I noticed most of the reviews revolve around dinning in, but what I do not see mentioned in reviews is the butcher. This is my go-to place to buy the best quality local pasture raised meats. That’s not to say that sandwiches in house aren’t delicious, but it is the butcher counter that sets this place a part for me. Whole Foods does not even carry meat this good but the prices are on par. For anyone that likes to make extravagant meals at home, there are all kinds of stocks, sausages, animal fats, and pates that are guaranteed to please your guests. The only downside I have found is that they often sell out of things(that’s just what happens when you buy fresh and local) so it is best to not have you heart set on a certain cut of meat, you just have to get what’s there. If you don’t know how to cook it, the butcher will be happy to give you guidance.

I love hamburgers, truly I do. I love the skinny ones at Smokehouse, the fast ones at In-N-Out, and the double-digit fancy fat ones that have been doing battle all over town these past couple of years. The thing about those half-pound burgers though is that they throw me into a food coma, so I have to plan accordingly. No movie after a big burger, no late-night research on whatever-it-is-I’m-obsessing-about-at-the-moment. If I’m smart I eat half, and take the rest to go. So I fully intended to eat half of that C&H Burger the other night. I’ve been under the weather and didn’t think I could do 8 oz of juicy beef plus all that goodness piled on top. Neither did I think I’d eat more than a couple of those beef tallow fries. I got them for my daughter. To go with her salad. But the fries got me on the way home… I had one. Then another. I was chain eating french fries all the way home. Crispy outside, soft/fluffy inside. Pristine, without ketchup. Each one was better than the one before it. My daughter was lucky there were any left at all. Then the burger. The first couple of bites were pretty good, a little awkward because it is a big damn burger. I paced myself. Then I got past the outer edge, to where all the *stuff* was happening: the pimento cheese was tangy, the onion jam was exactly sweet enough, the pickle mayo was creamy and bright. Then there were the two patties: juicy, perfectly cooked, fatty but no too fatty. I wanted to stop eating it, but I couldn’t. I got up twice to wash my face because I was making such a ridiculous mess of myself. Each time, I swore I would save the rest for later… but…just one more bite… suddenly there was a tiny piece left about the size of a hard-boiled egg. I saved it for a midnight snack because I didn’t want that burger to end. PS: They also make delicious beef bone broth. Cures what ails you.

5 star is my vote for this meatshop/butcher place! I love to shop my protein from a specialized shop where I can ask them for a specific cut and can chat and exchange recipes with the guy behind the counter. We got a 2 inch thick high quality porterhouse steak which is a ticker version of T-bone steak and it was absolutely delightful. We put it on the grill the same day– no marination just regular rub, very light and tender meat. Simple recipes are a great testimonials to the quality of ingredients. I am not much of red meat fan but when I crave it I try not to comprise the qualify. Try it for yourself.

Now, when one receives an email from the owner inquiring if this Texas native has come in to sample the best of the west to a girl from the south, it’s an invite I dare not pass. Speaking of pass: pass the plate, pass the wine, and pass the beef. All I can say is: God bless the oxen and the ass. This food is reminiscent of home-made nostalgia with an artisan modern day loveliness. Desirous of the chick sandwich(which I saw on «Diners & Dives») but I can’t call myself a Texas purveyor of all things cow unless I try their sirloin samich. Elsie has gone to pasture and has been usurped by Elgin the angus. The sirloin is so hot and so tender that I was reminded of a former lover; well-rounded, well kept, well-fed and well-documented! Easy parking behind the spot. On the corner of 40th/Broadway. Go early(before 1130) for a prized window seat. If not, don’t fret, this food tastes good at any table, theirs or yours. Thanks Ana, your moos shall be heard around and throughout the bay forever today and henceforth. Thank you for your craft and for sharing it with us foodies. i

Disappointing and ridiculously over priced for what you get. A plain burger and small side of bland asparagus was $ 25. No thank you. You can get fantastic quality and tasty meat down the street(a few feet away) at Hog’s Apothecary.

