The Lava Beds Bed and Breakfast was fantastic! The location is amazing, the house is beautiful, and David and Charlene are two of the nicest folks around. The house was built by David and Charlene, and is «off the grid.» We never had to worry about conserving electricity or water as their solar panels, wind turbine, and rainwater cistern provided plenty. Our room and bathroom were perfectly clean and very comfortable. David is an expert on the volcanic activity in the area and was kind enough to take us on a walk over some of the more recent lava flows. The highlight of the hike was a very secluded black-sand beach. It was a unique way to learn about how the lava flows have affected the locals, something you don’t hear about at the park. Overall, it was a great way to experience the southeast coast of Hawaii, and it was a welcome change from some of the less personable hotels and B&Bs we’ve stayed at on the island.

We stayed for just one night and wished we could have stayed longer. The location, though admittedly unique, was fantastic. David our host is a gem and visiting with him for the duration of our stay was a real treat. I have to say I was a little anxious about staying so close to the active lava flow, but it was absolutely the best experience. We could see the flow from the deck and at night the active areas were lit up on the pali(hillside) and on the flats in front of us. We were completely safe and experiencing one of the most amazing feats of nature… creation of new land. David took us on a lava hike in the morning and we were within just a few feet of the flow. All this within ½ mile of his home. The tour is not included with the room rate, but is well worth it. David is a special guy and makes the whole experience of staying there even better. We highly highly highly recommend it.
