Great place to visit and tour a Endicott Period costal fortification. Fortifications range from reconstructed to stabilized and a walking tour allows both inside and xterm or access to the works. At the time the technology in these installations was light years beyond that in the neighboring countryside. The remaining buildings are a fraction of what was present when each of these sites were a miniature city. Amenities are few so bring what you need to eat, snack or drink. Pay a visit to the adjoining Finns Point National Cemetery and pay tribute to our decease veterans as well as view several Nazi graves. The Caretakers House is the site of one of the Gay gone bad Andrew Cunanan’s spree killings before he went on to kill Gianni Versace in Miami.

I must advise that if you’re going to explore this park to watch your step; a portion is still owned by the military and is under heavy surveillance. It was a bit weird to be strolling along and suddenly see gates marked with warnings against trespassing. That being said, if you stick close to the river it shouldn’t be an issue. This is a lovely looking area, made oddly more fascinating by the nuclear smokestacks that are within eyesight on the river. On the off season you can walk out on to the ferry dock and get a full view of the Delaware River in all it’s glory, if you can call it that. The paths in this park aren’t very long, but it is a pleasant stroll from one end to the other. It’s also a very dog friendly park, so I felt very out of the loop being the only person without a dog on a leash the day I went! The old gun batteries are interesting and hauntingly beautiful in the way that abandoned man-made structures usually are. Some portions are in greater disrepair than others, but the majority seem safe enough for exploring. If you’re a history buff this would be a great way to spend an afternoon. Fort Mott is not your average park, and it’s not even your average historical site. There’s something about it that sticks with you. I found my mind wandering back to the landscape I encountered there in the week after my visit. Even though I never felt in danger, there’s something a little unsettling about this place. That, as well as it’s short trails, are what keep it from getting a perfect score from me. However, if you’re in the area, I do recommend stopping by. At the very least you’ll get a history lesson.

Another State of NJ Heritage Site. A Spanish American era Endicott period fort for the defense of the Delaware River. The batteries are well preserved with ample interpretive signs and a walking tour. There’s a riverfront trail connecting the fort to the military cemetery where confederate POWs from Fort Delaware are buried. The grounds are well maintained. Many walkers, joggers and bike riders on the bike trail. Gorgeous views. Small museum store and inside display. An interesting chunk of history.

I love Fort Mott! It’s very peaceful and a great place to walk around! It’s right by the water and there is a little sand area that you can walk along as long as it’s not high tide. A great place to take pictures too. It’s a very historic site with tidbits of information as you walk around. There are trails in the woods and trails around the underground bunkers. I go many times in the spring/summer with friends. The next best thing to the beauty is the price, free!