For me 4 stars means it’s good but not super memorable that I MUST come back. Did not leave wondering when is the next time I’ll be back. But don’t get me wrong their fried chicken sandwich and Cuban was pretty good! The only thumbs down is the side of asparagus… four little strands for $ 7 is a bit much!

Had the Charcuterie and Rib Eye steak. That meal was nothing short of legendary. Wife had the cheesesteak sandwich; I took a bite and it was the best one I ever had. I can close my eyes and still picture that meal. The only flaw is the dining room is a bit small. I ordered some ground beef, to go. It was $ 10 a pound, but it grilled up beautifully. So… totally…worth it.

Dined here a couple nights ago on a whim. My friend and I really wanted a burger. I’ve randomly tried going here before but my timing was always off and it was closed. We were pleasantly surprised and it was definitely good enough to probably come back again in the future. I can’t say we were blown away by the burger but we were certainly not disappointed. The beef was cooked perfectly and the pimento cheese was really delicious. I loved the double patty as it made for pretty decent eating. I had bacon on mine but it didn’t really make or break the burger. We both really enjoyed the bun. I’m always a fan when the bun doesn’t take away from the burger experience. As far as the other things, we got a charcuterie board of 3 items. It was good not great. Definitely not the reason to come here. Service was friendly but a little spotty at times as far as their timing at our table. It was just a bit off in our opinion. The room is really nicely laid out and I love the butcher shop which I definitely plan to try one night. Very few good butcher shops in the bay so it’s nice to find another one in the mix. Especially one that from the customer point of view looks like they mean serious business. Another trip or two and a shot at the butcher shop could easily make this a 4 in my book.

One of the only places in the bay area that I’ve found selling black pudding style blood sausage! Great meats and lovely staff here — and a phenomenal burger. I live nearby and like to stop by to get their bone broth whenever I can too!

The service is a little frosty, but the flavors are above average. For a smaller joint you’d think it’d be easier to have more attention to stuff like drinks and how it’s going. We got the 6 item charcuterie board — really delicious and interesting pickles, and mustard. My favorite was the duck. I ordered the chicken and waffles and to be fair read fish sauce but didn’t quite understand what that translated to on the plate. It’s very unique! But if you like it – the chicken was cooked so well! The asparagus soup had amazing flavor, as did the philly cheese steak sandwich– if you like philly cheese steaks JUSTORDERIT — it’s next level stuff in there. Also the rib eye was just delicious. Some of the most tender and well-prepared rib eye I’ve had. Treat yourself!

Fish sauce is my JAM! Being half Vietnamese, I’m used to having fish sauce in everything(soups, stir-fry’s, you name it). So when I saw that Clove and Hoof had Fried Chicken and Waffles with a FISHSAUCECARAMEL I knew I had to try it. Me: Let’s go to Clove and Hoof Him: Do we dress up? Me: Nah, it’s a butcher shop Him: You know they have meat there right? Like lots of meat? Me: Yes… I know –___– Since I don’t eat pork or red meat, BF was surprised about my choice for dinner. We came on a Saturday night and were quickly seated. I ordered the fried chicken and waffles and he ordered the cheesesteak. I loved the fried chicken and waffles! You could definitely taste the fish sauce, which I enjoyed, but I could see how it would be unusual for people who arne’t familiar with the flavor. The lemon poppy waffle was a nice contrast with the chicken. The«thai herb salad» was just jalapeño, cilantro and bean sprouts and pickled pineapple. It felt more like garnish than a salad that went with it. Bf thought the meat of cheesesteak was on the salty side and the bread was a bit too hard, but overall he enjoyed it. For dessert we ordered the butterscotch pudding. MUSTGET! I’m not even that crazy about butterscotch but this was AMAZING. A great end to the meal. Prices are on the higher end, but the quality is good and portions are HUGE so you won’t leave hungry. Service was very attentive!

