We normally start off with the buffalo wings. We get the LP style(named after the owner) which are basically just extra crispy wings. Their hot wings are awesome and their teriyaki are good. I’m a sucker for a pork tenderloin sandwich. I’ve had a lot of them in my time but this place makes one of my favorites. The breeding is crispy and well seasoned but the pork is thick enough that you know what kind of meat it is. I hate it when a tenderloin just tastes like fried. It comes with the normal fixings. I personally omit nothing but that’s just me. The sandwich is bigger than the bun by far so you have to cut off a inch and a half long slice just to make it fit. Now with all this high praise you’d think I would have rated it higher. The real problem this place has is the service. It’s not always bad by any means but it’s not consistent. I’ve been here for a lunch that took over an hour and a half. That’s fine sometimes but when you’re taking clients that have a one hour lunch you have to be careful. I haven’t been here in the evenings so my review only covers lunch. Service isn’t perfect but they make an outstanding tenderloin sandwich.

Meh food, sub par service, overpriced, dated… Met the owner and he’s a bit of a trip.

Never been here before, but was in the area while heading back home(which was an hour away). Knew nothing about the restaurant prior to our stop — but did get some info from Unilocal(which helped). Overall, very pleased. The service was good. The prices a little higher(not too bad) than similar restaurants, however, the portions were good and the food tasted great. Strongly recommend.

I loathe this place. The first time we went the food was just plain bad. Second time, we decided to give it another try. Ordered the patty melt which is a slab of disgusting meat on white bread. Nothing else on it. Shouldn’t it have onions or a sauce or something? We were seated in a random corner by ourselves near the hostess stand. We listened to the owner scream at her employees the entire night. Our waiter was even embarrassed by the screaming. I don’t know why went back a third, but we did. We wanted to sit outside because it was a beautiful day and they have some of the only outside seating on the westside. We brought our infant son — the hostess quickly told us «no kids outside». We turned around and left. I wish this place would go under and be taken over by something else. It has a great location just horrible food and service.

Parking lot was super full so I had to try it out. Excellent customer service. Food was good but not great. Prices are reasonable and overall I had a good experience.

Had reservations for our party of 8. We were seated in a timely manner… and there we sat, and sat, and sat. The food was medicore – not as good as Applebees. The price was more in line with a steak house. The service was not good at all. They all acted like they didn’t want to be there and the serving skills were definitely lacking. $ 80 bill for two bad steaks, a sweet potato, and a limp salad — no drinks at all. Won’t be back.

Traveler, first visit, food was good & service was fine. Salmon, salad, baked potato. Staff was good not great. Putting together silverware next to front door, was a negative.

«Mexican Chili» was neither mexican nor chili. Prime rib sandwich was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike prime rib. The lingering impression to walk away with is «inoffensive». Which is not really what I’m looking for for $ 30. Take your culinarily boring Moms and Aunts. It’s very safe.

We came in at around 8pm. It took probably 5 minutes to even be greeted by a waitress — and the restaurant was not busy at all. Finally, we got our drinks and appetizers ordered — they came out fine… Then we ordered our food. I ordered a loaded baked potato which looked to have been sitting under a warmer all day. My dad’s «special» of the day was pan fried walleye filet — which when it came out was LOADED with bones. Can someone please explain to the chef the meaning of filet? K. Thanks. When he sends it back, it takes a good 15 minutes longer to get his burger that he traded it out for. The management did nothing to compensate him for having poor service or improperly prepared food. I absolutely won’t be back.

I came here on a Monday night with my friends. Went to the bar and got a beer and the black chicken Alfredo and salad. It was 20 times better than olive garden. It’s very home like and great service it’s owned by a family. It has been running since 1950 I would go back again.

Never again! Food was great! But it was obvious neither the hostess nor the waitress wanted to be there. We had to ask for everything that was supposed to be included on the menu and other than delivering the food we never saw our waitress except when it was time to pay. I can go to McDonald’s and get better service than this!

Housed in an unobtrusive building, Coachman is a good bet for lunch. The entrance is like many ‘dinner’ houses. Walking in, the interior is wood paneling with well worn carpet. The walls are festooned with pictures and country bling. Let’s talk about potato salad. Criteria: — Big chunks of potato — Small dice of onion and celery — Mayo and mustard Couldn’t detect any egg, but that’s ok. Softly seasoned and easy to eat. Potato salad, for me, has to be creamy. This hit the mark. It has to be made here. A commercial product wouldn’t come close to this. Recommend getting the potato salad over fries! Patty melt — Butter crisped rye bread, swiss, grilled onions and patty o’ meat. The patty was crispified, but still juicy and the onions were abundant. Pretty, darn good. Make sure to hit it with some pepper and splash some mustard in there. Mustard bottle was crusty — Each person asked about my day and thanked me for coming. +

We had an early lunch(11:30) to beat the crowd at the Coachman’s and had a good experience as usual. Prices are reasonable; food is good and fairly consistent with a cozy atmosphere. We had excellent service and our waiter was very prompt and helpful. We’ve eaten here for years and appreciate we’re supporting an independent and local business with a friendly staff. We would recommend adding more description to the menu items other than just the name on some of the entrees. Salads descriptions are especially bad and server has to answer more questions than necessary, especially for food allergies. I ordered the Reuben and substituted onion rings for the fries(additional fee of course). Sandwich was good; only thing was one side of bread had steamed while on plate and became little soggy. Onion rings cooked perfectly and not excessively greasy. Fish and Chips were medium size, flaky fish pieces and again not over greasy or overcooked. Comment was” it was okay”. What you would expect from a local pub. Outdoor patio is always nice in summer if you prefer sitting outdoors and don’t have a problem with outdoor elements(pesky little flying critters). I love the sunshine but my husband tolerates the flies for me.
