I was on the fence about posting a review because I don’t want too many tourists, like myself, to find this gem but I couldn’t resist! We went here 2 days in a row and I am hoping to stop in at least one more time before our trip is over. The local vibe of this place was part of the appeal for us. Everyone was friendly and helpful. We loved all the sandwiches and I may be addicted to the sourdough pancakes. They had a selection of pastries that rotate daily and I had to restrain myself from trying all of them. This is a must try if you are in the area!

The food is very good most days, bakery n bread is fresh, coffee hot, folks/service is good. Can be a bit interesting weaving your way through the deadlocked unshowered, white hippies who congregate in droves smoking pot in the parking lot. But for the most part they don’t panhandle. that’s the beauty of Hawaii the aina is so rich that the homeless don’t need as much help as other places. They love the island and in turn it feeds them. welcome to pahoa

Insanely good food and coffee. We had the vegan bagel, blueberry scone and quiche. They were all off the hook good! They sell fresh made bread as well and they look amazing. That’s next on my list to try. People are relaxed and are actually talking to each other instead of staring at laptops with headphones on like your typical coffee shop. Love this place. Highly recommended.

Delicious house made baked goods; scones, muffins, cinnamon roles, english muffins… all delicious! Great coffee, and oh! the Tin Shack Chai… mmmm! Down to earth staff, local vibe.

Great little place, organic products, great coffee, funky little hippie place. Fresh baked bread, they have an excellent rye. I have been to all places in Pahoa to eat and thus by far is the best. They close a 2 or 3 so no dinner opportunities.

Best coffee in Puna! Great baked goods, home baked gluten free bread — fun relaxed atmosphere. Do not go here if you are expecting a Sterile Starbucks experience. But if you want to see a fun eclectic local crowd, enjoy a great breakfast, and delicious coffee — this is the place!

Don’t understand the negative reviews… I guess if you are looking for an antiseptic and soul-less coffee chain, bleach scrubbed and uniformed, then go to Starbucks in Kona. Better yet, stay home in the suburbs, because you might not ever get the magic of a place The Tin Shack Bakery in Pahoa, where one whole wall is open to the Puna breeze, and the friendly and attentive staff are serving the best coffee this old mainland hack has found in Puna. Granted, this is only my third time to Puna, and I’m by no means an expert on the local coffee shops, but the Pesto Okinawan Eggs Benedict, with steamed local purple sweet potatoes, makes this place a destination for me, a 40 year veteran of serving in the trenches of many a restaurant brunch kitchen. Consistently excellent espresso drinks, no matter who is pulling the shots. Fresh house– baked breads, a clean bathroom, free Wi-Fi, decent parking, and an easygoing local vibe make the Tin Shack Bakery a reason to come in to town.

We really enjoyed our meal & coffee here! GETTHEPANCAKES!!! The staff was also super friendly and welcoming. Being visitors in Pahoa-places don’t always have that inviting feel, so we really appreciated the welcoming atmosphere. The food took a long while to arrive and my husbands came out a few minutes before mine, but overall a nice experience.

My favorite coffee shop/breakfast spot on the Big Island. Been here 6 or 7 times. Dave makes a great cappuccino. Their baked goods look incredible, but I’m not eating carbs. I get the«Big Boss», w/o sauce and extra veggies. I love Wednesday mornings when an accomplished musician plays live classical guitar.

Relax with some primo coffee drinks, indulge in the fresh, hearty food, and enjoy the open-air atmosphere and charming staff. Tin Shack also offers an up close and personal view of the Pahoa microcosm, with a solid contingent of new age hippies, a smattering of conspiracy theorist old timers, a daily folk serenade by the same angel-voiced lady, and a few burner kids. It’s a very welcoming environment, so tourists, don’t be afraid to venture off main street and check out the local vibe. Highlights are the sourdough pancakes(try them with blueberries!), the fresh baked bread, and of course, the clean flushing toilet.

What a wonderful bakery! Tasty bread, great eggs Benedict, and a hilarious + fantastic staff. My fiancé kept saying ‘they were SO nice!’ as we drove away. They invited us back for local live music later in the evening. And they just seemed like they were both happy to be there and happy to have us there. Plenty of seating, eclectic tables, and an open air atmosphere even indoors. Just really good people and good food in a good place. Note — you can’t see it from the main road, so be sure to not miss the turn.

One word, Spudnuts. Mind blowing donut-esc experience and once they put the icing over the top, game over. Awesome coffee to go with it makes this the perfect complete experience. Can’t wait to go back!!!

This place is severely overrated. Don’t buy into the hype. We were excited to try this place after reading reviews but it was not good at all. Pastries and cinnamon rolls look delicious but none were good. Cinnamon rolls were dry and cold and did not have enough icing. Same can be said for the potato pastry. Chi latte was $ 4.25 and so spicy I could not drink it and had to throw it away. Cooler where they keep most cakes and pastries has one side that is open which means flies get in and can be found sitting on the cakes, gross and unsanitary. Don’t waste your time on this mediocre bakery.

Outstanding pastries, espresso drinks, and opens early, which is so great for families from the mainland whose kids insist on waking before dawn, due to the time change! It would be nice if they picked up a high chair for little customers. We went two mornings in a row and enjoyed the quiche, bagel dogs, cinnamon rolls, scones, and lattes.

We took the eggs Benedict pesto okinawan, and the eggs Benedict florentine. Both were great, although the Okinawan was more unique. A very interesting mix of tastes(or has sweet potato in it!) I also took a chocolate chip cookie for dessert, that was a disappointment. Just stick with the breakfast foods I guess!

On our hosts recommendation, we went to Tin Shack for breakfast. We went everyday we were in Pahoa after that. Breakfast sandwiches on way to Volcano and eggs Benedict on mornings we had time to sit and eat. Hollandaise sauce is perfectly light and citrusy. Bacon done well. Jalapeño cheddar bagel was my personal fave. The baked goods looked delicious too and prices are reasonable. Two days back on the Kona side and it’s one of the big reasons I wish I was still in Pahoa.

I love their fresh baked bread and it’s becoming a tradition for me to go in weekly for a loaf of purple sweet potato bread!

Rolled up to this place in our bright yellow convertible Camaro and have never felt more out of place — this is a true local establishment in Pahoa. The clientele inside on a weekday morning featured no obvious tourists other than myself and the parking lot of full of cars that had clearly spent some time on the island. We only got coffee, but it was exceptional — the iced coffee was great! Would certainly come back here again(maybe in a less conspicuous automobile).

Pretty awesome place. GF German Chocolate cake was pretty awesome. Lots of specialty items and java based drinks. Tin Shack Kambucha, breads, floats, milk shakes and smoothies. Literally in a tin shack which looks like it may have been in an old garage turned bakery. Filled with locals on laptops, eclectic young ‘free’ crowd that gives the town it’s fantastic vibe. Sign up for songwriters and poets open mike for back in April but it wouldn’t surprise me if it continues on.

Wir sind per Zufall auf die«bakery» gestossen und werden wieder kommen: Nettes und sehr hilfsbereites Team, super-feine Sandwiches und süsse Teilchen. In jedem Fall eine Empfehlung.
