Something has to be pretty bad for me to write a bad review. But this was not good. While the sandwich was fine, it was off-putting to be watching the two staff behind the counter moving slowly, not acknowledging customers and complaining about customers in the meantime. When I ordered, I clearly said pastrami on rye with just mayo. I then glanced up to see the counter guy melting cheese on the meat. I once again asked for pastrami on rye with just mayo. Looking angry, he pushed the meat aside and heated more meat. When he took the meat from the microwave, he asked me if I wanted mustard or mayo with it. For the third time, I said pastrami on rye with just mayo. You may think he was busy with several orders. No, mine was the only one he was working on. Then I went to pay, standing there for 5 minutes waiting. When someone finally came, she asked me cash or credit. I said cash and she left. The next thing I know, she is behind the counter making someone else’s sandwich. It was probably the most disinterested, poor service I have ever received.

Airport food is usually unremarkable. My sandwich at Max’s was remarkable. Corned beef and pastrami combo. Great fresh rye bread, generous warm portions of meat, and mustard. Asked for a bit of coleslaw inside sandwich, no problem. Meat was flavorful and bottom line I was surprised at overall quality. I’d rate almost as high as same order from Jerrys Famous Deli or Yorkshire Grill in Los Angeles. I chowed down, wiped up my mess and thought for the same price as others mentioned this is a great airport value. I’m ordering the same next time in OAK!

Really terrible, reheated tasteless breakfast for $ 15 with crappy attitude to boot. The breakfast they were serving across the way at Andale looked way better. Wish I’d looked around more first.

Max’s is known for matzo ball soup. It’s featured on this menu too. But they never have it here. In fact, they are nearly always out of soup. If you want soup, you’ll have better luck at Andale across the way. The bread for the sandwiches doesn’t taste fresh. The vegetables have seen better days, although none of it has actually gone bad. Overall, these sandwiches are lackluster and only better than what you get in the to go fridges because you can customize them. Service is slow, but the workers are at least polite. The restaurant cleanliness had looked iffy on a couple occasions that I’ve stopped by(only to find they had no soup). But the food is so lackluster, I just can’t recommend the place. I haven’t been here for breakfast though. Maybe that’s what keeps this place in business.

Boo Max’s! Who turns off breakfast right at 11 while people are in line waiting for breakfast at 11:01? Why?

Max’s has several Bay Area locations of varying quality. The Max’s at the Oakland Airport«merits» the lowest rating possible. One morning about 10am, I ordered a chicken salad sandwich to go. The bread was very stale and the chicken«salad» tasted like chicken jerky swimming in mayonnaise. It was disgusting, and a waste of $ 10.00. I am surprised that they are still in business or that the health department hasn’t gotten after them.

Was on the OAK-CMH non-stop. That’s four hours. Needed a proper lunch before boarding. Choosing a place«close to your gate» is bad decision making. It’s after 11AM and I had to wait over 10 minutes for grilled chicken? Seems like that would be a common order. The worst part though is the amount of mustard on the sandwich. It was slathered on both pieces of bread, and came oozing through. And we’re not talking fancy mustard… just ordinary yellow mustard. Essentially, I had a mustard sandwich for lunch. That’s all I could taste.

The worst employee attitudes I have ever come across. First off they only serve 1 person at a time. Took me 15 minutes to get scrambled eggs in a line of 5 people. The employees just mope around and could give a sh*t less. I know this isn’t an upscale place like McDonald’s but come on. Finally after getting said food which to be honest wasn’t too bad I watched the lady at the counter turn people away because they said they were on break. Really? 7am monday morning rush and everyone is on break. Anyway unless you have plenty of time to kill I suggest across the way at Peets. I personally don’t know how good their food is but that seems to be where all the people are eating.

I just over payed for garbage. Burnt hash browns, dry biscuits, and flavorless scrambled egg and meats. They try to make up quality with quantity, and it simply does not work. I can’t even finish it cause it is so dry… $ 11.99, pfff

Would have loved to have one of those Rubens on the signs everywhere. They were out those, and out of philly cheese steaks, out of hot dogs and chicken breast. It’s 11am and there’s barely anyone in the terminal.

