Delicious! I had the filet that was perfect and my husband had the big ribeye that he said was a little overcooked to his liking. Other than that everything was very good.

Understand, I liked this place and this is a good restaurant, but in no way do they rate 4 ½ stars. The food is fine, certainly not fine dinning. They don’t seem to know how to serve a wedge salad, although the blue cheese dressing is delicious. Steaks are OK but I can get 2 grades better in Vegas for half the price. Maybe it’s the price that has the thorn in my claw. They are 20−30% too high for the experience.

Solid. Not blown away, but solid. Diners won’t be disappointed.

We shared a medium rare Kansas City strip and seared scallops with lobster risotto. The strip was one of the best tasting steaks I have ever had. It was perfectly cooked and had a great flavor… so yummy. The scallops were good as well; however, the risotto had a little too much butter. Great service. Nice atmosphere. Actually a 4.5 rating.

Great service, great atmosphere, great drinks. VERY disappointed in the Steak. Very fatty. Suggested it was and did not get much satisfaction around a fatty piece 0f meat. They said they would cook another, but I did not bother. Get it right the first time. You are expensive! Should not have to complain.

Great dinner at J Gilbert’s last night. My wife had the special; a swordfish filet in an orange ginger glaze with mashed potatoes and asparagus. It was absolutely fantastic. I had the filet and scallops. Scallops were some of the best I have ever tasted. Steak was average compared to the swordfish and scallops, but very good in its own right. Will definitely go again with friends and family.

J. Gilbert’s happens to be the place to take your 5 to 6 coworkers or clients out for a big awesome steak dinner. Or that’s what it appeared to me and my wife when we were seated in between two such parties for our first time eating dinner here. Did this really have an effect on our dining experience? Well not after a bottle of wine. Anyway, on to the food. Since this was a supposed to be a very nice couples meal together, we went with a prix fixe three course meal. First course, the delicious Maryland crab bisque, which is served with the crab placed in the middle of a bowl and the server pouring a little pitcher of bisque around it. Second course, my wife had the salmon served on a cedar plank and I had the 14 oz Duroc pork chop(ordered medium), both served with mashed potatoes and salty green beans. Let me say that the pork chop was the most thickest, juiciest, succulent one I have ever had and the wife’s salmon was very good too. Third course, we had the New York cheesecake and crème bruleé for dessert, which were both well done and not too heavy. Overall, this is one of the best meals I have ever had in the KC Metro and I didn’t even had the steak which they are famous for. I will just save that for next time or year, or whenever my wallet recovers from this meal.

It was date night and I wanted to get a steak. Being in Kansas City that should be an easy task. But most steak houses in town are expensive and don’t fit the traditional meat and potato meal I like sometimes. I decided to try J. Gilbert’s and it was decent. Part of the reason I gave it four stars was because it was expensive and I don’t want to feel ripped off. I’ll start with the steak which had a great woodfired flavor but had too much gristle. I’m not sure if that’s something they can pick out before they cook it so I don’t blame them. I make a mean mushroom Risotto and their Risotto and potatoes could’ve used more salt and overall flavor. The appetizer plate was probably my favorite part of the meal definitely unique flavors. Apple pie dessert was great with the gooseberries and the warm cold distinct difference. Great service and atmosphere. So, went 4 stars, more like 3.5.

This is one of the most difficult reviews for me because the food and service was pretty good. I went there last night with a friend and I had my stomach set on chicken. After our server explained the menu he described the Ribeye so well that I had to get it. My food looked wonderful when it came out. Everything had great flavor, however, my ribeye was FULL of fat. There is a distinct difference between marbling and fat. This thing was pure fat. I’d say at least 30−45% of my steak was fat around the edges. I was so disappointed because the flavor www amazing. The service was good but I had to ask for water twice which is not a huge deal for me, but some people might get irritated my that. I am going to return to try them again. I will say that I expected more from a place know for its steaks.

