The chicken is good. The is not as goods as mine. The mashed potatoes are not as good as my wife’s. The gravy, is something special. You can also skip a meal before going here. You will not leave hunger.

Fried chicken! Ok, I’ll say more… this place is great for a large family dinner. Chicken fried whatever(chicken, steak, etc) is oh so good — I especially loved the chicken fried chicken with brown gravy and the traditional sides of mashed potatoes and green beans. YUM! We had a huge table for six adults and two children with everything(other than your main choice) served family style on a turntable. It was great fun, we had a fabulous waitress who felt like family, and then she brought out the cinnamon rolls… Oh dear! They are hot, delicious and dangerous!!! Fun was had. We especially liked watching our granddaughter get confused with cut up pieces of chicken vs cinnamon roll — you can guess which one she put back! LOL.

The Fervor of Stroud’s is palpable. What I’ve heard from the average passerby is, «If you want home cookin’, stop into Stroud’s and pick up some southern delicacy.» We sat and waited, hungry — near the fireplace — with a throng of other hungry patrons, awaiting our chance to try what all the fuss was about. After forty minutes of appetizing swaths wafting by, we were seated — standard operating wait time, as I understand. The food is overpriced, greasy, and lacking southern flavor. Anyone that has actually tried southern cuisine in the south knows, it has everything French going for it — that which is so good and bad for you: Salt, butter, fat, crispy skin, the dangerous works. When you fry something, you’ve went right to the nuclear option, so what comes out the other end better taste incredible — frying in fat is half your battle won. I expected to taste true magnificence, and settle for great chicken — at those prices. Everything just kind of sings one flat note of average, humming you quietly away from hungry — quite boring. We tried a sampling of the best they had to offer, and were left with a take-home box of sadness, and a nearly $ 60 bill for two. The wait staff is odd as well, seemingly all related in some way, and too homely for my taste. I felt both at home at a truck stop, while concurrently eating chicken in the back of a moonshiner’s cabin. I don’t think I will return; that’s quite enough Stroud’s for a while.

The last time I was at Strouds they were still open on 85th so it’s been years. We had been talking about going to the new OP location for awhile and decided to go the carry out route. I’m being generous giving this two stars. The sides were great as always and who can argue with warm cinnamon rolls. My husband’s grilled pork chop was ok but quite a bit smaller than we remembered. But my chicken breast? UCK. I’m not even sure it was a chicken breast and if it was I’ve never seen one like it before. It was so tough I couldn’t even cut it… struggled even with a knife. And it was gray not white and if it was bone in… not sure where the bones were. Making me sick just describing it. Needless to say that was $ 16 down the drain. I won’t go back to this location anytime in the near future. What a disappointment.

Really good fried chicken! Prolly best to purchase, without being ur home made mothers recipe. I personally love my fried chicken with waffles so not having waffles on the menu with that awesome fried chicken is sad for me! The sides were ok. I ended up eating my chicken with the cinnamon rolls lol.

I love fried chicken… I love chicken fried steak. I had heard about Stroud’s from many locals as we are somewhat new transplants to the KC metro. I had 2 experiences with Stroud’s and the one positive thing I can say is the service is great. The food… well I’d rather goto Popeye’s or KFC and I hate KFC. Both times I ordered both chicken fried steak and fried chicken. Both weren’t seasoned at all… and the gravy… it’s a joke. Seriously was hoping to gain a new favorite chicken spot. No flavor, no flavor… no flavor.

Pretty average fried chicken… that’s about all. The food… I tried the fried chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes and my two sides. After much acclaim from my co-workers I was expecting a lot of the friend chicken. While it might be freshly fried, I don’t think there’s really any real seasoning or strong flavor to the chicken. The breading is fairly thin and moderate(maybe good for some folks), but that means you’re really just getting chicken plus a bit of fried skin. Still decent, but nothing amazing. The sides were all okay, nothing out of the ordinary or too impressive. The venue… definitely a Midwestern family restaurant. The service is extremely polite, prompt, and nice. There’s more than ample seating here. Overall… I don’t think it’s worth it, but for a quick fried chicken fix, maybe.

We were here for a family dinner on New Years Eve and our dinner was great. Our server was very nice and attentive. We were not rushed and took home a lot of leftovers.

