This is by far my favorite hardware store in the Bay Area. Staff is always helpful without being intrusive, and the esoteric selection is wonderful. Hopefully the march towards uniformity will not effect Markus as it has so many other hardware stores.

This is literally the dopest hardware store I’ve been in since I moved to the bay. Listen, everyone who works here is super chill, extremely friendly and down to earth and will help you find what you need. I can’t recommend this hardware store enough. I discovered this store while walking to my storage unit and I stopped in to buy a cheap lock instead of dropping $ 20 on a fancy lock that I didn’t need. I’m glad stores like this are still around to offer a different type of service compared to the big box hardware stores. I have so many memories of running after a Home Depot employee trying to get help. Not here, no one will run from you! Yes!

Solid service, knowledgable staff. I have been left waiting once or twice, but it’s a small price to pay for a genuinely helpful experience. Beats Home Depot any day!

Stopped in for first time today. I’m impressed with their mechanic’s tool selection. For anything beyond the basics I usually have to go to McMaster-Carr and wait a couple of days. Today I needed a 7 mm hex driver, an uncommon size that’s not part of typical socket or allen key sets. This place had it in a Craftsman set, as a single socket, and as an allen key. I bought the socket(Ace branded chrome-vanadium, not horrible) and key for $ 7 and now I can finish my brake job this weekend. I picked up some of the nice quality black nitrile gloves while I was here, they can be hard to find too. I’ll definitely be back!

This is a great store with helpful staff. The managers are great and so is Mahiri. Mahiri was kind enough to carry my large items to the car. I would recommend this store!

This place is the best! It looks small from the outside, but they have never been without what I needed. The staff are always helpful and friendly. I can’t walk two steps in the store without being greeted and assisted. I am so glad they are in my neighborhood. I have bought light bulbs, furniture stain, wax, stainless steel cleaner, canning jars, paint supplies, you name it… they’ve got it! This will be my go-to place for just about everything!

As a former employee, I seriously took for granted the lock expertise at Markus Supply. It really is impossible to get the knowledge, skill, custom work, and product variety at a hardware store like this. The quality of a locksmith shop without the high price. Wish I still lived close enough to walk in to the store, but thankfully they will ship!

Synopsis: The employees make this place awesome. Dets.: I’ve come here twice, and both times been checked out by a very enthusiastic, bespectacled cashier. The fellow who made my keys was as enthusiastic as he was efficient; he made sure I left with a smile on my face and a new set of keys. I’ll continue coming to this store, and I’m happy it exists. It makes me even happier to learn that it’s family-owned and operated! Way to rock it.

Awesome. Went to Home Depot twice to get some keys copied — both times they got it wrong, and their associate was incredibly rude. Went here after that ordeal, was approached by a helpful guy who copied my keys while I browsed. About ten cents more per key than Home Depot, but worth it cause they got it right the first time.

EVERYONE that works at this store is incredible. It’s rare to see people go out of their way to help you out. I always check this store before going anywhere else. Thanks to the staff!

This is my go-to hardware store, an excellent neighborhood institution. It looks small from the outside, but it’s jam-packed with all of your home needs. There are members of the staff who have been there for longer than I’ve lived in the neighborhood, and even when the store is rearranged, they know exactly where everything is! I really like that they have all of their CFL and LED light bulbs out on a lit stand for you to look at before you buy, and the people who check you out are friendly and fast!

I love this place. It’s like going to an old-fashioned hardware store where they actually care about you/your project. We’ve saved a lot of $ as a result, because we’ve been able to fix things. Mario is so clever, knowledgeable and creative. On our last visit he really went out of his way to make sure we were getting the right parts to the pump we were trying to repair. Everyone there is very nice, and they always have everything we need. I have an Ace closer to my house, but I prefer this one because the service is stellar.

I walked in looking to get some keys made, and unsure of where to go since it wa my first visit. I was immediately greeted and led to the key area. Where i received stellar customer service. Everyone was friendly and very helpful.

This review is long overdue. I started shopping here again when I moved to the area in 2010. I used to work near here in the mid 70’s, and we would come here to get supplies. I was very happy to find that it still exists as a family-owned business(relocated from across the street). Here you will find happy, friendly, knowledgeable employees that enthusiastically want to assist you, and a remarkably vast array of supplies, well organized into a relatively small space. You might pay a bit more than you would at Home Depot, but the time savings, lack of frustration, competent advice and cheerful employees make it well worth it to me. It’s actually fun to shop here! Now, if only Flints on San Pablo Ave. was still open…

The friendly vibe here was so contagious that I walked around the store a little longer and found that they have everything needed to maintain your home and car(much more for home though). Customer service is A++++++++++! Parking right out front too!

This hardware store looks small from the outside(compared to Home Depot), but don’t let that deceive you. It has just about everything you could need for home improvement and repairs. I live in Jack London Square, and can’t count the number of times I’ve gone last minute to this store for something urgent. Their service is extremely helpful and friendly. Very personable help. Reasonable prices. I continue to come back because they’ve got everything I need. I’ll come here over Home Depot any day. One time I needed a screw, but they didn’t have the right size. So one of the senior store workers cut one to size for me. While he was doing it, I saw that he was coaching a more junior store worker how it’s done. I value their work ethic and how they genuinely care about people.

An oasis of happiness. Out in West Oakland there aren’t many landmarks other than moving trains, fences, and warehouses. One of the warehouses, however, contains a hardware store that is a pleasure to visit. A colleague and I were talking about our shopping lists, and we decided to drop in on our way to lunch and take a look. The clerks there made eye contact, and when I told them what I was interested in, immediately pointed me in the right direction. This is the kind of service I’ve learned to enjoy at Ace. OK, so you wouldn’t think it meant much when I told them I was looking for a KEYRING, but yes, they made sure I found their collection in the key department. Well, it turned out there was an assortment of key rings, key chains and key wires, ranging from $ 2 to $ 5 depending on whether I wanted a Cal logo or a big hanger for my belt. Eventually I found the perfect item hidden in little drawers next to the display — a 1-inch ring, with nothing hanging on it. The cashier didn’t bat an eye when I placed it on the counter, she just asked if there were anything else I wanted today. Then she rang up the $ 0.43 with all the courtesy as if I were buying a riding lawn mower or a barbecue. The store is just a block from our West Oakland work site, and you can bet we’ll be back for various, more professional, items in the future.

I come here for parts. Happy 4th everybody! I’d go on about how fabulous it would be to re-imagine the sentiment of the Founders in a 21st century kind of way, how we collectively have the tools and the opportunity to make this fine country an even more amazing place … But I won’t. You know all this already. And it’s a beautiful day. So relax in the shade, think happy thoughts. I’ll go fetch us a couple more cold ones …