We did return this past Sunday for a late-evening dinner and we had a lovely experience. We chose J. Gilbert’s to celebrate our 10th Wedding Anniversary — what an excellent choice! First, we MUST send our«thanks» to our waiter, Marco… He was phenomenal. As a waiter, he is top-notch. He was prompt with visits to the table, timely with a bottle of wine, very well-versed in the menu, took great notes when taking our specific orders and special requests, made eye-contact, honored all the waiter-etiquette that once could ever hope for, never let drinks or glasses run dry, was perfectly attentive without being overbearing, the list continues. He made sure the entire experience was an 11+ on a scale of 1 – 10. Most excellent — thanks, Marco! At the conclusion of the meal, the manager /assistant manager(Adam, maybe?) did make it a point to stop-by and visit with our table. He was professional, courteous and accommodating. We did appreciate his«hello». The food was fantastic. I ordered the ½ chicken breast with a baked potato substituting the roasted potatoes with asparagus. Chicken was perfectly cooked, the baked potato was served warm and the asparagus was delightful. My spouse ordered the ribs which were out-of-this world! So pleased! Presentation was delightful! J. Gilbert’s is such an amazing staple of the KC Metro and a guaranteed«good experience» that we are happy to recommend. Kansas City lacks venues that afford such top-notch experiences, it seems to us that the few that remain must be protected.

Man Oh Man. This place is awesome. Be aware that this place is pricey, so if you’re on a tight budget, this may not be the place for you. But, it was worth every penny. I loved the décor — kind of dark, rustic, and if you’re going there on a date, you’ll be good to go. I wasn’t. I was with a co-worker. :) Even though, we thought it was a really cool place. Our server was awesome and guided us to some of her favorites. I had the porterhouse which was huge and larger than I could finish in a sitting, but cooked perfectly. The sides were amazing as well. I had thought I took a few pictures but can’t find them. Trust me, very impressive. Very elegant, very nice.

We love dining here. Especially for special occasions. Food is always good and great service. They offer a pre fixe menu with many options and a great assortment of other entrees. Steaks are always very tender and well prepared. Love the wide assortment of side dishes. We’ve never been, but they have a large, beautiful bar area. Sometimes they have live music. We need to try it sometime.

Typically I’d give a chain restaurant less than 5 stars but I really loved every part of the meal I had at J Gilbert’s. Was it expensive? Yes, but was it worth it? Definitely. I had a combo with a filet mignon, scallops, risotto, and mashed potatoes. It was fantastic. To make it an even better experience the atmosphere was warm, there was some quiet live music, and the bread and butter was wonderful. If you are looking for an intimate steakhouse in overland park look no further.

My in-laws chose J. Gilbert’s for our family Christmas dinner on 20 December. Total, we were a party of six children(2, 6, 8, 11, 14, 15) and seven adults(age: none of your business) and were seated in a small room. My father-in-law had already ordered two bottles of a delicious malbec for the table(I didn’t catch the name, as they had serving towels wrapped around them), but it was wonderful. Along with the complimentary bread(a little hard for my liking) and butter, there were a couple orders each of the Maytag potato chips(which I’m sure the older kids each ate their weight in) and the fried calamari. As my part of the family had eaten a big lunch and I wanted to savor every part of my meal(I’m one of those people who studies menus in advance), I left the appetisers to the others and nibbled on the bread. I was a little concerned that there wasn’t a kids’ menu listed online, but it turns out they do have one, which my son(6), nephews(2 and 11) and younger niece(8) ordered from. Three ordered steak and my son ordered chicken. My younger nephew is allergic to nightshades, but pronounced his Brussels sprouts«delicious» and offered to share. My older niece(14) and my stepson(15) both ordered six ounce filets with mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Adult entrees included the ahi tuna and various steaks. My husband ordered a swordfish special and I tasted it. I’m not a major lover of fish and had never tried swordfish, but it was amazing and I would consider ordering it, myself, if it was offered and if my steak hadn’t been so perfect. I ordered the four ounce filet combination with Georges Bank sea scallops, grilled asparagus, and creamed corn. I also asked for a side of their steak sauce, but ended up not needing it. The steak(medium rare) was cooked to perfection and the sides were perfect. I covet scallops and, unfortunately, didn’t finish mine; they were overcooked and had no sear. Another stand out: my brother-in-law ordered the crab bisque and the table-side presentation was beautiful. He was sitting next to me and I wanted to distract him and steal his soup. Pros: — The service was wonderful, attentive but not overbearing. — My steak was so delicious, I actually didn’t want to force myself to finish the last two bites and had them boxed to go. I almost never take food home. — The beer and cocktail menus are pasted on really cool glass bottles. Cons: — My creamed corn and my brother-in-law’s baked potato were put on the wrong plates. Luckily, they were easy to transfer. — My aforementioned scallops. — I literally received four stalks of asparagus. While I wasn’t paying(many thanks to my wonderful father-in-law), I feel the price is a bit inflated. I definitely want to return to J. Gilbert’s in the future and will recommend them to anyone, but they’re a bit out of our way, even for a date night in Kansas City,