Stroud of Overland Park. What a fantastic place. If you ever went to the original place on 87th and 71 Hwy KC Mo. Overland Park is as good if not better. I know the food is fantastic. I had the Liver and gizzards, my wife had the chicken fried steak. My sister had chicken fingers and the loaded baked potato. Along with the green beans, and dinner salad we all left very happy. I highly recommend all of the Stroud. They are just plane good people. If you get a chance and need to walk of some of your food check out the walls of autographs that are framed on the threw out the restaurant.

I was at Stroud’s last Saturday evening(10−3−15) for dinner with my family. We went in to relax and enjoy an evening together, so we were not in a rush. We ordered drinks and our server, Cat, was very nice in allowing us time to talk and peruse the menu before we ordered. However, we were upset to hear a man, obviously a manager, snap at her just a few feet from our table, wanting to know why an empty table wasn’t clean. We felt like he was more worried about an empty table than focusing on the fact that our server was taking care of us and her other tables that were in the process of eating. While the food and our server were great, the overall experience was uncomfortable for us. Maybe next time we’ll go to the other location.

I originally gave it 2 stars, but the memory of that über-dry fried chicken made the 2nd star evaporate. The server was good. This last star is her star. Clearly Stroud’s is a dusty mummy of its original self and making no effort to reclaim the quality that the Stroud’s name is supposed to connote. Dry chicken at a chicken joint – never tolerable. But if that’s not enough evidence, another diner with me ordered the pork chop. Yup. Beyond well done – meaning«dry.» Not okay, Stroud’s. Not okay. Bear in mind, I’m not talking about borderline – some dry, some okay – chicken. This was at best dry, and around the edges, downright tough. As in: suck-the-moisture-out-of-your-body –thru-your-tongue tough. It’s a wonder they don’t have a Red Cross choke-mobile standing by in the parking lot. They should. NOTE: this review pertains to the Overland Park location. I still have hope that the Stroud’s «Oak Ridge Manor» hasn’t lost the magic. NOTE: I would have made it a point to send the food back to the kitchen; with the hope that it’s capable of producing moist fried chicken. However at this occasion, I was a guest and didn’t want to embarrass my gracious host by complaining about the dinner he was buying for me.

Once a year, I made the trek up north to visit Stroud’s. I live way out south, so the distance kept me from eating at Stroud’s too often. Now, much to the consternation of my cardiologist and my BMI, there is a Stroud’s 10 minutes from my house. Ten short minutes. If you are looking for something fancy, this is not the place for you. Further, if you are looking for something inexpensive, there’s a KFC a block or so away. Keep driving. This is comfort food at its finest. There is nothing healthy about it. .. it simply tastes good. The menu isn’t very extensive, but what they do, they do pretty darn well. I can’t speak to anything but the chicken. Why anyone would go to Stroud’s and not eat chicken is beyond me. Try the chicken. You’ll like it. I am sure that the proximity of this new Stroud’s location will shorten my life. I will, however, die with a smile on my face.

Our waitress was friendly and did a good job. My only gripe would be to bribe the chicken. The meat itself is bland. And I think it’s overpriced. Other than those two issues, chicken coating is NOT greasy and Tastes great. Fabulous gravy and potatoes and amazing cinnamon rolls. I’m not a salad eater but adore the chicken noodle soup. Well done strouds!

We moved here from the Dallas/Fort Worth area where there’s a little fried chicken joint called Babe’s in several cities back home. I was excited to learn about Stroud’s and that it might be a lot like Babe’s and what we’re used to. Homestyle fried chicken, and homestyle sides and fixins’. Server was super sweet — let’s say that right off the bat. We first ordered the chicken strips. They were very light, very flavorful and piping hot. We had 3 dipping sauces and the gravy they offer. We had ranch, bbq sauce, and buffalo. The ranch and the gravy was our favorite. The bowl of gravy that came with our strips was a little different than the gravy that came with our main dish –which was strange to me. That’s when the yummy seemed to stop… We then received our chicken order which was 2 breasts and 2 wings. We also got the sides that come with it(mashed potatoes, green beans and gravy). Again, the gravy that came with the meal wasn’t as dark or seasoned as the gravy that came with the strips. The fried chicken was a let down. :-(I SO wanted to like this chicken! I really did. I read several other reviews that it wasn’t seasoned enough, and they were 100% correct. The potatoes also taste like they were instant. The only way I can point out how different it is to someone is if they tried Babe’s as well. That’s maybe impossible to most, but you will see the difference and know the difference. We got 2 cin rolls when we left. My 13 year old loved it. I thought it was just a giant bread roll that’s been dipped in butter, sugar and cinnamon. It was ok. Again, I really wanted to like this place so much. Just not enough seasoning in my chicken. It was very bland. I wish someone at Stroud’s would travel down and taste how the folks at Babe’s are cooking it. They also serve creamed corn with the green beans and potatoes — that would be a nice treat at Stroud’s as well. I don’t know if we’ll be back. But it was OK. Just OK.

