It may be easy to dismiss Imageville as a so-called«tourist stop.» But that’s more a reflection of an ignorant eye rather than what the place really is, a photo-fabulous candy store FOR the eye! Certainly you get photographer Gary Dorothy’s personal and unique perspective on Palm Springs proper, but once you invest some time inside the mind of Mr. Dorothy, you realize he’s part artist, part journalist, part dropper of acid, part child, and part rebel! I mean who hires a helicopter in the wee off-hours, just to catch a 26 foot sculpture of Marilyn Monroe waking up to greet her fans? Who, under threat of Secret Service agents climbs a tree in 112 degree summer desert heat to catch the belly of Air Force One? Who walks Time Square in the middle of a storm to catch the remnants of a cheap black umbrella covered in consumeristic neon light? Who takes a Ferris Wheel ride to record exclusive images of 10,000 shirtless gay men, tea-dancing at one of the planets biggest music events? And after all is said and done, who sits, satisfied with nothing but an iconic sock-monkey, a white backdrop, and a roll of film? Gary Dorothy, that’s who. So weather your«in Kansas anymore» or not, visit Imageville and get your imagination on!

When I first moved to Palm Springs, I took notice of the large beautiful photos in the window of Imageville. When I finally went in, I was surprised to learn that they are all taken by the owner(Gary Dorothy). Hundreds, maybe thousands, of them — each one interesting in it’s own way — taken by same guy. Wow. Many of the photos are taken in and around Palm Springs, but there are some other that are from Gary’s travels. Loving Palm Springs as I do, it’s fun to see it through Gary’s eyes. He has such a fine eye for detail and color, and his photos are the kind of thing that each time I look at a photo I’ve seen before, I notice something new. Words can’t really express how good the photos are. If you are a fan of photography, go check it out.

When I first visited Palm Springs a few years back I loved and wanted a photo of the old Rancho Mirage Car Wash sign with the elephant on it. I walked by Imageville and saw numerous iterations of it through the window and was stunned by the breadth of the gallery. Gary, the owner, has a perspective to his photos that resonated with me. He also happens to be a super nice guy who took time to understand what my needs were, and to explain the«back story» behind the images I liked. I have gone to the shop several times since then and learn a bit more about Palm Springs each time I see one of his images and what it represents. He also has photographs of other areas outside of the desert as well. I would put Imageville on the ‘must see’ list if you are going to be in Downtown Palm Springs. Definitely worth the trip.

On a stroll with my doggie, Gary Dorothy saw me gazing at his photographs in the display window and came to the doorway to chat… His artistic eye is keen and his desert images are intriguing and inspiring. And this man is so friendly, welcoming me to town, offering a few interesting and helpful pointers about life here. He didn’t roll out the sales spiel too much(his charm goes a long way), he didn’t have to. His photos speak for themselves. I couldn’t resist buying an oh-so-cool shot of Joshua Tree at sunrise for our new house! Now, I need to go out to JT at sunrise to experience that for myself… And if you’re a dog lover like me, ask to see the shots of his doggies(if they’re not on display.)

The guy takes great photos. Nearly every image is fun and artistic and gallery worthy. He’s also friendly and happy to chat or answer questions. His prices are a bit high, but generally worth it for the quality of the product. I just wish art would sometimes go on sale!

When in Palm Springs, visit Imageville for art that is beautiful, collectible and affordable. Imageville features the incredible photography of artist/proprietor Gary Dorothy. I first encountered IMAGEVILLE gallery years ago while walking along Indian Canyon with my corgi and, with interest, peaked into the windows of this amazing gallery. Gary opened the door and welcomed both me and my pet inside! I’ve since noticed that IMAGEVILLE is very dog-friendly and I’ve been back many times to enjoy Gary’s masterful eye and technique presented in his photos of Palm Springs, California, and beyond. I’ve never felt any pressure, or encountered any pitch to buy anything(I do love what I have purchased, though!). Gary truly seems pleased just to have people stop in and enjoy his work. As an amateur photographer, I am definitely impressed(and humbled) by Gary Dorothy’s photography. Check it out!
