Just got back from breakfast at Sara Jay’s. Food was very good, served quickly and good classic Southern cooking. I had asked for a biscuit but got toast; that’s the only problem. But the food was fine, and the tough reviews I see elsewhere certainly don’t represent the typical meal here. I’ve eaten here before and always been happy with the food.

Food is Southern style, country cooking. Average diner taste at best, and the service is terrible. My husband and I have been twice for Sunday breakfast, and both times we felt like we were ordering at the«breakfast Nazi.» She had no patience for us and was more interested in her favorite customers instead of us. When a mistake was made on their part, she didn’t bother to apologize or offer any other word of condolence.

Nasty tasteless food. Got fried fish and inside the rock hard crusty«shell» was pure mush, nothing resembling anything close to fish. My two veggies perked up with a ton of salt. Yuck!!!

I had heard rave reviews from my co-workers about this place. I thought I couldn’t go wrong with a restaurant like this, but I was oh so wrong! My husband and I both ordered the lunch special, hamburger steak(w/gravy & onions) and two sides. He chose squash and onion rings, and I chose mashed potatoes with gravy and onion rings. We also both opted for a slice of barbecue bread instead of cornbread. I could see through the window to the kitchen as the girl pulled a pre-cooked patty out of a bin, plopped in on the plate before ladling a bit of gravy over it and scooping a spoonful of slimy onions out of a bin. We seated ourselves while we waited on the rest of our food to be plated. I say«plated» specifically, because before our bottoms hit the sit, our plates were out, which mean NOTHING was cooked to order. Our hamburger patties were not even warm. They were beyond dry and cold. Absolutely disgusting! The onions and gravy were not warm, either. My potatoes were served in a ball form with a plop of the same cold gravy on top. My buttered bread was soggy and COLD! My onion rings were soggy, greasy and overly salty. My husband said the same about his plate, but at least his squash was warm. The only thing enjoyable on our table was the sweet tea. I really went into this place wanting to like it, but it felt like a run-down retirement home with a cafeteria in back for people with little to no taste-buds left. To add insult to injury, our total was around $ 18.00 for our lunch. If you are looking for a meat and veggie style restaurant, go to Veggies to Go! I mean, even the Piggly Wiggly deli has better things to offer!

Classic southern breakfast place and also your«meat and three» for lunch. Basically order at the window, get your food on plastic plates and you get a copious portion of food. Prices are decent(3.80 to 5.80 for breakfast plates– eggs, meat, grits, and biscuit or toast). Coffee is 1.50. Lunch is about 8.50 with rotating meats and veggies.

Went here for lunch, disappointed. Ordered their lunch special. Fried chicken = good enough, fries = under cooked, green beans = no taste, corn bread = dry. Simply wasn’t worth the price. Decent enough, but not the special spot previous reviews made it out to be.

Good down home Southern country cooking. We had catfish with 2 veggies and corn bread. This was a busy place and a little hard to find but worth it.

Sarajay’s is a musty, Southern little restaurant that you would find off the highway in the lone countryside but somehow, it ended up in Opelika. You would think no one has ever heard of this place but most of the customers are families. The ladies working here remind you of your cranky grandmother who pretended she wasn’t happy to see you but was always more than helpful to help you pick what to eat. They have specials every day of the week while holding true to simple menu options with quality intact. I ordered the fried chicken with squash and New’s potatoes, which are diced-up red potatoes. The New’s potatoes were disappointing since it didn’t have the flavor I was expecting. However, the squash was the best warm, sloshy squash I’ve had in a very long time. It had the texture of runny, buttery, mashed potatoes. The fried chicken is always good. They give you only one piece but it’s as big as your head. You wonder if birds actually come in that size.