The food is very basic at Max’s Eatz, but they give you plenty of it. And since I was expecting only peanuts for the rest of the day, it was nice to get a meal before boarding. I can’t imagine anyone eating there if they weren’t already stuck within the security area of the terminal.

The food is good and you get plenty of it. However the workers attitudes need to adjusted. No smiles, no thank you and always speaking in Spanish. Just like any other business, the customer is the life giving blood… So treat us like we matter.

Just had the best sandwich at an airport ever! Staff was friendly as well. I just recommended this place to the person sitting next to me as devoured my BLT before I boarded my flight.

This place is the epitome of «name your» airport dining experience. It could be good, tasty, unique, memorable but it is none of these things. Oakland Airport use to be one of my airports when I use to commute by air in 2007, and I use it 5+ times a year ever since and the food here at Max’s has not improved. The breakfast sandwich was underwhelming, bland, I bet if I took a bagel and a slice of cheese and ran it through the x-ray machine at security it would taste the same as one from here. Last time I flew out around lunch I had ordered a Classic Ruben, and right in front of me they grab the cold sliced meat in front of me and threw it in the microwave. I swear I got better pastrami from the same type of packs from the precooked packs from Costco. And to add the negativity to my experience, there were 3 people working there and only one had access to the register and she was busy helping the customer behind me. Skip this place, just do. Places like this just won’t go out of business because Oakland is a commuter airport and they got the right business model to keep the business going for a long time.

All the negative stuff about the service is true. Counter people are mostly surly, certainly slow, and somehow shocked that I don’t already know their arcane rules and serving schedules. BUT, if you’re taking a five hour flight you should know better than to count on the airline keeping your blood sugar up. Somewhere over Kansas – after you’ve finished watching the Star Trek movie you downloaded or simply cannot read another business report – , you will be delighted, and maybe a little comforted, to pull out a pastrami on rye with a side of potato salad(even if you did ask for cole slaw). Are the prices a bit steep? Yes. But you just paid the airline $ 50 to play Russian Roulette with your suitcase, so why start complaining about costs now.

I tried to get food here just after 5AM, which was the time all the other food joints open in the OAK terminal. I walked up and asked to order and the lady said«we won’t be open for a long time», I asked if there was a normal opening time and she said it was«not for a long time». She was so rude Therefore I will not try to eat here ever again. It’s just apparent that she was late to work and struggling to try and open on time, and was very grumpy. Too bad because the pastries looked good.

The food is overpriced, and the service is poor. The portion sizes are decent, but they need more vegetarian options. Also, they need to make it clearer when you can order what. Overall, the menu is too complicated.

I like Max’s. Usually. In theory. This one? No Effin way. Why? Lazy, rude, completely disinterested employees. Sure, it’s 5:30pm on Veterans Day, airport is a little slow. But why should I, a customer, have to wait five minutes before anyone even appeared? And then, to have some fat blob saunter their way FROMTHECALIFORNIAPIZZAKITCHEN next door, only to completely take her time to walk behind the counter and take at least three minutes to put on gloves and then say«what u want?» What I want you ain’t selling, that is, your pink slip you useless carbon based life form. At least now I know where the people who lost their jobs to the Fastrak machines now work. YA feel me?

Great food. Service was great too. Prices high of course. … I had a big turkey sandwich that I almost didn’t finish, it was a lot of food(Maybe that big oatmeal cookie that I bought with the sandwich and ate first was a factor) I will be back.

Ordered a Pastrami and Corned Beef sandwich. The person making the sandwiches kept yelling do you want cheese. I said no and he yelled again. He was rude to the lady in front of me too. After he was done making the sandwich I asked for potato salad as the side. He said it was in the would be in the box. So when I was paying I checked the box. No potato salad. The lady in front of me was complaining about something too. I liked Max’s for the food years back but the company management is now really bad. I don’t know the official association with Max’s in San Ramon but read the reviews. If you are upsetting a large number people and they feel compelled to write about it, there is a problem. It just so happens Max’s is the only sandwich place in the Southwest Airline terminal and there is nothing to eat on the plane. So, they can be rude and serve expensive crappy food.