Not sure why this place is so popular. Chicken was very bland and the gravy tasted like flour. Green beans tasted like the aluminum can they came out of. We got carry-out. I watched the lady at the register double check the order but didn’t do it myself. We paid for a salad and half order of gizzards we didn’t get. I’m sure they will refund when we call back. The place was packed and it seemed everyone else in our party liked it. I have no plans to return. If you like bland, tasteless food and gravy that tastes like flour then this is your place.

We dined here for Mother’s Day with a party of eight, and it was a pleasant but mixed experience. Our server was pleasant, but stretched too thin with too many tables and too little support. The food was inconsistent, with our initial batch of chicken stale, and about 40% short relative to our order. The rest of the chicken, brought to address our shortfall, was fresher, with some inner warmth still intact. Sides were decent, bland, lukewarm, and ordinary, and we needed to ask to get our canned-quality green beans. The cinnamon rolls were solid, about the best item served to us family style. The reswizzled Mimi’s space was sufficiently Strouds-like and finished nicely, and the live pianist playing mid-century music was a nice touch. All told, this is a tough place to recommend. It might be a nice reminder of the original Strouds, if you keep your expectations low.

This is not the Stroud’s we grew up on. Poor service, exorbitant prices, lack of character, and most importantly — UNSEASONEDFOOD. Everything from the fried chicken to the mashed potatoes to the gravy: there is absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Unilocalers who are giving this place good reviews have never had good fried chicken in their entire lives and it truly makes me wonder why they don’t just eat at McDonalds every day since apparently they are entirely without taste buds. And this hurts… because some of my fondest KC dining experiences were digging into some cottage fries at the old Troost location, listening to that old guy pound on the piano. The owners/operators of the new Strouds are much more interested on trading on that legacy to expand out(a new Strouds will be opening in Independence, MO) and make more money than actually serving good food and memories. They have tarnished the Strouds name; it is no longer a secret that their reputation is on the decline. Just look at Unilocal. So where do you go for home-style cooking and good fried chicken? Easy. No-brainer! Go to RC’s in Martin City. You’ll thank me later.

I heard Stroud’s is a must if you’re visiting Kansas City. I have to agree that this is a worthwhile stop. Claim to fame: pan fried chicken. Juicy, tender pieces of chicken with light, crispy skin, just like grandma would make. Notable runner-up: basket of fluffy cinnamon rolls that comes with every meal. These things must’ve been sprinkled with pixie dust! Definitely save room for a cinnamon roll or two. Ambiance: think indoor picnic in a giant log cabin. Bragging rights: James Beard Award for Excellence, Zagat Award for Best Restaurant. appearance on Travel Channel’s Man v. Food and No Reservations, and Food Network’s The Best Thing I Ever Ate. Value: two thumbs up. For less than $ 13/person(after tips and taxes), you can expect to waddle out of Stroud’s with a good amount of leftover side dishes. Service: friendly, helpful and attentive. Our water never sat empty.

It doesn’t get more American than Stroud’s — home of the famous pan-fried chicken. And just in time for Fourth of July, Stroud’s opened its third restaurant in Overland Park. The new location is in the former Mimi’s Café space(8301 W. 135th Street.). In addition to fried chicken, Stroud’s menu features classic American comfort foods like chicken fried steak, pork chops and cheeseburgers. My favorite dish is the famous Three-Piece Pan-Fried Chicken Dinner($ 15.50) with mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans and cinnamon rolls. The cinnamon rolls don’t look like much — but don’t underestimate them. Coated in crunchy layers of cinnamon and sugar and dripping with butter, these rolls are the sweetest ending to an All-American meal. A little history… Stroud’s has been a Kansas City staple for more than 80 years. Founders Guy and Helen Stroud originally served BBQ until World War II created a beef shortage and they altered the menu to include chicken. Helen’s pan-fried chicken became a hit and her same recipe is still used today.(Stroud’s is now owned by Mike Donegan.) The new Overland Park location joins two other restaurants in Oak Ridge and Fairway.
