The only saving grace of this dump is that it’s close. While other reviewers said the prices were reasonable, I found them a bit on the high side. Fresh fruit and veggies? Forget it. It looks like this is where apples and carrots go after they’ve gotten too old and nasty for other stores. Most of their food is old. I’ve bought grapes, bread, and other items there that grew mold after just a couple days. Blame me if you like, but the stuff I buy 20 miles away seems to last a good long time, and it has to travel 20 extra miles in the desert heat. Checking out takes a while… it’s nice to have an Iphone I can play games on while waiting for the checker to fiddle around with whatever the guy in front of me is trying to pay with. They’re not open 24 hours, so they do tend to get mobbed during open hours, making the wait even longer. The parking lot is a nightmare, though that has more to do with the locals than the staff. I don’t go there unless I absolutely have to, and usually it’s just to use the ATM and Red Box. UPDATE03/15/2015 I was in there a couple weeks ago to pick up those tiny little tangerines, called Cuties. I saw some of them rotting right there in the store. Evidently this is something their managers feel customers want.

Stater Bros is what I’ve come to expect from grocery stores — organized, clean, and varied without being a specialty shop. They’ve got just about everything you need to live the basics of life, minus furniture and appliances. The staff is mostly friendly, too, though they often get distracted and end up ignoring customers. A bit of bummer, but hey, it’s a small town. Of course they’re focused on their lives and friends — they’re people, not automatons.

This store is horrible. The only reason I shop there is because the prices are reasonable and it has a decent selection. Customer service is terrible. Baggers/bag boys look at you like you’re crazy when you ask for help to your car– this happened to an elderly family member of mine. Checkers don’t even acknowledge you when you are standing right in front of them. They are too busy talking to their fellow employees about their weekend and evening plans. Like I said, I feel like I have no choice shopping there because of where I live. But this Stater Bros needs an employee and customer service overhaul!

I like Stater Bros in general, but this is the worst Stater Bros anywhere. I went there last night(Friday) around 7:15 and it was mobbed… as usual. There were only 2 checkers open and there were something like 15 people in each line. I had two items, and no express lane was open. There were plenty of employees milling about, but only 2 checkers apparently. I know Stater Bros doesn’t care, but they lost my business. I put down my two items and left. I’ve lived in Phelan for about 8 years now and right from the get go, I knew this Stater Bros was not going to work for me. As another reviewer wrote, not only is it grungy and unspacious, with unfriendly checkers, and rude, pushy customers(probably because it’s always so crowded), it is always, always *mobbed* unless you get there at 6:00 a.m.(Why doesn’t some other grocer see all the money to be made here and come in and set up shop?) And, instead of doing their job and giving the customer their undivided attention, the checkers always seems to be having loud personal conversations with other checkers or the baggers, and I’m sorry but that’s just not acceptable. Unfortunately, since Stater Bros is the only market in town, I’m occasionally forced to come here for the few things I forgot to get elsewhere, and it’s almost always an unpleasant experience, if only because of the hordes. In general I prefer to drive the extra 15 or 20 minutes to Target or even WalMart in Victorville where at least it’s spacious and clean and the employees don’t have personal conversations with each other while they’re waiting on you.

Stater Bros is a great Market. They always seem to have everything I need(well stocked shelves) and the staff are friendly. The meat/seafood section could smell a little bit fresher, but the rest of the store seems to be always clean.

The saving grace of this Stater Bros is that they have good prices, are always pretty well stocked, and there are a few nice people working there. They only get two stars because the store feels older than dirt, it looks grungy, and there are a lot of very grumpy people working and shopping there. I try to avoid shopping here, but since it’s the only option in town, sometimes it’s unavoidable.

I don’t understand the negative reviews… I’ve been coming here for over 20 years and it’s always served me well, and in fact better than many places in LA where I live now.
