Such a cool little space! A great venue to meet ‘up & coming’ artists, see some amazing work, find inspiration, shop, and mingle with interesting people. One of my fav’s was: Tonya Solley Thornton’s ‘Twilight in the Valley’.

Right after I visited the Compound Gallery I visited Blankspace for the Plaid Friday sale. This gallery feels like it has more individual gift items while the Compound has more home furnishing type of gifts. Merchandise includes: recycled bags, recycled wallets, ceramics, jewelry, stationary, house plants, wall art, clothing, books, etc. Prices range from $ 1 – 200. The same quality and eclectic style continues from Compound to Blankspace. There’s even a statue of Babe the Blue Ox along with Paul Bunyan axes. You can take a picture with it but it’ll cost you $ 5. A nice riff on the Santa photos but much cheaper.

I went here for the very first time last night and was so happy to discover such a neat little gallery in my neighborhood. The artist on display had painted recreations of portraits done of all 44 presidents. Very cool. The space was nice. It didn’t have that snooty air that galleries can have. I really enjoyed my visit and look forward to future events. Check out Compound Gallery next door, too! It’s neat they’re side by side!

Really top notch art work. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show here that I didn’t like. Not to mention their lovely gallery shop. A great place for present purchasing.

This is an awesome space with lots of fund stuff going on all the time. In addition to amazing artwork by emerging artists, they host cool events like Rock n Roll Bingo, Christmas Craft Fairs and Clothing Swaps. Don’t forget to check out their rad little store in the front, featuring cute artist-made gifts and artwork. Get on their email list so you’ll get the inside scoop on their next thing.

I attended Rock and Roll Bingo at blankspace tonight.(Go back and read that again, I promise I don’t make this shit up, I’m not nearly creative enough) In an ingenious attempt to capture the audience from the monthly Oakland Art Murmur, the gallery brought in three bands that would play between rounds of bingo, accompanied by a dj using his laptop. Prizes ranged from«Paint By Monster» to an embroidered unicorn piece. While I give them a hell of a lot of credit for trying something creative, I was less impressed by the art itself-a single mural by Michael Hall seemingly inspired by a Gap ad.(Please visit and verify the authenticity of this claim) In the words of my friend, «Where’s the Art?» The magority of it was found in the little store located in the front of the gallery, which I’m likely to visit again for cute tees and canvas bags. I’ll give it another go and come back during the next Murmur.
