I love folicles!!!

I’m really surprised to see the mediocre ratings for Follicles. I’ve been getting my hair done by Devon for years and have always been very happy with his work. My hair is healthy and looks great. I have found some stylist have trouble working with the texture of my hair (a combination of wavy and curly, that holds water but not a curl) but Devon does not. Another great thing is that I don’t sit in the chair for hours and hours as I have with some stylist as Devon seems to manage his time very well.
The new location is very nice and comfortable, giving this place a much more upscale feel than you’d find at many other salons targeting black hair.

This place has put the u in unprofessional obviously after getting to much attention and a plug from a national magazine they think they are more than they really are. I was interested because their in my area an I need a good quallity stylist/​hair cutter. I called made my appointment the owner who seemed polite set me up with Trenay which was a waste of my time. I showed up on time and the place was difficult to locate because their located above other stores with no outside street sign directing you to that fact, once I located the stair well that actually had a little bland sign directing you upstairs it seemed as if I was going to someones apartment and the door to the business made me skeptical because I didn’t knnow if it belonged to follicles or not, they really need to define their establishment from the outside so you know where your going for sure.
And back to the stylist Trenay lack of customer service and courtesy don’t waste your time unless your looking for ghetto gossiping and to be ignored. I was quoted $ 85 dollars for a style wash, condition and cut. I showed up on time for my appointment she left me waiting why she ran to the beauty supply, I wasn’t directed where I could wait and was left waiting for at least 30 mins. The owner or the stylist never asked was I ok or told me what was going on with her, I over heard them talking and said she went to the beauty supply on that note I got up and left and went to a more respectable place on lakeshore called Center Stage more mature and respectable behaved stylist give them a try I got a great hair cut and style from a stylist named James and he gave me a first time customer disount and plust I tipped him and it was less than the $ 85 total, his 30 years experience really paid off with my hair. The people over at follicles can really learn something from James and Center Stage.
P. S. I’m not sure why they have good reviews because no one in the whole establishment bothered to speak, even though I did being in business myself I’m always courteous to customers. Their the ones who bring you business and keep you in busineess, lose them then what do you have?

i just so happen to walk in and ask Devon if he could do my hair, and I have been going to him ever since. For those of you who would appreciate a nice, pleasant, humors, and a family oriented atmosphere Follicles is the place to be. I would only speak for Devon, the owner, as he is the only one who does my hair and the only one whom I trust with chemicals… but he has multiple other hairstylists within his salon but I highly doubt they are as good as he is. This review is specific to Mai /​Maisha — Through a very lemmony snicket adventure, I ended up scheduling my bridal consultation with her and thank God I did so 3 months before the wedding. She didn’t want to do the hair trial, telling me that, «I know how to do hair,» as though all hair is the same. And it took an act of congress to get her to agree to the trial appointment (for which I was willing to pay her). Then the very unprofessional woman didn’t show up. At all. Nothing. nada. I waited $ 30 minutes, and spent my time googling other salons. On my way home, I called another salon and was seen the next day. All of her colleagues in the shop were kind, very apologetic and would have helped me, had their chairs not been full. The shop itself was very clean, well appointed and in a good location, with decent parking. I should have made my appointment with another stylist in the shop. Live and learn.

This review is regarding Trenaye’s work. All I have to say is, sistah is an artist with a pair of scissors in her hand. I wear my hair short and she hooked me up with the best haircut & styling I’ve had since moving to the Bay area nearly 3 years ago. The salon’s prices are up there (I’m originally from the midwest, so I suppose it’s all relative). But I suppose you get what you pay for – or so I’ve been learning, at least.
As a note, I’ve seen her do both long and short hair. I can only speak for short hair since that’s all I know, but every short style I’ve seen her do has been fabulous!

Devon, AKA Mr. Follicles himself, did a wonderful job on my hair. Very gentle touch, did exactly what I asked (didn’t cut too much or too little), and is a wonderful conversationalist. A delightful hair experience. Ladies, you will not be disappointed. Promise.

I used to go to Devon. He talks entirely too much during his service. He doesn’t really even do anything except cut and flat iron your hair. He often has his assistant shampoo, color and relax your hair… while he has personal conversations or errands.
He TOTALLY DOUBLE BOOKS sometimes TRIPLE BOOKS YOU and it is one of those salons where you’re waiting… waiting to the point you’re nearly going insane. The shop is dirty, dark and disorganized. Suggestion — HAVE A CLEAN UP DAY!
With that said, Devon is REALLY good at hair… but it’s not worth all the other drama associated with going to the shop. You’re often listening to very personal information/​conversation being tossed back and forth… it’s just not professional. Devon, if you managed your time better and respected your client’s time as they respect yours… your rating would skyrocket to 5… your skill alone doesn’t make it for me right now…

As a newcomer to the Bay Area, I have been on a serious hunt to find a really good hair stylist. Unfortunately, good and reliable stylist are very hard to find (see my other reviews). This profession seems to have an abundance of «flaky» folks (i.e. unprofessional & might not show up for an appointment). I went to Devon at Follicles and I must admit that I thought he did a great job and I will definitely return.
Pros:
+Started on time and did not overbook appointments
+Very professional and courteous
+Nice hair cut: Layers were simple and easy to maintain
+Hair was bouncy and shiny, no hard curls or sprays
Cons:
–Parking is really difficult in this area
–Pricing is a bit high ($ 75 shampoo/​style)
–Cash only no credit cards
Minus one star because at these prices, they should really accept debit/​credit cards. Chuck up the visa/​mc fees to the cost of doing business and get the cc machine :-)