Kicking myself for not trying Clove & Hoof sooner! I’ve been eyeing the place on Unilocal for awhile, and my parents recently mentioned it when they passed by on their way to the sushi restaurant next door. My dad was super curious about the place, so we stopped by for dinner on Monday. If you’re dining in for dinner, it’s table service, so grab a seat and a server will come over. Our server was the absolute sweetest, and on top of her shit(she also looked like she was the only server on the floor that night?). C&H has a pretty sweet beer selection, and my parents raved about their Linden Street black lager, and I had the Berryessa whippersnapper. Started off with the charcuterie board and shared the smoked pork chop, fried chicken and waffles, and grilled ribeye. Was it entirely too much food for three people? Yes. Was it delicious? Absolutely. The charcuterie board came with housemade pickled veggies, housemade pâté, and other meats I don’t know how to pronounce. Housemade is the running theme here, and everything is made with love. Since the place doubles as a butcher shop, all of the meat was high quality and cooked perfectly. While the place might be a little pricey, the dinner entrees are HUGE, so you’re definitely getting your money’s worth. We’re huge fans and we’ll definitely be back!

I recently came here with some friends for Oakland restaurant week and was blown away by the deliciousness and quality of the food! Almost everything was so amazing that I was already planning my return here while eating my dinner. We decided we would all do the pre fixe menu for $ 30 a person and share everything. Each person got to pick one appetizer, one salad, and one entrée. The appetizer was either a charcuterie item of your choice or pork rinds with tomato nduja spread, the salad was either panzanella or a chicories and quinoa salad, and the entrée options were either fried chicken with a pollen fennel waffle and fish sauce caramel syrup or a Clove & Hoof burger. Since there were three of us, we chose two charcuteries(salami and terrine) and one plate of pork rinds. The terrine and salami were absolutely amazing! I had never had terrine before, but my friend said it would be good and I always trust her when it comes to our food. The pork rinds were among some of the best I ever had. They almost tasted like they were sugar dusted, for the perfect mix of sweet and savory. The nduja spread the pork rinds were served with was so delicious that we couldn’t decide if we should eat it with the pork rinds, the bread slices, or by itself. Next for the salads — the chicories and quinoa salad was pretty good. It was sweet, citrusy, and the quinoa was evenly spread throughout the salad which made for an even amount of quinoa in every bite. The panzanella was absolutely my favorite salad i’ve ever had! It’s basically a salad with fried pieces of bread and butternut squash pieces mixed in with some greens and onions. The fried bread pieces were so delicious it was like eating an Indian fried donut with my salad. I never thought I would find a salad in this world that I actually could crave like that! Thankfully my other friends were nice enough to let me eat the majority of the panzanella while they ate the majority of the quinoa salads. Lastly, the entrees! — By this time we were so incredibly full that we couldn’t even finish them. We ate what we knew wouldn’t keep well(the chicken and waffles) and saved the burger for later. The chicken and waffles were pretty good, but also a little weird. The waffles had a hint of black licorice flavor which made me not like the waffles at all. The fried chicken was perfect and delicious, but with the fish sauce caramel syrup it was a little too much. I would say that the fish sauce caramel syrup was good, but it was also a little weird. Just seems like there might be a few too many flavors going on in that syrup. We took the burger home and ate it later, and even cold, we were incredibly impressed by how the burger tasted. It was perfectly cooked with the perfect amount of toppings and sauce, with the cheese melted inbetween the two burger patties. One of the best burgers i’ve ever had my entire life! Even though there were some items which I didn’t find an absolute hit, the items that I did like made up for everything! They also took quite some time between each course before we got the next one, but with the quality of food they are serving, the wait is definitely justified! Five stars for sure!

