*** IFYOUARETHINKINGABOUTHIRINGTHISMANTOFIXANYTHINGINYOURHOME, PLEASEREADTHISSOYOUKNOWWHATYOUAREGETTINGYOURSELFINTO *** I was needing someone to install a timer panel that controls my outside lighting, as well as trouble shooting a couple of non-functioning outlet. I was referred to Hugh by a neighbor so I started corresponding with him asking him if he was a skilled electrician. Hugh assured me that he was and that he has wired a whole house in the past and that he can troubleshoot electrical problems. Based on that, I was sold. His rates are $ 85 per hour with a minimum of 2 hour service call charge. I was fine with it as long as he can fix the problem. On the day of my scheduled appointment, Hugh spent a good 3.5 hours here«fixing» my outlets and my timer panel. By the time he left –my foyer light, light above my fireplace and my outside light all didn’t work. To top it off, the non-functioning outlet he came here to troubleshoot STILL didn’t work. And on top of all these issues, my outlets in my entire living room didn’t work either. Shortly after Hugh left, I contacted him to let him know of these issues and asked if he was able to come by after his next gig to fix this. He said he couldn’t and that he would be here tomorrow around noon to take a look. Noon rolled around the next day, and I haven’t heard from him so I texted him to find out when he would be here. He said around 3:30. So he finally showed up. Spent another couple of hours here and he still wasn’t able to figure out the problem. He left here with nothing fixed. Everything was broken and he ended up pulling the timer panel out due to all of these issues that wasn’t there before I hired him. My husband spoke to Hugh to let him know how dissatisfied we were with the outcome and that we shouldn’t be paying for a bad job. A few days later, I received an invoice for $ 423.10 from him. Most electricians I have contacted will not charge for a bad job. I was surprised I received an invoice for the full blown amount. I’m not even sure what I’m paying for. Even retail stores will refund you fully if you bought something defective. After series of emails to Hugh, we were able to compromise on an amount paid to him and that is his minimum 2 hours service call x $ 85 per hour + parts, which is about half of what he invoiced. But seriously, why am I paying $ 221 for a bad job?! I shouldn’t have to pay for anything! Be aware, this guy is unethical and will invoice you his hours spent in your home«fixing» things, even if he doesn’t fix anything. And if he broke more than he fixed, he will still bill you for his time. Do you really want to waste your hard earned money and your valuable time? I later found out through the Department of Consumer Affairs Contractors State License Board website that Hugh isn’t even licensed. My mistake for not doing further research on him. Bottom line, this guy shouldn’t be in the fixin’ trade. Don’t bother using him to fix anything in your home, because he can’t. Plus, he will charge you for something he didn’t fix. You’ve been warned.