Was looking for best steakhouses in KC for a business dinner and I saw that this place was consistently ranked 1. Made reservations for a table for 6 and we were given a good one. The ambiance of the place was so cozy and it was dimly lit in an elegant way. There was an actual fireplace where wood was actually burning, I loved that. Our server, didn’t get her name unfortunately, was so knowledgable and engaging and quick. She asked if some of us were first timers and explained their specialties for both steak and seafood. So we gave in to a bountiful seafood platter with the freshest oysters, crab, prawns, and lobster with different sauces served alongside. Someone ordered the bleu cheese chips too and it was a hit, though I personally am not into potatoes. It is Restaurant Week so they had a specific menu for it for $ 33 each which came with either soup or salad, main, and dessert. I got the Crab Bisque(divine!), medium rare Kansas City Strip Steak(additional charge of $ 10 and worth it!) and a slice of chocolate cake for dessert(heavenly!). I normally am always on a diet and into calorie counting but this dinner, except for the steak, I was able to finish it all! It was worth the money and sooo worth the calories! This place is worth the splurge! Do it!

We love J Gilbert’s! If you are looking for a great steak in Kansas City, look no further. The food at J Gilbert’s is consistently outstanding no matter what you order. I’ve had both steak and seafood here and my entrees are always perfectly cooked and seasoned. The wine and liquor selection here is fantastic as well. They carry a local Pinot Noir called Barrel Burner that I highly recommend. I’m not normally a red wine drinker, but I like this one so much I choose it over white wine on any menu I see it on. The service here is top notch as well. Wait staff is friendly and knowledgeable without being intrusive. Truly a wonderful experience from start to finish each and every time!

This is the steakhouse I have been looking for since I landed in KC! Had a cowboy ribeye here that was outstanding. It was cooked exactly how I asked and was so so tasty. I also recommend the lobster mac n cheese(which can be hit or miss but I think this one is good). J Gilberts also has a great happy hour with $ 3 lobster claws and other tasty bites for a reasonable price. Also, their baked bread is incredible. Warm, crusty sourdough with two different flavors of butter. Don’t forget to check in on Unilocal for a free Maytag blue cheese chips!

Made a reservation online almost 2 hours before my 8:15 reservation. Got here and they can’t find my reservation in their system. So we were seated at a tiny 2 person table, because that’s all they had available. By tiny I mean tiny! The restaurant was quite loud for an upscale place. We will not be returning. Bad experience plus bad hostess equals never returning. I’d much rather spend my $ 120+ someplace else. The hostess was quite snotty and so were the other 2 girls chatting behind the check in area. My bread was hard(harder than it should have been). It took 10 minutes to get a wine menu and then another 30 minutes to get the actual bottle of wine. Should we have left and gone someplace else? Yes. However it was a date night without kids and already late. My tortilla soup would have been phenomenal however, it was cold and had tomatoes after I specifically inquired to make sure they weren’t on/in the soup. My husband ordered a steak and it was overcooked. How can you be a steak place and not know how to cook a steak?

I had never been to J. Gilbert’s, so when we decided to try the private dining for a 12-person family celebration, I was not sure what to expect. The cozy private room, the personalized price fixe menus, the attentive service, and amazing food blew me away – everything about the experience was great. The food was top notch – we went with the mid-tier fixed price. It involves a choice of 2 salads and a soup for starter; steak, chicken, salmon, or pasta for entrée; and crème brûlée, killer chocolate cake, or berries and cream for dessert. We were a little disappointed to hear that they were out of the 10oz sirloin, BUT wait… they were replacing it with an 8oz filet(at no extra charge). I got the crab soup(velvety, a little sweet, so good), the stead with potato and asparagus, and the chocolate cake. It was all served with little loaves of the house-made sourdough and smokey butter. Best steak I have had in a very long time – very highly flavored with the wood smoke and so tender. The private dining room was nice and perfectly sized for our group of 12. Our waitress was amazing, keeping us all filled on drinks and even personalizing the to go boxes for the group. Best part… our party was at 1pm on Sunday(they usually do not even open until 4pm) – that is how much they are willing to work with your group. Next group dinner… I know where I am going.