After an early morning of hiking in the redwoods, the boy and I wound up at Clove and Hoof, starving for a hearty late lunch. Clove and Hoof is a fantastic part-butchery part-restaurant, with some impressive looking cuts of meat resting casually in the front display case. We opted to order our own sandwiches and share, in order to optimize our menu-trying abilities! THEHIGHLIGHTS. + One of the BEST fried chicken sandwiches that I’ve had the pleasure of eating(a little heavy on the bread/breading, but the meat itself is fantastic) + BEEFTALLOWFRIES. Ohmehgee the most perfect, fatty, golden fries I’ve had the guilty pleasure of devouring + Awesome selection of drinks(both alcoholic and non) + A very relaxed, trendy vibe to the place overall I’ll happily come back after another hike — the food may not be light, but it’s impressively good.

Thank you Unilocal from salvation from starvation. Was to meet my Howard Hughes like brother at Trader Vics when I get the text he wasn’t coming in. I shoulda seen this. None the less I fired up the trusty Unilocal app and looked for a nice place, that was relatively nearby. Ta Da… Clove and Hoof. It was a good recommendation. Clove and Hoof is either a restaurant inside a butcher shop or a Butcher shop inside a restaurant… I think the later. Wonderful ambiance inside. Warm inviting help. Order at the counter and prepare to grub. I ordered the pulled pork and a side of Beef tallow fries… both were excellent. The pork was succulent and full of flavor… the mustard base sauce was very tasty, the artisanal bun framed the sandwich wonderfully. Accompanying salad was basic but good. As others have mentioned… the Beef tallow fries are good but I cant really tell the difference between other fry methods… they were still really good. Crunchy, light, and served with a great Aioli. Prices are not cheap: Sandwich was 13 and the fries 5… but the quality of meat is excellent. No antibiotics, humanely raised, etc If I was in the neighborhood I would definitely come back

Was delicious. But somehow underwhelming. I think I got my expectations up a little too high. Oof. Tragedy. So I stopped by here today and decided to spend 20 bucks on a cheesesteak and fries. Despite being way overpriced, it was a decisively delicious and extremely filling meal. I barely even touched the fries bc it was so much food(also, they really just weren’t that great). The cheesesteak is piled high with different kind of mushrooms, onions, and cheese. I’m not sure what kind of cheese it was – something like the liquidy American cheese they use on most cheesesteaks – but I didn’t really like it. Everything else, flavor wise, was absolutely noms. I only wish that they had given me more onions! Stop by here for lunch or dinner but definitely skip the fries– they’re an extra $ 5 for run of the mill standard fries! Next time I’ll try to burger!

I’m giving this place 3.5 stars Came here for lunch with two of my friends. 2 chicken sandwiches, the Cuban sandwich, 2 orders of the beef tallow fries and 3 beers… $ 68+(not including tip) later, we sit down and wait for our food. Love how it’s a butcher shop but doesn’t smell like one. Wait wasn’t too bad, but there were a lot of people here for lunch. Fried chicken sandwich… Nice golden brown color and cooked perfectly, but here’s why I wasn’t a fan. The bread that it was on was dry, a little hard and it was plain. No spread, butter, sauce, etc… Comparable to the bread you get with a bahn mi sandwich. The fish sauce that its caramelized in is an interesting flavor, not good nor bad. I think it lacked seasoning and the fried chicken was better if you ate it alone without the bread. The small side salad is about 4 bites, but appreciated. The beef tallow fries — had higher expectations. I saw a tip on here saying it was too salty, but our order of fries had no salt at all and didn’t knock my socks off. Didn’t have that special beef fat flavor I thought it would have. Good fries but nothing special about them. They did come with a small thing of white sauce that’s comparable to a light tarter sauce. Cuban sandwich — my friend ate half of it, and dissected the other half. He said his bread was also dry with just a smidget of Dijon mustard. The ham and bologne looking meat was good, but the sweet pickles was a hit or miss depending on your taste. I should’ve went with my instincts and ordered the burger instead but the cashier said she liked the chicken sandwich over the burger, so I went with her recommendations. I’m willing to give this place another try when I’m ready to have an expensive lunch again.
